robmay··on "I'm Embarrassed on Behalf of the Tech Industry"
I agree. The tech industry prides itself on "easy UX" but in reality they make it easy to do the actions they want you as the user to do, not the actions you really want to do. They optimize for revenue, not for user happiness.
robmay··on Show HN: Taskrouter – One API Learning to Choose Models per AI Task
We've been building SLMs for enterprise customers for over a year, and in almost every case it's pretty easy to beat a frontier model on price and performance, so we decided to put our tech behind a broader router. Plug it in, we start with a frontier model but then constantly test on other inference configurations and start routing certain workloads to those. You can see on the "Task Explorer" page a few hundred comparisons of various models on common enterprise workloads.

It's new so, we need people to test it out and tell us what doesn't work. Appreciate any feedback you can send.

robmay··on Tokenminning: Because Tokenmaxxing Is a Bad Idea
Definitely - when you consider how varied inference workloads will be, and the different ways to minimize costs - better prompting, SLMs, different chips, batching, etc, there will be tons of opportunity

robmay··on Uber Torches 2026 AI Budget on Claude Code in Four Months
Most people don't have the team and time to do heavy token efficiency engineering. But that's all we do. marketplace.neurometric.ai has a bunch of task specific small models, and we charge flat monthly fees. We bear the token risk.

robmay··on How elites could shape mass preferences as AI reduces persuasion costs
Don't you think Elon Musk and his influence on Twitter counts as an elite? I'd argue the elites are the most followed people on social
robmay··on What I Learned Reading Abstracts of 200 Test Time Compute Research Papers
TL;DR - There is no one size fits all, It's a massively underexplored space, and it may end up being more important than the training side of AI.

robmay··on The Small Website Discoverability Crisis (2021)
I agree, it was my favorite site on the web before it was acquired.
robmay··on Almost all searches on my independent search engine are now from SEO spam bots
While I'm generally a blockchain skeptic, this is actually a good use for a blockchain - to "register" bots so they have an id, and an owner, and you can measure their behavior. There are going to be more bots interacting with more sites, so, this could work.
robmay··on A call to minimize distraction and respect users’ attention (2013)
I'm a VC who wrote a post about a similar thesis, and I'd love to chat with anyone working on solutions. https://medium.com/inside-pjc/the-pjc-notification-thesis-we...
robmay··on Ask HN: Favorite Blogs by Individuals?
Not sure if you mean "individuals" compared to companies or organizations, or actually just solo bloggers, so I'll include a few that have more than one individual author but are "personal".

https://marginalrevolution.com/ - on economics but so much else

https://avc.com/ - Fred has some of the best startup insights

https://abovethecrowd.com/ - Gurley doesn't blog much but when he does it's great

robmay··on Show HN: I made an alternative platform for professional profiles
Any thoughts about making this an open platform where people own their own data but apps are built on top of it? And users can design their own UIs too? I'd be an early paying customer of that API.

robmay··on Lessons Learned from 2 Years Marketing AI Bots
We must have had very different experiences. Our customers who use the product as it was designed, rather than like a saas product, see great results and rave about the AI success.
robmay··on Lessons Learned from 2 Years Marketing AI Bots
My last company was a Saas company, and buyers wanted to discuss maintenance contracts like they would for packaged software. They dont matter for Saas. Buyers disnt always understand that and it took time to change their buying habits. It was goid in those days to challenge customers on that.
robmay··on The ICO paradox and how to fix it
In parallel though, many entrepreneurs are staying on the sidelines because of fear of the regulatory bodies. I think the SEC should adopt something the like the proposed Arizona crypto laws.

Is there a use here for blockchains? Could you link block to block with a CA function or would that be weaker than the current approach that bitcoin uses?
robmay··on Options vs. Cash
Isn't it amazing that every day, Apple offers new options, diluting everyone else who owns stock? Crazy anyone would work there, or want any Apple stock given that fact.
robmay··on Ask HN: Ex-Founder. Should I take lowball buyout offer?
Most companies have a Right of First Refusal (ROFR) doc as part of the financing. If you can find someone in the secondary market to buy your shares, the company, if they want them, has to buy them at that price. Finding such a buyer is difficult but still possible. If it's a hot company, a lot of private wealth management groups are looking to package up stocks like this to their clients.
robmay··on Ask HN: What manual processes would you automate in your company?
We do this at Talla. A lot of our companies use us to onboard new employees in Slack, or MS Teams.
robmay··on Show HN: Technically Sentient – A Business Focused A.I. Newsletter
I run an AI company, and have a dozen or so AI angel investments, so I have a really interesting perspective on what is happening in the field. This newsletter is focused on AI and robotics from a perspective that is more lightweight tech, and more business focused. I focus on legal issues, strategy, business models, etc. Some of the newsletter commentary gets blogged at www.technicallysentient.com/blog if you want to check out some samples.
robmay··on Steve Jobs, a Genius at Pushing Boundaries
Makes you wonder if all that praise for design is really why Apple was successful, or if it was more because he pushed the limits of the law and was successful the way the old robber barons were, like a Rockefeller or Carnegie.
robmay··on Today is World Backup Day
Backupify didn't take the post down for legal reasons. We took it down because I talked to the founder of World Backup Day and he explained it was all a misunderstanding.

As a tech company CEO who has to deal a lot with lawyers, I'm not surprised this happened. Most of us in tech view lawyers as a necessary evil to be used sparingly. Lawyers often view themselves as protectors of original ideas. They often don't understand the social structure in which most techies operate.

So, I'm sure as a 20 something college student who hasn't experienced this yet, you lean on authority. If you have a bad experience with the first World Backup Day and someone tells you lawyers can prevent that, then you go and find a lawyer. The right thing to do would have been to use the community to police it and point out the scammers, but it's hard to understand the dynamics of these interactions until you have been through them.

Let me just say that Backupify supports World Backup Day, and intends to be a sponsor sometime in the future. We are on good terms with the founder, and I think his attorney was just a bit overzealous with enforcement.

My expectation and understanding of the future is that World Backup Day will belong to the community, and anyone will be able to discuss it, but to be a formal sponsor and be listed on the WBD site will be a paid option. I think that sounds fine.

robmay··on Why do business analysts and PMs get higher salaries than programmers?
There is a great book called "Management by Baseball." The author of the book points out that baseball managers are typically former players, and they usually believe that the most important position on the team is whatever position they used to play. I doubt PMs regularly make more than engineers across all levels at all companies, but in general the outcry you are seeing about this isn't limited to engineers. In my experience, almost everybody at almost every company thinks the thing that they do is the most important.

I can tell you that I have worked in 4 major roles: - engineer - sales engineer - business development - CEO

In my experience, the pay is directly tied to the need of the position to manage uncertainty and ambiguity, and evaluate difficult risk/reward tradeoffs. As you move up the hierarchy, you do more of this.

robmay··on Don't Read Tech Blogs: 10 Pieces of Startup Advice from Backupify's Rob May
Just to clarify the "don't read blogs" comment... what I meant was that tech blogs are disproportionately written by engineers. You don't see, for instance, many middle managers at Apple or Amazon blogging about their work. So if that's all you read, you have this skewed view of how a company should work based on what a bunch of young, small startup engineers tell you.

There is a disconnect between how the world works and how you think it works if you spend too much time reading these blogs, and that disconnect hurts you more than it helps you.
