ryangallen··on Amazon announces candidate cities for HQ2
I'm already not disappointed that we didn't get Amazon's HQ but I'm still disappointed about the Regional Transit vote. Luckily it might be on the ballot again in 2018.

ryangallen··on Warren Buffett and Dan Gilbert Unite in Bid to Acquire Yahoo
Which has pretty much been banished to the roof http://www.crainscleveland.com/article/20151106/NEWS/1511097...
ryangallen··on Sebastian Thrun Has Left His Role as Google VP and Fellow
Udacity has done what any good start-up should and launched a solid MVP and iterated on it, delivering free, in-demand courses in a short amount of time. No, the materials and scripts have not always perfect but they are still more valuable than many college courses I've taken. If he is in fact leaving to focus energy on Udacity, isn't that a positive move in regards to your critiques?
ryangallen··on Django UI in 2005 vs. Django UI in 2014
Just updating the admin header styling would be sufficient. That yellow h1 a has got to go. https://github.com/django/django/blob/master/django/contrib/...
ryangallen··on Syntax highlighters are wrong
Colors are certainly a significant part of user experience, so although I agree that these issues exist, I disagree with the solutions.

Comments shouldn't be pink/red because they are not necessarily a bad thing. Just make them bold and opaque.

Changing to blue and yellow for diffs is equally as wrong as red/green but more confusing. Blue signifies safe information and yellow signifies warning. It would be better to use the same color for deletions and additions but make deletions darker to show they are stale/rotted and additions brighter to show freshness.

ryangallen··on Unpythonic Python
Programming language accents.
ryangallen··on Show HN: A sequence of online courses to learn web development from scratch
I would also mix in Jeffrey Way's tuts for HTML, CSS, and jQuery. (They say 30 days but you can do them each in less than a week.)

ryangallen··on I’m Thinking. Please. Be Quiet.
I'm sitting here (Detroit suburbs) trying to read this article while the lawn service is outside cutting, trimming, and blowing. Recently I've been looking at houses closer to the city, but considering northern Canada at this point.
ryangallen··on Poll: Do you select text while reading?
To mark my place when scrolling.
ryangallen··on YC Rejection Emails Are Out
It was fun anyways. Applying really lit a fire under my ass. Since September, I learned a ton about web development and starting a business.
ryangallen··on Ike the CSS3 / HTML5 Robot
The panic button reminds me of Gary from Team America... "It's me! It's me!"
ryangallen··on Please, Just Put The Phone Down And Drive
Right there with you, I think about this everyday I drive to and from work. It is absolutely insane to have millions of people "in control" of their cars. Where do I sign up?
ryangallen··on Ford Nucleon - a nuclear-powered concept car from 1958
As a former Ford test driver, I can tell you they are no longer going in this direction.
ryangallen··on How to Become an Entrepreneur in 5 Easy Steps
Should be raking in that billion dollars any minute now.
ryangallen··on Poll: Should we push the YC deadline back by a day because of the storm?
It really says something then, that 80% of the vote is still Yes.
ryangallen··on Show HN: Bubbles - my unfinished HTML5 Particle Game
Can you make it work on mobile with controls on the page?
ryangallen··on Python is doing just fine
Also, it's worth mentioning that Udacity and CodeAcademy are teaching Python to thousands of new programmers.
ryangallen··on Andrew McAfee: Are droids taking our jobs?
I really like the idea that with less day to day work to be done, people will be able to work on helping pull third-world countries forward. I just see first-world society having a real hard time letting go of the 40 hour/week, "earn your living" job. And how do we feed and house people without an income? Maybe the droid building companies (Google, Apple, IBM, etc) can/should fund these philanthropic movements.
ryangallen··on America's Problem: The World is Beating Us in a Battle We Don't Want to Win
I agree, there has to be a balance in any work atmosphere. I just think individuals with ideas for improving a company should not be resisted, but valued and encouraged to share their thoughts. In my opinion, a good business should be thought of as a team of professionals operating harmoniously, not a monarchial society where leadership makes the decisions for everyone and there is a constant 'climb the ladder to the top' philosophy. I suppose it's essentially a debate of forms of government.
ryangallen··on America's Problem: The World is Beating Us in a Battle We Don't Want to Win
"We are moving into a future where entrepreneurial minded people will be the only kind of worker that have Real Value."

I certainly hope so. It is so excruciatingly frustrating to go to a job everyday where that trait is inhibited by a 'just do your job and shut up' environment.

ryangallen··on Xkcd "Click and Drag" in a "map" interface
Felt like the first day I got my ant farm when I was a kid. :)
ryangallen··on The Single Pinterest Pin That Launched a Company
Some very interesting chunks of information there considering my application for YC W13 is for a 'local' idea. Picked out some things I'll be sure to think about as I'm building the beta. Thanks!
ryangallen··on The Single Pinterest Pin That Launched a Company
I love how the internet gets shit done.

Social marketing can be so explosive for unique small businesses. That company never would have gotten that kind of exposure before the web.

ryangallen··on Want to learn Django? Start here.
Thank you, I will definitely check it out.

How is it in comparison to WP?

ryangallen··on Ask WTF: Learning The Business
"it's all about finding balance"

I was thinking that the whole time I was reading. You can only eat knowledge as fast as you can chew it. Digestion takes time too.

ryangallen··on Learn to code, get a job.
As someone who has completed most of the Treehouse badges, I can tell you it is worth your time for learning front end dev.

Here's some front end design work I did with what I learned in a couple months - slatetechnologies.com . I was pretty happy that I could build a tablet out of straight HTML/CSS.
