rusk··on Denmark set to allow return of 'physical force' in school
If a child’s actions are ultimately going to get them hurt in life restraint is support.
rusk··on Denmark set to allow return of 'physical force' in school
> not uncommon for certain trouble makers to be placed in rooms, or in a broom closet

That is shocking to me and I went to school in the 80s. Sounds like there was good cause but the pendulum swung too far. Now it’s coming back and things are settling.

It’s funny because you normally think of the Nordics as being so far ahead in things like this but I guess we all have our blind spots.

Would you let them near your bank account? I’d be cautious about letting it near my photos and it’s much harder to back up a bank account.

I think the days of this stuff managing serious stuff is at least 5 years off and I don’t believe the economy can keep the current wave of technology afloat for so long.

The tech is there so likely there will continue to be progress in focused areas much like with the web c 2003 but by the time it comes around again there will be an uphill battle for hearts and minds. The social effects could extend the next AI winter long beyond technology readiness.

I can see a pan European project like CERN or Airbus where sovereign nations with aligned values pool their resources, as being useful here
rusk··on Chat-based Large Language Models replicate the mechanisms of a psychic's con
Did an AI do that on its own though? I heard it was human mathematicians using a sophisticated machine as a tool.
rusk··on Spain Orders Blocks on Archive.today and Its Mirrors
You would need institutions to do this? What do we have besides global megacorps with the resources for this? Universities perhaps training models for their local catchment?
rusk··on XCancel service is suspended until further notice
It's ineptitude. Of course it is. Otherwise it would be indefensible.

EDIT in which I clumsily express my weariness at hearing some of the smartest people in the world claim they “didn’t know” because they have arbitrated foolishness against liability

rusk··on Adversarial Fashion Makes a Statement on AI Panopticon
You need a system that does gait analysis, which requires upgrades across the board. All those sunk costs on pervasive facial recon systems. Sucks teeth.
rusk··on Adversarial Fashion Makes a Statement on AI Panopticon
As Phil Zimmerman might opine, it’s not so much about defying every attack, it’s moreso about making it more difficult en masse by increasing the unit cost. Though perhaps in the 90s surveillance tech wasn’t quite scaling as quickly as it is now.
rusk··on llama.cpp
It’s not. Try pulling updates after a rebase. Very much not the same as piping arbitrary disembodied text into your shell.

Pharma and Healthcare was the implication I believe. The US approach to these things has a bad reputation internationally though I am informed that it’s an amazing system if you’re rich.

rusk··on The old-school way of keeping the summer heat out of your home
Yeah I think that’s done. Tragically this technique coupled with a poor selection of materials was the structural cause of the grenfell fire. We see this kind of panelling around various European cities. “Cladding” it is called and it serves a few different purposes with regards to thermal management.
rusk··on Substack writers, you need a website
I actively skip stuff that’s on substack just like I do medium and blogger. Maybe there’s good stuff on there but it’s usually a by-word for slop. I figure if anyone has anything that interesting to say they’d make the effort and put it up on something more serious looking.

> If there are tens of thousands, it may make you feel less bad about tossing them.

That’s a great point.

It doesn’t eliminate the problem but it helps break it up a bit, which is definitely helpful.

I had considered this. Up cycling them as eco bricks but that’s nearly as destructive as burning. Life would be so much easier if I had no qualms.
rusk··on Book Corners: Community map of neighborhood book exchange spots
That’s no good to me. It’s the physical volumes I need to get rid of. I couldn’t give a fiddlers about what’s in them
rusk··on Book Corners: Community map of neighborhood book exchange spots
I have lots of old books that aren’t very good. That I can’t give away. What do I do with them? I have this strange taboo feeling about destroying books, even bad ones!
rusk··on Be skeptical of OpenAI's rogue hacker agent story
Unless you’re hoping the regulators will build you a moat.

Stupid, yeah but that’s the kind of thinking that a highly leveraged and desperate situation breeds.

Maybe that’s the point!
rusk··on Pebble Mega Update – July 2026
My main issue was it was bricked. I had given up on it and then just got an email out of the blue. Just because I bought direct from them I guess.

They didn’t demand any proof or that I send the device back or anything. They just gave me the money which due to exchange rate fluctuations actual turned a profit!

rusk··on Understanding the AI Economy

rusk··on Understanding the AI Economy
How’s this for a working theory. Economic actors that were established doing the “easy stuff” that got displaced first got a head start on everyone else and started low balling on the harder stuff and that’s why we’re seeing impacts in the parts of the economy that aren’t being directly hit by AI. It could explain why people who know stuff are finding themselves squeezed for cost in every direction even though their specific area defies automation. There is a latency at play here while all the corner cutting of the cost based competitors mount. Not sure what is the outcome when the inevitable correction kicks in but the economic impact will be long lasting as skilled workers leave the industry and we are left with decades of slop to clean up.
