rosstex··on An open-source, clean-room reimplementation of Microsoft Word in pure Rust
I do wonder if some company with money to burn and their backs against the wall will find a sympathetic judge in the argument that precedent be damned, clean-room implementations made with AI cannot be considered clean-room. It's too little too late to stop the rapid advancement of open tech, but that hasn't stopped courts from trying to send a message.
rosstex··on An algorithmic failure beneath the secret ballot
As an ex-CITP member, that's most definitely a human written joke.
rosstex··on Curvature Beziers: Improving on a timeless recipe
Is it bad that I don't understand this after reading it? I'm not even sure why "lie" he's referring to about bezier curves.
rosstex··on uBlock Origin Is Giving Up the Fight to Keep Ads Off Facebook
why not just run a 24/7 agent to do the work for them?
rosstex··on Your 'app' could have been a webpage (so I fixed it for you)
Y'all are missing a huge benefit of apps: offline use. The #1 reason I download apps for every booking website I use for example.

rosstex··on Princeton mandates proctoring for in-person exams, upending 133 year precedent
I was a TA at Princeton ~5 years ago, and I had forgotten about the honor code until reading this. Yes it's true, we did not proctor exams, and students seemed to take pride in it. On every test, you got the names/signatures of those sitting next to you. But also, I had a student who was accused of not putting his pencil down when the test had concluded, and the bureaucratic process to fight the accusation was so crippling that they had to take a semester of leave anyway. So I don't see harm in tearing it down.

Awesome, and Belgrade is a cool city
rosstex··on After my dad died, we found the love letters
"Prefer women" could be in a sexual context, romantic context, platonic, etc. and the commenter above didn't define it. I imagine it's hard enough for bisexual people to be asked if they're "living a lie" by having to choose a side.
rosstex··on Human Fovea Detector
>clear up your brain

Just to be clear, we don't actually know what that does right? Like, there's no link to this making up for poor sleep or improving your cognitive function right?

rosstex··on The PhD Metagame: Don't try to reform science – not yet
As someone who left their PhD, it rubs me with how accurate it is lol
rosstex··on A 2FA app that tells you when you get `314159` (2024)
No one noticed that you did, in fact, get dubs
rosstex··on “Normal” engineers are the key to great teams
Autism? Does it really matter? People have different priorities in life. Some people stay in academia because they're afraid of the real world.
rosstex··on AI tools are spotting errors in research papers
Why not just skip the human and have AI write, evaluate and submit the papers?
rosstex··on Show HN: Bayleaf – Building a low-profile wireless split keyboard
I once did a ton of research and settled on an ergonomic split keyboard. I ended up using it for a while but never fully got used to it enough to actually type well with it. In fact, it screwed up my typing and now I make more mistakes than I used to years later. I regret it so much. I don't understand split keyboards.

rosstex··on Google's Chrome Browser Starts Disabling uBlock Origin
I used Firefox for 5 years until I met my husband, who pointed out how much time I waste dealing with Firefox rendering bugs and freezing and how much it aggravates him. After the 15th time I switched to Chrome and it's helped my relationship grow. But I use uBlock Origin religiously so it's time to go hunting again...
rosstex··on What if regular exercise is the best cognitive exercise?
Even so, the number of people in the comments asking for book recommendations on fitness and nutrition shows that many people here would rather cling to their comfort zone of digging deeper. You can re-evaluate words on paper all day, but it will never, ever compare to the understanding you get from actually trying the thing you want to understand.
