rustystump··on LLMs are making formal software verification feasible at a much larger scale
i meant reproduction? not that thinking was doing it but that each person would have some unique aspect to their thinking based on dna and env.
rustystump··on New iPad mini
Yes? 30-60 is night and day so i have a hard time believing this.

There is an argument to be made on battery life 60-120 but my god i can instantly tell between 60-120. The key part is the input responsiveness more than anything else. If you tell someone to look at “frame rate” few will notice the dif but have them grab a window and wiggle it around, obv dif with responsiveness

rustystump··on No signs of AI payoff outside the tech sector
Too true. Even on the software side i see people blindly “claude make it faster with no mistakes” and gushing about it when the output is genuinely not good not because claude isnt good but because the user of it isnt.

We got a new a CNC machine and everyone is carving away marveling at how easily it chips away at metal when the result is a jagged mess.

rustystump··on No signs of AI payoff outside the tech sector
It is most impactful in tech because tech is almost nothing but languages and more so super expensive languages where one hour of an “authors” time can cost thousands with a supply demand issue so bad workers are imported from across the world.

Artists were already starving. The more physical trades are…physical not language so a plumber still plums. Maybe now they ask gemini instead of google tho.

Areas related most to…language are the most impact by large language models? The one that i think is just as impacted is education because it is also almost all language driven.

I see zero sign of any of the new mills coming around. Steel, crops, farming, none of it has changed and what little has is from…the software side or…language.

The SV world really over indexes on how much software can do.

rustystump··on LLMs are making formal software verification feasible at a much larger scale
Sorry if this sounds rough, no.

Saying that is like saying everything is about combination because well, it is even the creative stuff if you are pedantic.

The wibbily wobbly dna of humans is how we keep recombining things into new shit. Comp sci absolutely has deep creativity in it.

rustystump··on Feds suspect ransom negotiator ran ShinyHunters extortion site
As much as this is a bit of a shit post I dont think it is wrong. Both sides behind the scenes are in pretty strong lockstep.

Thered need to be changes in how lobbying and certain countries are registered to make a dent. Everyone says age but I dont think that matters as much as the lobbying industry. Young people are every bit as corruptible as the old.

rustystump··on Suicide rates highest ever among middle-aged men
The world is large. I will say what I used to say when people complained about how awful dating was pre social media, if you are shopping at a bar, it is like shopping in the gutter, you may find a gem but more often it is shit.

There are alot of women who want kids but they likely are not in the pool you engage with. Go to a conservative US christian state, join a church, engage with the community, it is easy. I bet the issue is that you do in fact have a standard and that standard is the barrier.

If it helps, almost every wealthy man i have known engaged with escorts or prostitutes at some point so I wouldnt view it as shameful and who knows, you may learn something about yourself in the process.

rustystump··on Do dentists know what they're doing?
i have had a dropped filling for almost 2 decades. It is my test for if a dentist is crap. The number that dont even mention it is surprising.
rustystump··on Felix Rieseberg Homepage
Unlike others, the issue I have is not using AI to have fun and be creative, I do it all the time like a one off table top character sheet tool.

It is the claim that the 60 agents produced competent optimized code when the response here clearly shows that is not the case. But I can excuse ignorance when someone is learning but there was no learning here. There was no interest in learning anything more than “i like that, no not that, make it run better”.

Then this bold claim about how creativity has somehow fundamentally changed because they found a new kind of ink for their printer. Sure kid.

rustystump··on Felix Rieseberg Homepage
As someone who knows something in the space he brags about, it is fascinating to see the dunning kruger effect in realtime here. Even with all those claudes in “adversarial review”.

Realtime soft lighting is possible on mobile but if he had known that, i bet claude woulda been able to do it but he didnt.

If there was even the speckle of curiosity, he would have asked beyond “dont make mistakes” but i guess he was too busy riding his bike while burning 50k to make a blog.

rustystump··on Felix Rieseberg Homepage
This is both creative and soulless at the same time. It runs like puke and reading the creating of, it is obvious why.

AI still cannot solve ignorance and all these examples from and of people/anthropic really showcase this. It is like watching a monkey shake a box of crayons until something interesting comes out.

Anthropic 30k mrs a day, custom version control to handle the churn vs some dude and an email list.

rustystump··on QGIS: No AI contributions permitted
This is pretty spot on. AI will find some off the ball edge case that is a valid edge case but perhaps an undefined expectation of the code. Avoiding the additional complexity of handling it keep everything more grokable and clean.

Sadly, people seem to think all these edges AI finds are valid and must be fix and were never thought about. Most were thought about and deemed not worth the additional 50 if statements to handle. Cyclomatic complexity has exploded exponentially with AI and everyones response is “no no no you just need to use opus 6.5 and it will work”

rustystump··on What ArtCraft's Vibe-Coded Apps Say About Adobe
I learned photoshop long before programming and the idea someone will vibe up not just photoshop but all the apps is absolute ballocks.

It isnt that there is no market for a cheaper version but people forget the amount of craft it takes to get something from 80% to 99%.

