russdill··on The Reconstruction of Torn Documents
The answer to the question is still no. The material no longer exists
russdill··on Uranium cubes reveal why the German nuclear project failed
The Vintage Space has an excellent video that does talk a fair bit about individually scientists feelings toward the Nazi regime

russdill··on I don't understand quantum physics (2018)
If time did not continue into the future, it would not be observable. Therefore hypothesis that it will continue to do so is not disprovable.

As far as multiverse goes, there isn't any inherit value in assuming that the wavefunction as given actually happens, it's just a simpler explanation than trying to come up with (arguable unprovable) ways to cull the wavefunction.

russdill··on I don't understand quantum physics (2018)
So time extending into the future is not a useful hypothesis? Space continuing beyond the cosmic horizon is not a useful hypothesis? The past entropy of the past being arbitrarily low (vs what is essentially last tuesdayism) is not a useful hypothesis?
russdill··on The Intel 8087 chip: floating-point addition and subtraction
There's a ton of coordination lately on P6 microcode. Would love to see what twists and turns there are supporting the older isa on newer architectures
russdill··on The Intel 8087 chip: floating-point addition and subtraction
But they can, it's just not accelerated by hardware built specifically for the task
russdill··on Fingerprints are the new cookies
This very often will trigger cloudflare protection.
russdill··on ETH-68: Ethernet Audio Interface for Linux
Thank you for taking the time to write up the work properly. It's quite refreshing to read content like this after what's been the standard fare that's been posted here at HN.
russdill··on Trump administration is suspending Microsoft from a green card program
Really with birthrates the way they are going, unless radical life extension comes soon it's going to be a problem that "solves itself".
russdill··on Trump administration is suspending Microsoft from a green card program
And what do you suppose drives the growth in housing?
russdill··on Trump administration is suspending Microsoft from a green card program
Which makes cutting back on immigration a short term solution.
russdill··on Trump administration is suspending Microsoft from a green card program
Fixing the visa program is a thing that can be done to improve things across the board. Punishing individual companies that the executive "arbitrarily" chooses is dictator shit.
russdill··on Trump administration is suspending Microsoft from a green card program
Housing is not a finite resource. Not building more housing is a choice.
russdill··on Trump administration is suspending Microsoft from a green card program
The government will take action on this, but not cruise ship visas. This has nothing to do with "explotation" and everything to do with trying to end immigration, even of (or especially of) highly skilled workers.
russdill··on I switched to Brave
Yes, my history with brave involves doing that several times as they add additional mechanisms
russdill··on I switched to Brave
I'd like to switch friends and family over to brave, but trying to avoid ads that might confuse them was kind of the point...so....
russdill··on OpenAI GPT–6 Astra breaks Enigma message that has resisted solution since 2005
The bombe method requires a crib of sufficient length
russdill··on Show HN: I made a flight simulator, except you're just a passenger
One thing that really kills this for me is it just takes a straight line flight. It really needs to take flight data and pick a track that performed that flight so that turns occur.
russdill··on Sean Carroll explains the biggest ideas in the universe – Full Interview [video] (2025)
I think it's coming from when he gets a question about speculative physics.

The of course anything is possible, we just don't know, but it's highly unlikely.

russdill··on Flock cameras used to arrest a child for playing on a swing?
Decent swing chains $250. Mass surveillance recurring cost of $5000/mo. Someone please help me budget this, I'm dying.
russdill··on Eating Fruit Skins
It's very common to use a peeler to peel the skin, then keep peeling until you get to the seeds and just use those peeled strips.
russdill··on Rings forged from meteorites may have been fashionable among ancient Greek elite
They go completely dark at a very high altitude. I feel like a bright sunny day would give you a better chance of seeing a falling rock, at least once it gets closer to the ground
russdill··on Using the railway network as a flatbed scanner
Taking this to the extreme is doing this from space, which is how many imaging satellites actually work.
russdill··on Mushroom behind 'tiny people' hallucinations identified
poe may have won this time...
russdill··on Spaghettifying DRAM
Seriously. Got tired of reading the same idea over and over reworded endlessly.
russdill··on Mushroom behind 'tiny people' hallucinations identified
This would be laughably easy to disprove. Just put multiple people in the same room and have them privately describe what they see.
russdill··on Pixel Watch 5
Ikr, I've been holding out with my 2020 Garmin venu thinking this would be a big refresh
russdill··on Pixel Watch 5
I want all the things. Overlay an OLED display on top of e paper.
russdill··on The “mechanical miracle” that ruined Mark Twain’s life
Many of the same technologies enables woodcut presses which already existed.
russdill··on Magnitude 7.4 Earthquake – 5 km S of San José del Palmar, Colombia
We are actually pretty good at predicting the long term for specific regions. This allows building codes to be based on the seismic activity of the region. Sadly this isn't something that's practical in many parts of the world
