roosgit··on Ask HN: Why there are no Android mini phones?
If you want an iPhone mini sized Android phone, you'll probably have to make some serious trade-offs.

According to Wikipedia, the iPhone mini is 131.5 mm tall and 64.2 mm wide. Using the "Phone Finder" on GSMArena, the closest phone dimension-wise, released in 2021, is the Alcatel 1 (137.6 x 65.7). Of course, it runs Android 11 Go because it only has 1GB of RAM. There are also a couple of Samsungs (A01 and M01 Core) at 141.7 x 67.5, but they only go up to 2GB and run Android 10 Go.

So it doesn't look like there are any "premium" Android phones that are close in size to the iPhone mini. Which is a shame.

roosgit··on macOS Monterey
Yes, Adobe is bad.

The way I got around this problem was to:

1. Download a Windows 10 virtual machine. It's free.

2. Download Acrobat Pro 2020 Trial for Windows. It has a full installation kit.

3. Install the virtual machine. But don't give it an internet connection.

4. Copy the Acrobat kit to the virtual machine and install it.

5. Make a snapshot of the virtual machine. When the trial expires restore the virtual machine.

It will cost you 30GB of space and 1 hour or so, but Adobe will be contained at least.

roosgit··on Ask HN: How to build a good looking SaaS landing page?
If I would be designing a landing page for a product or a service I would start with https://land-book.com/.

The first thing I would do is look for a structure that would fit my subject. For example, what goes at the top? Quite a few websites choose a tagline or a small description(with a large font size) on the left, followed by a slightly longer description(with a smaller font size) and a visible action button. While on the right, there's usually an image of the product. Now, does this work in my case? If it doesn't, I look at other examples.

The next sections can be cherry picked. I might want to show the main or unique features, testimonials and other things I'd consider essential to tell the visitors.

Only after I'd be done with this part (could be called wireframing), I'd start choosing colors and fonts. My recommendation is that if you like a color combination used on a website, use it and stick to it. Don't replace one of the colors, stick to what is there. Just don't pick the colors from a competitor's website, that's poor form, in my opinion.

Typography is a little trickier. You have to play with sizes and combinations. And in a lot of cases, good fonts are not free. But there are also decent options available in Google Fonts. On this page you can find good free font pairs https://www.fontpair.co/all.

roosgit··on Ask HN: My friend made it big. How to handle?
It's important to understand what's troubling you the most. The money or the status/class?

If it's the money, 100 million is hard to make; you probably have to play with somebody else's money. But if it's the fact that he's a founder/employer/boss and doesn't have a job in the traditional sense, like you do, that's a difference easier to reduce.

You don't have to start a company, raise money, hire people just to become your own boss. Being a freelancer or contractor will change your relationship with the people who pay you. Your dependence on them will decrease and you will have to refer to them as your clients.

Even though your business will have different sizes, you and your friend will be both business owners. It's like if he would have a very expensive car and you would a cheap one(instead of taking the bus), you'd both probably complain about the traffic.

A bit of envy and competition is not bad, can be motivating. You just have to try to keep it reasonable, to not let it take over.

roosgit··on Ask HW: Simple code editor?
I think Sublime Text is pretty simple https://www.sublimetext.com/. I still use version 3 because it's enough for me. You don't have to install any packages, can hide the sidebar (I do); just have a simple window.

Regarding autocomplete, I made my own. You can add files which contain only the words/keywords you want.

roosgit··on Ask HN: Is domain squatting still profitable? Is there a solution?
Speaking of expired domains, in your case the domain might have not been valuable enough (not enough backlinks). But I recently saw two websites put up for sale, one was claimed to be making $4000/mo and the other $1000/mo. Both from Amazon affiliate links.

The weird thing is that neither website was in the same niche as to what it was "reviewing". For example, the resort website had a post about the "best tomato chopper". Some of the old content was kept though(taken from archive.org), probably to look more "legit" to Googlebot.

roosgit··on Ask HN: Anyone here built successful SaaS/startup just for money?
If good money and just not breaking the law are two requirements, then looking into certain niches might not be a bad idea.

Google calls these niches "sensitive" https://support.google.com/adsense/answer/3016445?hl=en.

