rohitb91··on How Inuit Parents Teach Kids To Control Their Anger (2019)
There’s things that are left out that are important

Many indigenous wanted their kids to go to these schools

There was abuse in the school system everywhere and it seems like catholic schooling has been sexually abusive everywhere

Rural canada was extremely poor

Viruses like influenza ravaged everyone

The media reporting on the matter makes it seem like everything bad of the past was exclusively done to indigenous when it was a combination of life sucking for everyone and then it being a bit worse to the indigenous on top of that. But painting it as this extreme injustice to indigenous is misleading IMO. To say nothing of the extreme grifting and people looking for payouts from the government that only make the lives of the indigenous worse.

rohitb91··on New study suggests people with dark personalities weaponize victimhood (2021)
Prizes and rewards are given out for being the biggest victim, so it's natural that people want to out-victim one another for additional resources. Anytime there's resources at stake, people will do what they can to gain them. In Canada it's so perverse that it seems like everyday someone is outed, after gaining a prestigious position, for not having any indigenous heritage at all. But, they used that status to rapidly gain resources over competitors.

rohitb91··on The Endless Doomscroller
Negative. The plexiglass increases your odds of getting covid because people have to yell more often, releasing more droplets.
rohitb91··on The Endless Doomscroller
Absolutely true. Even if you shut off all doomscrolling, block twitter, don't use facebook, don't read the news, you'll still interact with people in real life who are spending their time looking at doom narratives or have some sort of propaganda being pushed to them. It is nigh impossible to fight it off.
rohitb91··on The anatomy of an ML-powered stock picking engine
Definitely possible doing so many things. Following trend and just being in DXY or short SPY. It's a super short time-frame. Anything can happen. Trust test is 10 year + horizons.

Does anyone else notice that the days have been getting shorter lately? Could a fascist nation be manipulating the time so that we're more tired?

I'm 100% sure that happens for the majority of large subs. Along with paid astroturfing on political subreddits.

Wow

Will there be riots over the mismanagement of the wealth of millions of people? How much have these incompetent managers destroyed? Esg is a cancer to society.

rohitb91··on How This Ends
Russia invades ukraine, world becomes hysterical, mass sanctions, everyone stands with ukraine

America invades a country that has nothing to do with 9/11 and kills 500k+ (realistically 1mm+) civilians, no one stands with Iraq, and if they do they're terrorist states.

You know you can't see propaganda when...

rohitb91··on Vitamin D and Depression (2020)
100% the same for me as well. When I sit in the sun I feel invigorated, I Feel a rush of pleasant feelings throughout my body.

I take vitamin D regularly, 4000iu+, and I don’t feel anything remarkable. With the sun it’s almost an instant jolt of joy.

rohitb91··on Ontario government staffer fired after $100 donation to Ottawa convoy
Exactly, I'm certain that many here cheer when there are protests that explicitly are about a government stepping down.

Think about the thousands and even millions that demanded Trump resign, that Obama resign, that Putin resign, that Modi resign, that Macron resign, and so on.

rohitb91··on Ontario government staffer fired after $100 donation to Ottawa convoy
It was also retroactively deemed unlawful.

It would be like donating to BLM and then the government using emergency measures to shut down the protests like freezing bank accounts of those involved and then you lose your jobs and your accounts are frozen by the government and anyone that doesn't help the government stop the protest can be prosecuted by the government as well.

A lady in Ottawa who owned an ice cream shop was harassed because the information was leaked but in her mind she was supporting truckers that were out in the freezing weather protesting instead of working and still needed food and shelter.

People donate to protests and causes on a whim that get popular on social media all the time. I imagine a lot of people were donating to support some of the most thanklessly hard-worked people in society, truckers, that worked throughout the pandemic bringing back goods for the lucky people that could stay at home. The backgrounds of some of the initial organizers (some who are legitimate white supremacists) was not known initially and I imagine the majority still don't know and are instead protesting what they see as unnecessary mandates for truckers to get vaccinated even though they drive their trucks alone, and there's no indication that truckers are the cause of the spread of COVID.

I'm having an extremely hard time imagining people being okay with this and if you just change the protest cause just a bit I think it helps make clear why this is so dangerous.

rohitb91··on The Kelly criterion: How to size bets (2019)
It is definitely one way to approach startup investment and why VC funds spread their bets out on so many startups. Almost all go to 0, some go 100x.

rohitb91··on It’s not still the early days of blockchain
I think it's easier if we think about it with concrete people. How exactly would someone like El Chapo be using bitcoin for laundering activities?

Furthermore, when people bring up the laundering and crime argument, I always point out that the us dollar is by far the medium of choice for laundering money, crime, ransom, extortion, drug payments, human trafficking payments, terror financing.

Accepted almost everywhere, virtually untraceable.

rohitb91··on How bad is my gas stove?
Wow that would be exceptionally expensive. In cold areas I've seen people with moderately sized homes have $1000 bills in the cold months in ontario.

I always see vented and even power vented in ontario.
rohitb91··on Low interest rates in advanced countries have pushed money into real estate
Houses go down in value, land goes up in value on average, partly due to scarcity. Best example is Manhattan. Additional land is non existent, and any existing land becomes more valuable as more people and businesses move there.

rohitb91··on World food prices hit 10-year peak – FAO
West has become hyper selfish and unaware of their shutdowns in spending and travelling and not redistributing vaccines vs vaccinating kids and getting third shots in. People scared to go out with 10 cases on per cent of the 100k while third world countries have essentially 0 vaccinated.
rohitb91··on Finland joins Sweden and Denmark in limiting Moderna Covid-19 vaccine
Or the odds of dying of covid for young people vs a car accident. car accidents are significantly more dangerous.

And before people bring up side effects or other long term damage, most people don’t die in car accidents and suffer from ptsd, whiplash, broken bones etc.

Yet bring this up and you’re automatically an anti Vaxxer.

People are absolutely terrible at evaluating personal risk.

One of my coworkers drove across Canada to visit home at one point instead of taking a flight because of covid.

Young people should be more concerned with staying away from opioids, social media, friends that are racing cars, and binge drinking at parties.

Yet, the media has 14 year olds terrified of covid.

Lunacy.

rohitb91··on Canada: Hundreds of unmarked graves found at residential school
Well said

But even the reparations argument in my opinion is ridiculous given how much is already given in tax and other social benefits and the gross mishandling over and over of funds by chiefs.

rohitb91··on Canada: Hundreds of unmarked graves found at residential school
It’s not taking it’s conquering. I don’t know why Canada and the US are shy about the label.
rohitb91··on Canada: Hundreds of unmarked graves found at residential school
Unfettered social media use.
rohitb91··on Canada: Hundreds of unmarked graves found at residential school
If 30 kids died per hundred and were buried over decades and then show up today where the death rate is negligible, it looks like a horror.

But if we look at the base rate of 30 percent, we notice it’s not out of context.

What a strange reaction.

rohitb91··on Canada: Hundreds of unmarked graves found at residential school
I was going to say...

Op has a Pocahontas imagination of what most indigenous are like.

Most are like everyone else and want to live life, party, hang out with friends. Reserves have kfc and grocery stores. Some hunt but if you’re a white guy in northern / rural Canada you probably hunt.

What a weird take. Always a laugh to hear what the city liberal thinks of the world. So out of touch and delusional, but so confident.

It’d be like saying African Americans want to hunt wild game.
