rsync··on Evidence of a spying operation by ICE against left-wing social movements
Fly.io signup IP, huh ?

A proper warrant must be respected and adhered to …

… but was it a proper warrant or just a bluff and, further, was the customer notified?

I insist on knowing the answer to this question and if you are a customer of fly.io (I am not) you should too.

rsync··on Two high-speed trains collide near Toledo, Spain
This is exactly the thought I always have.

It seems impossible to imagine that there are any layers of defense in depth involved here… Because it should be so easy to avoid.

rsync··on Microsoft offers mass buyouts for roughly a quarter of its workforce
Don't call me Shirley.
rsync··on DeepInfer: High-performance inference framework for DeepSeek models
“ Or, are you saying this is a tactical move from a higher level (Chinese gov interests)?”

What country produces all of the ASICs used in contemporary bitcoin mining?

The faster we get to a good enough open model, the sooner it gets burned to hardware, and the sooner the transition to (relatively) low tech, low margin, high volume cards to run it on …

… and those are built in China.

rsync··on Ultramarine 1 Flash
I don't do these kind of tasks but I imagine that in the 'pi' harness I could just instruct the model to use command line pdf/latex manipulation tools to create all manner of document outputs ...

rsync··on What I self-host
Dns4eu is free, has adblocking, and you can deploy it right now.
rsync··on We want you to build the next Git platform on Cloudflare
I build things.

I build them on machines I own placed in racks I have they key to.

There aren't any resource limits to hit and legal service is brought directly to me - not to a provider nor middleman.

There also isn't a global MITM inserting itself between me and my users.

I can't imagine doing it any other way and I implore you not to build things on complex, fragile, highly abstracted foundations.

rsync··on Loss of cell identity drives human aging: Two new papers
I think the Nick Lane books are quite good - especially:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power,_Sex,_Suicide

which, IIRC, discussed the notion of an semi-autonomous population of mitochondria in long lived tissues (like muscle) which could be curated over ones lifetime by high intensity exercise stress. Future mitochondria in these long-lived tissues would then not be descended from the poorer performing members who were weeded out through apoptosis.

rsync··on Make Tmux the OS
"... because HTML email support is must have nowadays ..."

I don't find this to be the case.

I use (al)pine exclusively and with only three or four hacks/workarounds manage a normal, modern email workflow.

Unlike SMS where my unix-based telecom results in green bubbles, in the email world there is not even that small indication that anything is different on my end ...

rsync··on Why should I have to pay more for buses if I don't use a smartphone?
"Recently took a bus from an airport in Nordrhein-Westfalen ..."

Can anyone (Germans ?) confirm that this was, indeed, the only possible mechanism to pay for this single bus trip ?

I'm genuinely curious as my experiences in Switzerland - as late as last November - were that many different durations and service levels of paper ticket were able to be purchased, with cash or bank card, from a ticket machine.

Is the experience really that divergent in Germany ?

rsync··on OKI Develops 124-Layer PCB Technology
OKI ? As in, my cellular scanner ?
rsync··on Pi 1.0
Thanks.

This seems like an obvious configuration option - I can imagine someone disliking the italics as well…

rsync··on Pi 1.0
"Been running it almost barebones vanilla for a couple of months. Just a bunch of basic extensions and some skills."

I am also using pi exclusively after having had decent success with openhands but begrudging all of the docker infrastructure ... and all of the emojis.

My only pain point is that in my extremely common and boring workflow, which is pi inside of gnu screen inside of OSX terminal.app ... all reasoning/thinking text is blinking ... like old fashioned ANSI blink on a BBS.

I cannot figure out how to disable the blinking thought/reasoning text ...

rsync··on Sudo – A dedicated music player designed around listening to music
I use and maintain an "ipod" in the form of an old pixel 3 with 128 GB of memory that has no SIM card and no software installed except for VLC.

It stays in airplane mode. It has a real headphone jack.

rsync··on San Francisco Onion Futures Company
"Yes, it's primarily a novelty/art thing."

If you're going to do this with your life you have to believe that you're necessary - and you are - everyone wants to drive their fancy cars and their big fucking houses they can't afford they need you - you're necessary.

The only reason any of this works is (you) have (your) hand on the scale in their favor. (You) take it away, everything gets really fucking fair, really fucking fast - and don't no one want that.

They want all of the things (you) have to give them and .... then they want to pretend they don't know where it came from.

Are you aware of sqlite3-rsync ?

It is a tool that was created by the author of sqlite. It does just what you would expected to do.

rsync··on Google Antigravity TOS: 3rd party usage can get Google account suspended
“… There is no way of contacting anyone at Google about it …”

Of course there is: you pay your lawyer to send correspondence by registered mail.

Then you have them send followup correspondence a week or so later.

You will absolutely get a response.

rsync··on True Rate of Unemployment
“… These are later accounted for when you sell. Though AFAIK if you sell at a loss you can't get the Vorabpauschale back directly, but it would increase the losses you can potentially apply …”

That sounds simple and elegant.

rsync··on M5Stack Launches PaperMono
So many of these M5Stack products are not actually stackable and have no physical relation to their "stack" system.
rsync··on OpenAI Jalapeño: Better than Nvidia Blackwell
No, this is because they want to IPO soon.

If the chips weren't this compelling they would have something different to announce.

These are paperclip maximizers who just happen to wear human skin - there is no underlying premise nor ideological goal.

rsync··on iCloud+ Hide My Email addresses will remain on icloud.com
Yes, address is verifiable.
rsync··on iCloud+ Hide My Email addresses will remain on icloud.com
A reminder:

Neither visa nor MasterCard networks have the ability to verify cardholder name.

Everyone behaves as if they do, but your name cannot be verified.

Which is to say, all of these cards have name anonymization, not just robinhood.

rsync··on The treasury bond mess: is this the demise of the US as a safe haven?
No, your parent is correct.

In addition to the pragmatic point about how nobody actually paid those rates, there is an ideological mismatch as well:

Those very high marginal tax rates were not enacted to address inequality or any of the typical social goals that we think of when we advocate for higher marginal tax rates. Rather, they were imposed to combat war profiteering during the WW2 period:

"The crisis of World War II led Congress to pass four excess profits statutes between 1940 and 1943. The 1940 rates ranged from 25 to 50 percent and the 1941 ones from 35 to 60 percent. In 1942, a flat rate of 90 percent was adopted, with a postwar refund of 10 percent; in 1943 the rate was increased to 95 percent, with a 10 percent refund."[1]

Can you argue for a very high marginal tax rate as a means of wealth distribution and furthering progressive policy ? Yes, of course you can.

Have we ever had one ? Not really.

rsync··on New Worlds: We are living in the future of J.G. Ballard or William Gibson
I highly recommend the “collected interviews” of Ballard that was released some years ago … very interesting exchanges and some almost shockingly present judgments about the future… Especially the future of media in the YouTube age.

Then I would read Empire of the Sun.
