rubyron··on Show HN: MP3 to Text
What’s the pricing? What speech-to-text engine is being used?

Clicking on the Sign Up button on iOS Safari does nothing.

Clicking on the Get Started button takes me to an Upload Video form - not what I expected from a mp3-to-text service.

rubyron··on Treating children for worms yields long-term benefits, says new study
I’m a retired DVM. What you say is true, but I just want to caution anyone reading this that ivermectin is deadly for collies and many herding breeds. Rule of thumb is “white feet, do not treat.”
rubyron··on To Get More Replies, Say Less (2017)
It wasn’t just the length of the email body they changed in the 3rd variant... they also changed the subject line from “Welcome to Netlify” to “Question...”, but that change wasn’t mentioned as a potential contributor to the good result.

I’m betting that change resulted in a big increase in open rate. I’m conditioned to ignore “Welcome to AcmeCo”-style emails.

rubyron··on A Google bot scrapes pricing info by adding items to carts
An abandoned cart reminder email sent a few hours later has a ridiculously high conversion rate - around 15% in my experience. Online vendors aren’t going to stop that practice, especially when the big e-commerce platforms make it easy to do.
rubyron··on A Google bot scrapes pricing info by adding items to carts
Well, theoretically, your Add To Cart button could have an href with a path that’s banned in robots.txt, but overridden with JS.

But most online stores should be happy to have Google crawling their prices and showing up under the Shopping results.

rubyron··on Show HN: Rainbow – an attempt to display colour on a B&W monitor
I see brown. My wife and 13-yr-old son both see green, blue, and pink. Same iPhone, same time.
rubyron··on Ask HN: What did you make during lockdown?
Thanks! I always try to brand projects with some kind of named mascot where possible.

I made Timmy (https://timmytimer.com), a social pomodoro timer with free web and mobile apps. Sort of like “Twitter for productivity.” No login required.

It’s getting a lot of use by college students and coders. Pretty fascinating to see what everyone is working on or learning. The social accountability and leaderboard are proving to be strong motivators.

rubyron··on Reddit Welcomes Michael Seibel to Board of Directors
Agree. Love the iOS app.
rubyron··on Reddit Welcomes Michael Seibel to Board of Directors
Interesting. It opens on the deep link in my app every time with iPhone XS Max.
rubyron··on Ask HN: Which tools have made you a much better programmer?
The Pomodoro technique has helped my productivity more than anything. So much so that I built Timmy (https://timmytimer.com ) and added social features for some added motivation (all timers are public - think of it like "Twitter for productivity"). Free and no login required if you want to try.
rubyron··on Zipline: Drone delivery of medical supplies
That’s one of the best logos/icons I’ve seen lately.
rubyron··on Amazon.com was down
Yep, back up for me, too. Lucky them - DNS outtages can sometimes take a lot longer to resolve (heh).
rubyron··on Amazon.com was down
Wow, down for me too (DNS doesn't resolve, using google dns). Wonder how many $$millions they're losing every minute.
rubyron··on Better Box Shadows (CSS)
Very cool!
rubyron··on Ask HN: What's your #1 productivity hack?
Something I recently built has helped me stay focused and productive more than anything I've ever tried:

Timmy (https://timmytimer.com) is a free web app that combines a Pomodoro timer with social accountability and a leaderboard. The mix of those elements has been super helpful for me and a lot of other devs and students.

rubyron··on Kick the Shit Out of Procrastination
The Pomodoro technique has been hugely valuable to me over the years. So much so that I recently built a web app for it that doubles as a work log with social accountability:

rubyron··on Show HN: Timmy - a Pomodoro timer with a social twist (inspired by HN)
OP here. Five days ago I got inspired by this post on HN:

https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=22806609

and decided to build something for myself. Maybe others will like it. Very early MVP, go easy please. :)

rubyron··on Brandchirps – Simple Brand Monitoring
I use Google Alerts for this sort of thing, and was surprised to not see it mentioned on your site when discussing alternatives. What makes BrandChirps better than GA?
rubyron··on Reflecting on My Failure to Build a Billion-Dollar Company
Sahil, thanks for sharing your story to date. I remember meeting with you in 2011 in Palo Alto shortly after your launch, and I could tell then you had the “right stuff.” Proud of you man.
rubyron··on Reality has a surprising amount of detail (2017)
It could be based on speed rather than mass. Above 5-10 mph or so, you turn a motorcycle with pretty much total countersteering, forcefully pushing forward on the inside hand grip to get the motorcycle to lean over. The faster you're going, the further you need to lean the motorcycle.
rubyron··on Tacocopter - Flying Robots Deliver Tacos To You
Damn straight she's legit: http://starsimpson.com/
rubyron··on Font Awesome, the pictographic font designed for use with Twitter Bootstrap
For good measure, I just registered the twitter handle @fonticons, too, which of course you're welcome to have. My contact info is in my profile.