If all you can add is baby sitting agents, then you will never reach beyond 80%. Yes, spend 10m on tokens and 2 years improving and it may become useful but isnt that how it always was? Ela figma and canva?

Europeans are crazy arrogant and racist but it is the soft kind lacking self awareness.

Every person I have ever spoken to who is not white has told me they experienced more prejudice and racism in Europe than America. (at least the ones who have actual been somewhere in Europe)

America still has areas of hard bigotry but most places are wildly diverse and accepting. The favored EU countries everyone holds up are so white and homogeneous it is comical.

This is not dunking on Europe or any specific country but comparing America to some Scandinavia country rich in oil is an apple to oj situation just like comparing America to China or Saudi would be.

rustystump··on JetBrains reported a net financial loss first time in its tracked history
But it IS a ton of complexity and blows out context windows. Less code good. More code bad. Both for human and agent. Somehow, still only human can make code less.
rustystump··on JetBrains reports revenue growth, net financial loss for 2025
Yes and….no. I have seen this play out at a large corp to spectacularly awful results. Talking 60k line react nextjs apps where every use effect has a linter silenced because the ai gave up on writing correct react code.

I have seen millions wasted because someone trusted an ai scripts calculation of a metric from the bottom of the org that led the top of the org to make a wrong decision only to laugh about ai. There is value but ffs read the god damn code. You can have the cake and eat it too. If the volume of code is so large you cannot read it, maybe it isnt worth shipping?

Or are you one of the ones pushing the real code reading on to others which seems to be common. Yes i can have agents vibe out 10 features and have my coworkers suffer fixing it in reviews.

What IS useful are the AI reviews. They catch bugs, not all are bugs but they do catch some. It is almost like they are better at finding logical issues across millions of tokens but not good at writing streamlined logic.

The number of times ai gives me a 800 line dif only to replace it with a 5 line dif after i read it and notice it grossly overcomplicated the ask and scoped in a bunch of nonsense from training data.

rustystump··on Anthropic reported diary entry to police, woman faces felony charge
Again, no. In your examples there is a real human there and not automated surveillance. There is a person who can be held accountable if they abuse that client confidentiality. Knowing big tech we will get a yt flock like automated system.

AI companies have no accountability as proven by the hugging face incident. And if they did, it would be the same old LLC non person taking ownership with a big slap on the wrist.

You are also wrong again that this literally is the gov surveying every message just like it is with them looking at your texts or google search. E2e encrypted messaging is hated because it cant be automatically surveyed. The idea it needs to be for law does not hold up as it doesnt for your human examples either.

I get the attempt here for nuance but still just, no.

People. Humans. We have got to have accountability. Once local llms are closer in capability to what people generally need and Apple has a local secure version of that, it is back to the e2e encryption and gov wanting backdoors arg again.

Almost all of these arguments boil back down to the “if you dont have anything to hide…” which id hope on hn we know is dangerous

rustystump··on Anthropic reported diary entry to police, woman faces felony charge
No. This sentiment is why Snowden happened. We want privacy. Privacy isnt free just like freedom (whatever form it is) isnt free.

There are trade offs. ISP effectively is like driving on a highway, everyone can see where you are going but not what is inside the car. Id like these AI chats to be the same but they are not.

rustystump··on Anthropic reported diary entry to police, woman faces felony charge
Absolutely no sympathy. Anthropic is every bit as slimy as any other big corp. And like other big corps, they must open the vault to whatever governments they intent to do biz with.
rustystump··on Once Claude can measure something, it can make it faster
The amount of complexity added for the gains is depressing. I am confident a human and about 5 minutes with chrome debugger would yield better results with a fraction of the complexity at a fraction if the cost and in a fraction of the claude baby sitting time.

Reading this shows the authors have a profound lack of fundamental understanding on how to effectively optimize in the web domain.

This isnt claude being bad but how wild it is watch people from the cutting edge of ai brag about pretty mediocre gains.

rustystump··on XCancel service is suspended until further notice
maybe my brian is memory holed but twitter used to not require an account which made the whole public square gov thing very valid even if u were banned for political reasons u could still read and be informed.

x requiring an account to even read content from gov officials has to be a massive insane deal breaker for anything gov official.

i hate x, not because of elon but because it is still just twitter where the format breeds the most disgusting human interactions possible. Everyone is performative in every interaction which leads to a net negative. Instragram and meta cannot even claim such a divisive crown although they win on other fronts.

No, bluesky is just yet another twitter with the same fundamental problem because the format is the issue not the politics. At least on bs i can generally read without logging in tho so it wins for me.

rustystump··on StarCraft returns in 2030 as an open-world shooter
RTS games are a niche now so this makes total sense. No one has time for them esp on competitive scene where the older games perfectly capture what audience exists.

Games these days need to have an almost hard cap on a “round” or session wrt to time. I need to know that the game will be over within x minutes’ish. The attention span is small. Almost all indie games have adopted this structure.

