rwky··on A note on subscription prices from LWN
I'm happy to see such a positive response from the HN crowd! I'm not affiliated with lwn I'm just a subscriber. It looks like a few people have subscribed/renewed from this. I hope that helps lwn keep producing excellent content for years to come. They truly put an outstanding effort into their articles. It's one of the few sites I vist daily (HN also being on that list).

Also thanks to the editors and mods updating the title so people don't have to change their underwear.

rwky··on System Administrator Appreciation Day July 31, 2026 – 27th Annual
Happy Sysadmin day everyone! May you be showered with gifts and praise!
rwky··on I'm a USB-C Maximalist
I still prefer to buy things that use AA batteries than in built rechargeable ones. Li batteries are almost always the first thing to go.
rwky··on No leap second will be introduced at the end of June 2026
Me too! In my case postfix locked up and stopped sending mail there was a massive queue. I checked the logs and saw the same second twice and that's when I learned about leap seconds. Since then I have a reminder in my calendar every 6 months to check if ones been announced. Thankfully we've only had two.

rwky··on Ask HN: AWS/S3 Outage?
We're having issues connecting to the ECR registry and ubuntu apt repos (the ones hosted on AWS) for the past hour and a bit in eu-west-1
rwky··on Mistral releases Devstral2 and Mistral Vibe CLI
I gave it the job of modifying a fairly simple regex replacement and it took a while over 5 minutes, claude failed on the same prompt (which surprised me), codex did a similar job but faster. So all in all not bad!
rwky··on Voyager 1 is about to reach one light-day from Earth
Astronomers often have an error margin of an order of magnitude or two. 1 billion or 100 billion. Close enough either way!
rwky··on What Killed Perl?
I still use perl. It's my go to for string parsing (think pipe log file, do something with it and send it to stdout). It's also my go to for anything that I still want to work in 10 years.
rwky··on Cloudflare Global Network experiencing issues
A lot of business would accept the rare downtime from Cloudflare in exchange for the DDoS protection.

If the internet was always a nice place we wouldn't need Cloudflare and similar :(

rwky··on AWS multiple services outage in us-east-1
Feel sorry for anyone with a "smart" coffee machine.
rwky··on AWS multiple services outage in us-east-1
I was getting 500 errors a few hours ago on amazon.com
rwky··on AWS multiple services outage in us-east-1
Generally expect issues for the rest of the day, AWS will recover slowly, then anyone that relies on AWS will recovery slowly. All the background jobs which are stuck will need processing.
rwky··on AWS multiple services outage in us-east-1
Back in the day people used to shut down mail servers at the weekend, maybe we should start doing that again.
rwky··on AWS multiple services outage in us-east-1
Hah good point, pagerduty is working at least.
rwky··on AWS multiple services outage in us-east-1
To everyone that got paged (like me), grab a coffee and ride it out, the week can only get better!
rwky··on test-ipv6.com will stay online
Not just ISPs github and npm still don't and AWS is iffy too.

rwky··on Strengthening NPM: Important changes to authentication and token management
The disabling of TOTP is going to make things interesting, I wonder how prevalent pass keys are now? Especially for Linux users?
rwky··on Discord says 70k users may have had their government IDs leaked in breach
Same. I automatically assume that all information I send to any organisation will end up on the Internet sooner or later be it by accident or sold to some shady third party.
rwky··on Become unbannable from your email
Same thing happened to me over 20 years ago back then it was common to get domain hosting email all from one provider. They hiked up the price to something extortionate and changed the owner details on the domain to themselves cost me a fair penny to get that back from then on I kept my domain email and hosting all separate and stuck with what are hopefully more reputable providers. And of course these days if it happened I'd go straight to legal action something that young me didn't think of.
rwky··on Why I chose Lua for this blog
I use perl for the same reasons. The few dynamic scripts that I need I want to write and forget them for years. Odds are with perl they'll still work 20 years from now.
rwky··on Apple Photos app corrupts images
I'm fond of digikam https://www.digikam.org/ it's simple enough for most users and has complex features for more advanced users its open source cross platform and doesn't do some weird rearranging of files so you can still use your file browser too.
rwky··on No Hello
"Alexa add peanut butter to shopping list".

"It's currently raining would you like to see the forecast for tomorrow also I found this routine you might like would you like me to enable it"

writes peanut butter on a piece of paper

rwky··on Ghost students are creating problems for California colleges
When I did my degree many moons ago in three UK I got a student loan like many people. The loan company sends the money directly to the university not the student. Weirdly though when I did my masters they sent the money to me.
rwky··on I gave up on self-hosted Sentry (2024)
I use both hosted and self hosted sentry. I prefer hosted it's less to manage but self hosted isn't too awful as long as you can budget the resources. If you just want the team sentry plan it's going to be cheaper to use hosted. I would only self host if you had to for legal/compliance reasons. In the many years I've been managing sentry we've only had it truly crap out once and that was an upgrade from 9 to their new date versioning basically the whole hosted method changed and it was just easier to start over from scratch.
rwky··on How many supernova explode every year?
This reminds me of a few years ago when I was doing my MSc our group was learning how to work one of the remote telescopes and we were asked to point it at the brightest object found by Gaia that week and it turned out to be a supernova. Very cool for your first observation using a remote telescope! If anyone wants to see it here it is https://ibb.co/Kzqbfq30

And here is the Gaia data http://gsaweb.ast.cam.ac.uk/alerts/alert/Gaia23bqb/
