Unfortunately the court system is such that it would collapse under the load if everyone actually exercised their right to a trial which heavily incentivizes plea deals

ryoshoe··on Maybe There Was an Egg Cartel After All
Yet despite that many residents in the wealthiest nations report increasing levels of unhappiness with the state of things. While there are other factors that play into this, it doesn't seem that wealth generation itself is a direct vehicle to the things people value / make them happy
ryoshoe··on Trump administration is suspending Microsoft from a green card program
There's no conflict. They can be comparable to anyone else on their team while being better than the average American developer.
ryoshoe··on What happened to the Snowden archive
We should because the time between being acused and when a case is actually tried is undeniably a factor in why plea deals are taken. When the alternative to taking a plea deal is potentially spending months in jail until one's case goes to trail is accepting a plea deal which comes with a definite and possibly shorter sentence than the waiting period for a trial itself it isn't surprising that people would simply accept the plea deal

Maybe this could even work better for non-chronological movies like Memento
ryoshoe··on Why it might be time to rethink the human family tree
I feel like you're conflating race/ethnicity with species when the two are completely separate concepts. There's a great amount of diversity between dog breeds, including wolves, but little disagreement that they are the same species. Variation between members of a certain species is expected
ryoshoe··on It's not a fear of "AI communism"; it's a fear of competitive market capitalism

Can an insect feel pain? What about a mushroom, or a plant? What things are conscious enough to feel pain? I'm genuinely asking because I because it seems arbitrary as to where the line gets drawn. Before the 1980s it was the medical consensus that babies weren't capable of feeling pain even though this is now widely recognized as untrue.
ryoshoe··on Mozilla and Adafruit Bring Web Serial Workflows to Firefox
I read the title and initially assumed this was about web serials[1] in the sense of serialized fiction posted to the internet.

ryoshoe··on When Rails-way does not work anymore?
The thing that's changed is how time is no longer major limiting factor. Previously Jill would have had to learn enough about programming to make an app, whereas now she can write a few prompts and receive something good enough even if her lack of programming knowledge means the code is house-of-cards waiting to fall
ryoshoe··on Mullvad exit IPs are surprisingly identifying
I found these references to Mullvad and TeamPCP

>The whole operation ran primarily from Mullvad VPN exit nodes and virtual private server infrastructure, with little effort made to blend in. This was a high-tempo, low-stealth campaign designed to extract as much value as possible, as fast as possible.[1]

>Wiz CIRT observed the bulk of TeamPCP’s activity originating from Mullvad Virtual Private Network (VPN) exit nodes and virtual private server hosts such as InterServer.[2]

The constitution isn't static. Amendments can be repealed. An elected government could appoint judges to overturn any previous precedents
ryoshoe··on The Disappearance of the Public Bench
At the core of this is that your friend came to the realization that he wanted to change his life. He can credit his time in jail for this. However that doesn't mean it will be the same for everyone, or that there's only a single potential trigger to get someone to recover from drug addiction
ryoshoe··on As U.S. Debt Hits a Worrying Milestone, Washington Barely Notices
Part of what I think they were getting at is that suburban living is usually a long term burden on state budgets because the lower density means that maintenance costs aren't fully covered by tax revenue. If people want to live in these communities they should be expected to cover the costs, but since the necessary tax increases aren't popular they never get passed and the budget becomes unbalanced

They're right. We've found remains that show how thousands of years ago people took care of people that would have died without external assistance.

Just doing nothing isn't great for the "human spirit", but UBI doesn't mean people can't find their own goals to pursue. The idea of something where people are not longer required to work to survive is hard to accept since many people haven't seriously considered how they could meaning outside of their careers
