rr808··on Digital minimalism
Went to a family reunion and an aunt pulled out a 15 year old Nokia. That's my dream. Unfortunately I need uber and MFAs.
rr808··on If IPv4 were land
Alaska seems to have a lot of IP addresses...
rr808··on Solar power is becoming bigger than nuclear
bro the sun hardly rises above the horizon for 4 months of the year when power is needed the most.
rr808··on Solar power is becoming bigger than nuclear
Wood burning heat is perfect compliment to solar in remote areas.
rr808··on Solar power is becoming bigger than nuclear
That might work in The SouthWest of the USA, but the Northern bits dont get enough sun to get through the day, so you'll need fossil fuel plants all day night for the Winter. If they're there already its cheaper to use all day in the summer as well.
rr808··on Google has officially turned these Nest thermostats back into dumb thermostats
My wife bugs me to replace physical light switches with smart one. Sorry I'm too busy for that one lol.
rr808··on We should be more ambitious with the software we build
I really liked this talk about how the premise of "software is eating the world" is incorrect. I think AI coding tools proves the point that software part is easy, its the hardware that is the important part. We can't really be more ambitious with software when ultimate pure software is limited in what is possible.

rr808··on America Has Lost 200k of Jobs in Media, Film and the Arts. How Much Is AI?
If only there was a service where you paid a fixed price for a bundle and you had a set top box that had all these channels together in one package. Of course you'd have a lot of channels you never looked at but overall it would be more efficient.
rr808··on Roku developer repositories moved from GitHub to GitLab
Worth mentioning that Roku is being acquired by Fox so in the virtue battle with Microsoft neither are clean
rr808··on Bringing uv and ty together
The other great thing about type annotations is that you dont have to use them. Coming from strongly typed language background its life changing for me to sometimes rely on them sometimes just ignore.
rr808··on Java sealed classes and exhaustive pattern matching
Yes it is like French poetry - not many people like it. I've been on a Spark project the last 2 years and its a horrible code base. Everyone on the team hates it, will move to PySpark next year. Scala is dead.
rr808··on Do dentists know what they're doing?
Interesting, I haven't heard of it before. Looks like its not available in USA because FDA has more rules than Europe which is a first.

rr808··on China Overtakes U.S. For First Time as Top Spender on R&D in 2024
That's the problem right. Learning Chinese wont help you, China is a closed shop, no immigrants, no sharing work with anyone outside the country, no employing people outside China, no cooperation with any other country really; just keep buying their stuff.
rr808··on GPT-6 Astra helped me jailbreak my Kindle
Basically Apple devices, which are becoming ubiquitous.
rr808··on `123456' password used in Danish CPR data breach
At this stage all SSN, NI numbers, CPR etc should just be made public. Its assuming its some kind of secret is the problem. Its an ID not a password.
rr808··on We're going to need default hard budget caps on pretty much everything
Uncapped usage is just corporate infinite scrolling in social media. Once you're hooked you just can't stop.
rr808··on OpenAI safety leader quits, warning AI company's culture is 'broken'
Absolutely. Self driving cars/rideshares have the same problem. If a driverless car hits who who pays the damages? Needs the government to set some rules or it just wont happen.
rr808··on 500k facial scans at UK stations yield no arrests, 1 false positive
Its just a start though right? Most people here are male and aren't that scared to be out and about. The women in my life have a much different outlook on things, I really think CCTVs and AI can really help make things safer.

You can see with videos already helping to catch people (and potentially scaring people off from committing crime in the first place).

Yes its a problem in the US where its criminal system is inconsistent at best, but the UK at least has much fairer legal system.

rr808··on Linux support is coming to Snapdragon X2 series
Intel panther lake is already very close. Good enough for me to be happy with it.
rr808··on Amazon blocks Meta’s new Muse AI agent from shopping on amazon.com
It makes total sense for Amazon to block agents. It sucks having to manually check multiple sites for prices and delivery of something you want so is easier just to use Amazon which is usually very good. If people start using agents Amazon is less likely to get the sale and are more vulnerable to competition. Better to kill this trend off asap.
rr808··on Gemini 3.8 Live and 3.8 Live Extended Thinking
In Maps? Or is it Android Auto? I have Google built it. When I push the button on steering wheel I hardly know which layer I'm talking to.
rr808··on LG denies TV spying claims, says tracking and snooping concerns 'not true'
Everyone complains but realistically TVs are so incredibly cheap now, I can't believe anyone would make money from hardware alone. I mean a Samsung 55in 4k tv for $300 delivered for free is crazy, let alone the $179 insignia one.
rr808··on Muse – Meta’s personal AI agent
Tech is a rather minor part of the world of knowledge. How many languages do you know? Do you know the styles of Renaissance painters? Slept with super-model? Ever seen an elephant stampede? Meditated by the Ganges? Read thousands of stories? Climbed a mountain so high you need Oxygen? Tech stuff is so boring.
rr808··on How accurate have Ed Zitron's AI skeptic predictions been?
To me and most other non-West coast Americans its obvious he's right. Which is a good explanation of why SV has the resources and success it has because it can do things no one else believes in. While the rest of the world will always be catching up.
rr808··on How I find problems to solve as a staff engineer
I wish our most senior staff eng/architects actually worked on stuff that is useful. They love playing around with new technology that has nothing to do with our current platform or where we're going. Sometimes they'll try to fix some thing the last architect started on before they too move on to another job.
rr808··on Wi-Fi 8 is the first wireless upgrade in years that isn't chasing speed
Incidentally I ran cat6 to a few locations but its so thick and stiff I kinda regret it. The internet seems to think 5a is more than enough and 6 was a waste.
rr808··on Wi-Fi 8 is the first wireless upgrade in years that isn't chasing speed
Powerline networking is worth trying for this too.
rr808··on A week of using Codex more than Claude
Copilot and Devin. They're actually really good too.
rr808··on Hook, hold, harvest and hide: Meta's alleged strategy laid out in first week
Luckily we have rule of law here so if you say someone in particular needs to go to prison there needs to be a law that you have proven to break. Just because you dont like someone you can't just lock them up.
rr808··on France to ban unsolicited telemarketing calls
Me too. The problem is now I trust Meta with much of this instead of the FCC which is awkward for me. I use on Messenger and Whatsapp much more often for voice calls, and you know exactly who is calling.
