rubyfan··on Wikipedia’s nonprofit status questioned by D.C. U.S. attorney
So the issue is “allowing foreign actors to manipulate information and spread propaganda to the American public.” and they are going after wikipedia instead of say TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, X?
rubyfan··on An end to all this prostate trouble?
I read the comment as insinuating people stop taking care of themselves as much after children and develop unhealthy habits.
rubyfan··on Mark Zuckerberg says social media is over
Didn’t he also say the metaverse was the next big thing?
rubyfan··on Solidjs: Simple and performant reactivity for building user interfaces
Ok, you've got my attention with documentation like this

const [first, setFirst] = createSignal("JSON");

const [last, setLast] = createSignal("Bourne");

rubyfan··on Evertop: E-ink IBM XT clone with 100+ hours of battery life
I was thinking the same thing when I saw 80186 and the display.

I had an XT in high school and used to hit up the BBSs at 2400 baud watching each character light up on my green monochrome display. It was glorious!

rubyfan··on Herb: Powerful and seamless HTML-aware ERB parsing and tooling
Yeah, this what makes me sad. Your premise is that SPA is the default for web development and you imply server side rendering is not “modern”.
rubyfan··on Herb: Powerful and seamless HTML-aware ERB parsing and tooling
This explanation makes me a bit sad.

> What these do is let you do things like turn a collection of objects into a the HTML for a table and send that over the wire. The client then just has time to display the table and not assemble it from e.g. JSON.

rubyfan··on Google is winning on every AI front
I think many were rightly adopting DEI initiatives in an environment post me-too and post George Floyd. I don’t think it was driven by hype but more a reaction to the environment which heightened awareness of societal injustices. Awareness led to all sorts of things - conversation, compassion, attempts to do better in society and the workplace, and probably law suits. You can question how motivated corporations were to adopt DEI initiatives but I think it’d be wrong to say it was driven by hype.
rubyfan··on Google is winning on every AI front
Yes corporate leaders do chase hype and they also believe in magic.

I think companies implement DEI initiatives for different reasons than hype though. Many are now abandoning DEI ostensibly out of fear due to the change in U.S. regime.

rubyfan··on Google is winning on every AI front
Sadly it’s become common for many mediocre employees in corporate environments to defer to ChatGPT, receive erroneous output and accept it as truth.

There are now commonly corporate goon squads whose job is to drive AI adoption without care for actual impact to results. Usage of AI is the KR.

rubyfan··on IBM Announces the Z17 Mainframe Powered by Telum II Processors
One where legacy businesses still use the cobol programs developed in prior decades.

I recently had to wait two quarters to launch a product because the only person who knew what some cobol accounting program did was out on leave.

This is one of the many reasons many big corporations fail to innovate. It is very hard (near impossible) to implement new systems in an environment dominated by old ones (not talking only about software and hardware here, also organizational dynamics).

First sentence from wikipedia says:

Casey Means is an American functional medicine/holistic medicine physician, entrepreneur and author.

rubyfan··on Meta puts stop on promotion of tell-all book by former employee
Seems like it’s just preventing the author from promoting it due to some provision of a severance agreement.

Doesn’t seem to actually prevent publication.

rubyfan··on Trump's Federal Funding Freeze and Mean-Field Game Theory
> A cross-the-board stop/cut also neuters the pork-barreling and self-serving political advocacy that would kill more nuanced reductions.

I doubt that in the long run. This is just a grab of control that will likely result in one set interested parties being replaced by another.

rubyfan··on Judge ends man's 11-year quest to dig up landfill and recover $765M in Bitcoin
Yeah a lot of us that knew of bitcoin but didn’t really get in to it seem to remember generating a coin or two but can’t remember where we left it.

rubyfan··on Apple seeks to defend Google's billion-dollar payments in search case
Sure maybe, but that depends the DOJ’s actions. Also depends on the buyer, the search engine alternatives, whether DOJ allow Google to pay to be the default, etc.
rubyfan··on Apple seeks to defend Google's billion-dollar payments in search case
Defaulting the search to Google in Safari in no way impairs the users ability to choose an alternative search engine. Apple have always left the search setting changeable, for a long time have allowed 3rd party browsers and have allowed other browsers to be the default system browser. This is hardly a monopoly and it’s no secret that Google is paying them gobs of money to be the default. It’s a separate issue from their appstore business entirely where security and privacy are legitimate arguments for the control they exert on that business.
rubyfan··on Apple seeks to defend Google's billion-dollar payments in search case
They might argue they provide Safari for free and as part of their business model earn a fee for referring users to the preferred search engine vs something substandard. This is a very common business model on just about every web publisher today.
rubyfan··on Apple seeks to defend Google's billion-dollar payments in search case

rubyfan··on DuckDuckGo donates $25k to the Perl and Raku Foundation
If it was a business model then people would charge, but it’s not a business model it’s an ideal that leads to a common good.

There are parallels to funding education and scholarship programs in public universities. Corporations often rely on human resources around office locations and they spend in order to ensure a steady flow of talent development. Funding open source is not that different of an issue. One challenge here is IT/Tech departments are often cost centers that are strictly budget controlled and it’s harder to make a case for non-essential costs like funding open source.