Here's an example, an online poker statistics SaaS making $2.9M Gross/Yr https://feinternational.com/buy-a-website/50471-saas-recurri...

roosgit··on Ask HN: How to make computer elderly proof
More than a few years ago I set up an old PC as a Skype machine for my folks. At a certain hour, on Sunday they would press the power button and the PC would boot Linux Mint. Skype would run on startup together with TeamViewer. I would initiate a call and they would click(the hardest task for them) on the green button. At the end of the conversation all they had to do is press the power button again which was programmed to initiate a shutdown. Linux Mint never installed any updates without asking and you could disable even the asking part, which I did.

This smooth process lasted a few years until Skype stopped supporting 32-bit processors. After that, I would log in remotely with TeamViewer, start Firefox and would begin a Google Hangouts call. Being an old PC, this wasn't as a good experience as it was with Skype.

A year or so later I bought them an iPad and started using FaceTime. This worked fine until Apple changed something on their servers and call notifications stopped working. Then, six months later, Apple logged out my folks from their account. After a 15 minute phone call I managed to guide them to enter a username and password somewhere in Settings. A week later they were logged out again, but this time after entering the username and password their account was locked. Luckily, I also installed Skype on their iPad, so now we use Skype again.

My ideal solution would still be a PC/laptop with Linux on it, that has updates disabled and can be remotely controlled. Unfortunately, Skype with its forced update behavior is the problem. It can stop working at any point or introduce UI changes that are confusing.

roosgit··on Ask HN: How to monetize small side projects?
What I've seen some small websites do is practically sell / rent backlinks. I can imagine this having the downside of doing business with people on the internet, not getting paid.

A slightly more ethical / more profitable / safer option would be to make websites in related niches (tech reviews, for example) which are easier to monetize, and then link to those. The costs of running the free websites would be paid by the profitable website.

Apple does a somewhat similar thing. iOS and macOS are free, but they are covered by the cost of the device. Or an open source library (free) paid by a book (charging for the documentation).

roosgit··on Ask HN: Which Linux distro has the best UX these days?
Besides Elementary, I think Pop!_OS https://pop.system76.com/ looks presentable too, although I've never tried it.

I used to run Xfce on an older laptop a few years ago. One thing that made me feel more at home on Linux was changing the font to Lucida Grande (the default font in OS X for a long time).

roosgit··on Ask HN: How to handle co-workers having a higher salary
It's not the best situation. They don't say "Ignorance is bliss" for nothing.

If you don’t say anything to the person who can increase your compensation, you might start caring less about your work, which could be noticed. Worse, you might start having feelings of resentment towards the company, manager or even your colleagues, depending how much you like them.

If you ask for a raise without mentioning your colleagues, and don't get it, you won't be too happy knowing what you know. Or to be more specific, believing what you believe, that you deserve the same compensation as your co-workers.

If you ask for a raise, don’t get it and then bring up your co-workers, I assume this would prompt your manager to give you reasons why your situation is different. But it's possible you might think these reasons are BS.

These are, of course, hypothetical scenarios, but it's not bad to consider them.

roosgit··on Linux Command One-Liners
It could have at least a less prominent color. And it could be added with a `::before` pseudo-element so you can't select it (just for decoration). Might be also annoying for screen readers without `aria-hidden`.
roosgit··on Ask HN: Jack-of-all-trades of HN, how do you approach job search?
You could try working on an online business as an alternative. You already know how to make websites.

If you're better at programming than design, a SaaS might be an option. Otherwise, you could create content that could be monitized with affiliate commissions or ads.

Of course, an online business takes time, but it could be a valid strategy in the next 2-3 years to generate enough income to cover your expenses.

roosgit··on Tell HN: Never search for domains on Godaddy.com
I never experienced this, but I did wait too long to buy a domain. After I checked if the domain was available(it was), I started building the website. A month later the domain was bought by someone who eventually made the same thing I wanted to make.

My current process for checking if a domain is available is pretty basic. I first check it in the browser. If Firefox can't find it, then I use the `whois` command. If there is no match for "example.com" then I decide if I want to buy it, before starting to build anything. If I do decide to get it, I go to Hover.com do a final check and press "Add to cart".

These days, for me it's better to spend $15 on a domain that might not get used, than to regret not buying it.

roosgit··on Ask HN: I want to resign with nothing lined up
I quit my job about 6 years ago. I had savings to last me 2 years.

