The transit stop use case really does seem to be ramping up, including the Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority currently adding them to most surface Green Line stops: https://www.mbta.com/projects/solar-powered-e-ink-signs

Transit was one of the two core practical applications the Visionect founder mentioned in Nov 2020: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=25067359

rory096··on Culdesac Tempe: The first car-free neighborhood built from scratch in the US
The site only lists rents for studios/one-beds, but the application plan approved by the Tempe City Council includes a number of 2br apartments and a handful of 3br. The mix is as follows:

41 du/ac / 636 units

- 456 one bedroom

- 134 two bedroom

- 8 three bedroom

- 38 live-work one bedroom

Disappointingly, it shows some 152 vehicle parking spots on-site — it seems the exemption they got only applies to the residential parking requirements, and the commercial spaces are still fully parked.

The reduction to three stories (from five) also seems like a shame — the added shade and density from taller buildings would likely have made it a more livable site.

rory096··on Washington crews destroy first U.S. “murder hornet” nest
Red light is typically used at night in order to avoid destroying the eye's rhodopsin, which helps with night vision and takes at least 30 minutes of non-exposure to blue light to fully replenish. You'll see pilots and astronomers using red flashlights for this reason.

>2. Lobby to get the flight training school to practice over unpopulated areas.

This is fairly typical — even in urban centers there's typically one or more "training areas" for students to practice maneuvers. e.g. in New York: https://i.imgur.com/Djum5pX.png

rory096··on U.S. Senators Advocate H-1B Freeze for 60 Days or Longer
>Sounds like it's still above 0

Because of frictional unemployment, it's neither possible nor desirable for the unemployment rate to reach 0.

>which means you should be forced to source local talent before you're permitted to source from outside the country.

This is already a requirement; H-1B employers must attest that they can't find an employee domestically and have made a good faith attempt to do so.

>It's so strange to me that this viewport is controversial, but "Buy Local" (which I have yet to encounter someone who is against supporting local businesses) is not. This is the labor version of "Buy Local".

Buy Local is not enforced by the jackboot of the federal government. You're free to hire only non-visa workers for your business.

rory096··on What is the Strategic Petroleum Reserve?
Note that the reserve is currently at 87.4% capacity, with 635 million barrels in inventory (250.3m sweet, 384.7m sour).[0]

Plans to expand capacity to a billion barrels with the addition of a new site in Richton, MS were cancelled in 2010.[1]

rory096··on Code and data for The Economist's Big Mac index
That's not accurate. CPI adjusts both in basket composition and the more nebulous hedonic quality adjustment. The TV you bought for $500 today is not the same as the one you bought for an equivalent price 30 years ago.
rory096··on Code and data for The Economist's Big Mac index
>Why do people use CPI instead of labor

How would one differentiate real and nominal wage/salary increases?

>housing

Shelter expenditures presently constitute 33.2% of the CPI basket.

>housing or stock prices

Asset prices are only very loosely associated with inflation.

>On a similar note, why would anyone trust the federal reserve's numbers given how the federal reserve has lied in the past?

lol. (Also, BLS calculates CPI, not the Fed.)

rory096··on Lime shuts in 12 markets, lays off around 100
>9/10 times, my net displacement for the day is 0. If my net displacement is zero, I would prefer to own the medium I'm using to move.

I don't. 9/10 times, despite zero net displacement my commutes are asymmetrical — on my way there I'm in a rush, but on the way back I'm not. So I'll often take a high cost, high speed option like a scooter towards a destination, then take a more leisurely, generally free option like walking or transit back home. As a bonus, I never have to deal with storing my vehicle while I'm at my destination, or with taking it with me if I add an intermediate stop nearby before returning home.

rory096··on Lime shuts in 12 markets, lays off around 100
How many externalities are you offloading onto society with the choices you just described?
rory096··on Lime shuts in 12 markets, lays off around 100
This is a myopic view. In my city's experience, when infrastructure like parking corrals are provided scooter users tend to behave properly. When there's nowhere to leave your scooter except to balance them in a 5-inch space parallel to the curb, they become disruptive. The solution is to reallocate a minimal quantity of the vast space in our cities we currently designate for the exclusive use of automobiles, not to punish those who chose not to occupy 300+sf of space with their two-ton vehicles.

Cars kill 37,000 people in the United States each year.
rory096··on Lime shuts in 12 markets, lays off around 100
Curious how many of the scooter-haters in this thread drive cars daily. In my experience they're a huge boon to walkable, car-free or car-lite lifestyles, and all but useless in the suburban parking-minimum wastelands that characterize most of the United States' postwar built environment.

Austin has been attempting to create a plan for an extensive zoning rewrite for the last several years. It recently restarted after the previous attempt was abandoned in August 2018 (after spending $8.5 million on consultants) because "it became a political lightning rod for preservationists and neighborhood groups who warned the effort would upend longtime neighborhoods."

rory096··on Tesla Cybertruck
Why would a car-size airlock be required? A simple airtight hatch for the car to dock to (similar to a suitport) would work fine.

The first car on the moon was unpressurized because the program was a once-cancelled afterthought designed to fit into a spare cargo bay and unfold, with tight mass constraints. MOLAB was impractical because of the upmass required, not because pressurization wouldn't have been useful.
