roboman··on A decentralized peer-to-peer messaging application that operates over Bluetooth
Please site the relevant sections of this supposed law you claim exists.
roboman··on Hold on there: WPA3 connections fail after 11 hours
Do you measure WiFi 7 for packet loss? UniFi might be better but I stand by my advice and still suggest 802.11AC or AX for consumer grade router.
roboman··on Hold on there: WPA3 connections fail after 11 hours
I've worked as an engineer in the Wi-Fi industry. Here's my advice: stay at least one or, even better, two generations behind the current Wi-Fi standards.

Vendors care about only two things: (1) Cost (2) the Gbps they can print on the box.

So today that means 802.11ac and WPA2, unfortunately.

Stability of the software is not a consideration.

roboman··on Apple Watch Series 9 and Ultra 2 can't be sold in the USA
Apple can be a very insular; just license the technology!
roboman··on Ask HN: Is anyone else bearish on OpenAI?
"(I personally don't mind coding boilerplate stuff, especially since I can learn how the framework works that way)"

^ Isn't that what folks used to say about programming in assembler? How much time do I want to spend learning frameworks (beyond what I already know) vs. how productive do I want to be?

roboman··on Apple to Address iPhone 15 Overheating Issues in iOS 17 Software Update
The article has this: "Charging your phone with a higher wattage USB-C charger, those above 20 watts, may also make the devices toasty. " Total BS. The wattage of the charger is not causing this issue. Even a 300 Watt PD 3.0 USB-C charger still delivers up to 21 Volts at whatever current the phones charger decides it needs. The phone dictates how much power is consumed. The charger wattage is simply the maximum specified output power.
roboman··on The Comedy of Errors That Let China-Backed Hackers Steal Microsoft’s Signing Key
The article quotes Jake Williams as a former NSA hacker. He seems pretty flippant that this occured and how good Microsoft did. Is he impressed with Microsft's key rotation policy? The key was stolen years ago and was just recently used. Had it been rotated this would not have occured.
roboman··on Results of technical investigations for Storm-0558 key acquisition
^ agree! What an easy mitigation this would have been.
roboman··on Ford Plans to Lay Off at Least 1k Contract, Salaried Workers
yeah, I heard that electric and modern vehicles don't need software or good engineers anymore.... Ford is going old school.
roboman··on Closing in on the “perfect code” (2004)
I worked on forward error correcting codes for a variety of systems.

A few big issues with Turbo codes: 1. Decoder complexity - often 4x or more the complexity of simpler codes.

2. Encoder delay- you need to have a really long interleaver at the transmitter to get the big dB of improvements.

3. These work best an pure additive white gaussian noise channels - most channels suffer from multipath, fading and other disturbances.

So while they are good far satellite broadcast system they don't always work as well in other applications.

roboman··on At Apple, Rare Dissent over a New Product: Interactive Goggles
All the money and talent devoted to these AR glasses should be spent on a Siri 2.0 project using the latest large language models like GPT-4.

Apple put neural network processors on its phone for a few years now but I don't see them taking advantage of it.

Siri feels absolutely brain dead compared to other speech recognition and GPT systems. It should be an absolute embarrassment for Tim Cook and all Apple employees.

roboman··on Almost 40% of U.S. Consumers Trust Online Reviews Less Than They Did 5 Years Ago
I use the FakeSpot extension for the Brave browser. Works with any Chrome based browser.

Uses AI to analyze reviews as well as the reviewers other reviews. Then it gives a letter grade from A to F that rates the trustworthiness of the reviews.

Maybe not perfect but very cool!

roboman··on Total Cookie Protection
Does anyone know of a good comparison between FF and Brave regarding both security and privacy?
roboman··on FreeBSD is an amazing operating system
I think OpenBSD is still more secure than FreeBSD

Do yourself a favor: head to a newsstand or Starbucks and buy a copy of today’s WSJ. This special insert on the Apollo mission is well worth it.