At first I thought I was going to do freelance work, but the longer I didn't start doing that the more I didn't want to do it. So after a year or so of playing with new tech and starting several personal projects which didn't turn into viable businesses, I began making some money with a website.

Because that profitable website and others I built afterwards weren't actually that profitable, 2 years after I quit, I had to do some freelance work to not run out of money. I had to do 3 years of small freelance gigs while growing an online business. So for me it was 5 years before I could pay myself without having to sell my services.

Not knowing from the beginning what I really wanted to do cost me 5 years of, let's say, austerity. Never really had any financial problems during this time, but I also wasn't comfortable applying for loan to buy a house.

I don't want to offer any advice, just share a personal story which might be relevant.

roosgit··on Ask HN: Excessive coding has left my right wrist and fingers twitching
I used to have wrist pain and elbow pain. Here's some of the things I did that worked for me:

1. I stopped using a laptop keyboard and switched to a regular one. I just put my Apple keyboard on top of the laptop keyboard. Worked fine. Although I might give the Microsoft Sculpt Ergonomic Keyboard a try in the future.

2. I also noticed that I pressed the keys too hard(sometimes the tips of my fingers would hurt), so I try to type more gently.

3. I switched from my Magic Mouse to a Microsoft Sculpt Ergonomic Mouse. For me taller/vertical mice are more comfortable to use.

4. I added a foam wrist rest pad in front of my keyboard. One of these http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51wmYdfwdpL.jpg. Have a look at what your wrist are leaning against when you type and you can decide if you might need this or not.

5. More breaks. There are Pomodoro apps and extensions that can take care of automating this. For example, 25 minutes work, 5 minutes break.

6. Type less. I've seen a large number of people on YouTube type every letter when they code. Snippets, auto-complete can save you a lot of typing. You should only type a variable name entirely only once. After that, auto-complete.

7. I left the most important part for the end. Start working out. I don't go to the gym, but I have a modular dumbbell at home which I use. Start small, with the basics. You really don't want to injure yourself.

roosgit··on Ask HN: What’s the most important modern simple invention?
Liquid paper.

Invented in 1956 by a typist, in her kitchen. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liquid_Paper

roosgit··on Ask HN: How to get PHP lamp or mamp on Ubuntu 19.10?
Try tasksel. It has a simple wizard-like setup. I used it to install Apache, PHP and MySQL on a server by following a video tutorial. You can preview the whole process in this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QxuAwCKIoKg.

Unfortunately, it doesn't also install phpMyAdmin like MAMP does. But from a quick search, it seems that phpMyAdmin can be installed by running a single command in terminal.

roosgit··on Show HN: One Page Calendar 2020
To me, this looks complicated as well. For a full year calendar I prefer a standard one https://calendaroptions.com/2020-calendar/. If you're into space, NASA has a pretty cool science calendar(PDF) https://eospso.nasa.gov/sites/default/files/publications/202...
roosgit··on Ask HN: How to Make $20K a Month
You could buy an existing business https://feinternational.com/buy-a-website/. Of course, you would need $600K-$800K, but you'd have a profitable business right away and it might be easier to grow faster than when starting from scratch.

Another route could be freelancing. By doing this you would get paid and you might meet clients for a future product. You might also get ideas for a future product by observing the problems of the businesses that contract your services.

roosgit··on Ask HN: Best way to create a landing page?
In a somewhat similar situation I used PHP with `include`.

The structure was something like this:

  - index.php
  - header.php
  - sidebar.php
  - footer.php
  - page-1.php
  - page-2.php
  ...
In `header.php` I used variables for the title, description, etc. and then in each page I specified the values for those variables. This way each page had the same header HTML code, but with a different title, description and so on.
roosgit··on Ask HN: I'm losing faith in all we've invested in Apple software, what do I do?
You might be able to solve most of your problems by being more conservative about upgrading. If your business doesn't depend on having Catalina installed on day 1 on your machines, you could keep Mojave around a little bit longer. I think the same could be applied to iOS.

If everything was working fine on macOS 10.14 and iOS 12 why switch to Linux? I'm sure Android and Linux have their own issues even if they're different from Apple's. Better the devil you know than the devil you don't.