What fans really want is NOT another competitive rts but more campaigns and coop. Neither will convinced execs to dump cash into it unless it is a live service game with dlcs. Sc2 did this for a bit with a coop mode that did ok but not ok enough to continue.

rustystump··on StarCraft returns in 2030 as an open-world shooter
Unpopular opinion i am sure but i stopped playing Nintendo games years ago. All their main games are so derivative of their source mechanics that I get bored 10 minutes past the loading screen. At this point mariocart, mario world xxxi, zelda remake of a remake, they all feel like fifa or cod to me albeit far more polished.

Nintendo as a company is also extremely odious but that is a given of all companies these days so i give em a pass.

And, breath of the wild etc mechanics are almost all pulled directly from other open world games although they were a first for nintendo.

rustystump··on Making Startups Powerful
This is only true in America. American culture has become one where your worth as a person is based on money. If someone has alot of money, they must be better, smarter, etc, than everyone else who has less.

I dont think this holds as strongly in other countries. Other countries do not have the religious like worship of money that is the usa. Having a Phd is seen as higher status than making millions on legal scamming.

My Indian coworkers talk more about people in their country helping other than who is richest in India where the us folks talk about nothing but stonks and what car they will buy next.

rustystump··on Making Startups Powerful
A part that rubs people wrong is that they have no choice and competition doesnt exist outside the vc ecosystem. VC can subsidize a non profitable model for a decade often with an ipo that isnt profitable for another decade of net zero value creation. It isnt capitalism.

It is a pay to play game where if you are not in the club, you have little chance of playing let alone winning.

The cherry on top is the culture of cheating, lying, stealing, and all kinds of other “disruptive” tactics is actively encouraged and cheered on. This is while claiming to be altruistic too.

The public is growing a strong deep hatred of sv, whose only response seems to be calling everyone poor and laughing. It is sad, because I still think technology is a force for good.

rustystump··on ChatGPT Images 2.5
this is an oddly dismissive comment that says more about the commenter then what is commented on.

generating an ai image is vastly more costly than loading a webpage…but still not that costly compared to most other things.

this is depressing in the same way content slop or fyp feeds are fun.

if you want a silly pic with ur kids, just pay someone on fiver. it will be only slightly more expensive and likely far more exciting for kids as they have to wait for the dopamine hit.

rustystump··on Any Human Ever – One life, drawn at random from all who have ever lived
Idk I find it almost painful how obvious it is to the point of borderline embarrassment.

It is like when MUI/bootstrap/tailwind came out and made it increasingly easier for no design chop folks to press a button and get a decent design going. It is like watching a kid in a candy shop when systems engineers can vibe up a webapp without having to touch html/css/js.

rustystump··on Claude Fable 5.1 and Claude Mythos 5.1
i think people took this too literally.

To put it another way, comments are for irreducible complexity ir external systems outside your control.

I work between systems and app dev. Systems have comments more often esp in shaders but my god informing me that a variable named isActive is for if something is…active, is useless noise. Same with the majority of comments that a type system already tells you. In my career, these have been ~90% of the comments I see. Since ai, all new code it is 100%.

Most of the replies examples are a sign of bad system/code but it is not always controllable. A legacy code comment of, the api requires strings for boolean values in the form “yes” and “no”. That is useful but it is also a code smell.

A concrete example, a vendor decided to define a proto with a flattened array of objects so there are some 1800 uniquely named fields on it. In many downstream consumers, this is a real performance issue besides being confusing. A comment may be good there. The thing is, this was still solvable if up at the root of where this vendor’s hardware logs data remapped it to something sane so every downstream system wouldnt need a comment explaining wtf is going on.

I see comments as when you want to explicitly answer why code smells right when a reader is smelling it.

rustystump··on How accurate have Ed Zitron's AI skeptic predictions been?
Only recently came across this guy and if u ignore the standard social media hyper hype hype he has, I dont think he is wrong even his 2024 predictions.

US has 1.5x the money supply since Covid. This means everything has to go up 1.5x to reach the same parity from before. eg inflation. All corporate earnings are going to inflate as 1b yesterday is 1.5b today.

There is no whete for these mega corps to go. They dont know how to grow. meta becoming well meta with the vr crap is case and point. meta blowing billions on a few hyped AI people is the nail.

Other than cloud, microsft/google aimt doing anything. xbox? nope, hardware? nah. It is all attention economy or selling the pick axes for it.

the only mega corp that still seems to be moving the needle is apple which i think speaks volumes.

Eds point is that AI tam or expectations are insane full stop and he admits coding has a use just not as big of a tam. Gen ai in art, music, etc did not take off at all esp compared to code. this makes sense, no one pays an artist 500k/year. their time is worth little compared to coding.

Where he is wrong tho is that this is not new. there is always a hype cycle of nonsense that screws the little people. what is new is the level of polarization. it feels like ai psychosis right now in ways that remind me of crypto but worse because ai is actually useful so people are even more insufferable.

rustystump··on Claude Fable 5.1 and Claude Mythos 5.1
as others have pointed out, the reality is not this. id go further and say almost all comments are evil.

Excuse me if I am harsh, read the damn code. If you do not understand the language, that is a skill issue. If the code is confusing, then the code is bad and no amount of comments will ever change that. Professional engineering isnt an intro to databases class.

I am excusing language conventions which may have comments as part of its idiosyncratic nature.
