s_dev··on Why Sweden is abandoning its cashless society
125 countries say it has power.
s_dev··on Americans' social activity has steeply declined in the past 30 years
A pub must serve drink. It doesn't need to serve food.

In Ireland that distinction matters. It generally will affect other things, like what time and how loud music will be played, how the tables and chairs will be organised and what type. It will often affect opening hours and the price of a pint. Gastro pubs also tend to be much larger.

In North America it seems the vast majority of "pubs" are gastro pubs, possibly why that lady couldn't see the difference. I personally love micropubs and they never serve food other than crisps and maybe a toastie.

I feel like a pedant but I get that dude in his 20s and had to speak up.

s_dev··on Banks are now trying to offload the AI data center debt they just underwrote

s_dev··on CPI-U rises 7.2% annualized in September (3.7% YoY)
There is a finite amount of money.

If you bomb your capacity to produce oil and consumers must pay more for oil that money comes from elsewhere i.e less video games. That is simply a price increase not inflation. It would like confusing the weather and climate. Inflation is defined as the "general increase in prices".

If you add money to the existing finite amount of money you get inflation.

s_dev··on CPI-U rises 7.2% annualized in September (3.7% YoY)
Inflation comes from the monetary supply not government spending. If you want lower inflation, you increase interest rates to discourage loans and mortgages.
s_dev··on Amazon pushes up prices across the Internet
Amazon isn't the only place to buy things. There are millions of other retailers both online and offline.
s_dev··on Why Sweden is abandoning its cashless society
>The ICC is just a made up organization

All organisations are made up.

s_dev··on Why Sweden is abandoning its cashless society
Isn't that what happened with International Criminal Court judge who dared to oppose Israel?
s_dev··on Show HN: The rarest tech books and docs you've probably never read
Isn't the definition of a classic book one that everyone wants to read but doesn't.
s_dev··on The RAM shortage is bringing back DDR4
Can you elaborate? I have a M4 Max with 128 GB RAM that I bought in 2024 with AppleCare+ (€500) for €7k. I estimate I would get €4k to €5k if I sold it second hand today. So it hasn't appreciated in value in any meaningful sense but it has very slowly depreciated in value. Normally a 2 year old laptop would strictly lose at least 50% of it's value.
s_dev··on Anthropic discloses 2 months old fake tip to police among new rogue AI incidents
Legally this is the same as having a dog that bites someone. You hold the owner/guardian responsible, in this case it's either the subscriber or Anthropic. You don't start making arguments about how nonsensical it is to fine a dog or put it in jail.

s_dev··on Show HN: The rarest tech books and docs you've probably never read
'Rarely read' might be a better expression rather than rare. At least compared to 'Cracking the Coding Interview', 'Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs' etc.
s_dev··on YouTuber Says Cops Visited Him After He Built a Flock-Style Camera to Track Cops
It should be mentioned that Flock is a YC company.

I like Dan G, Paul G, Gary T and all the lads but this is a fuck up. YC are supposed to be disruptive not borderline Stasi.

s_dev··on OpenAI fires three safety researchers for "mishandling research information"
Leopold Aschenbrenner said the exact same thing after he was fired from OpenAI. It's a great excuse to explain a sudden loss of employment to others so you're still employable.

It's probably the case they are all lying to some extent including OpenAI. Determining the truth is always tricky. Hard to pass judgement here when it's all just he said vs she said.

s_dev··on The value of not getting to the point (2015)
There are these two young fish swimming along and they happen to meet an older fish swimming the other way, who nods at them and says “Morning, boys. How’s the water?” And the two young fish swim on for a bit, and then eventually one of them looks over at the other and goes “What the hell is water?”

s_dev··on Why were Victorian elites so effective?
>What keeps the guards from taking all the profit?

This does happen but yes obviously attempts are made to prevent it, the guards my not be familiar with the journey, other guards may be family members or trusted friends. Often then the guards become the Merchant then.

You see this with the billionaires building luxury apocalypse bunkers in New Zealand and other exotic locales that are like mini theme parks. It slowly dawns on them that when society breaks down that's exactly what it means. You can't depend on normal social norms or laws anymore, how do you stop your security team from kicking you out of your own bunker, how you do you charter a flight to your bunker? It's a problem with no guaranteed solution.

Prepping is different as it doesn't involve depending on others. Just yourself and your preparations.

s_dev··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (October 2026)
A Jellyfin Plugin: https://xn--teilifssen-04a4l.ie/

Will make your Jellyfin go from a Netflix style presentation to an old school TV channel surfing mode in the click of a button and back again.

It makes Jellyfin way more fun than Netflix as it removes complicated decisions from deciding what to watch. When you're not sure you click the Teilifís Seán button.

s_dev··on EU Floats Canada Becoming the Bloc's First 'Associate Member'
French Guiana is a fully integrated member of the European Union and is in South America.
s_dev··on Australia 'on the same page' as Canada as it seeks deeper EU alliance
You might have missed this bit:

>Even if Canada and Australia don't join the EU as full members which is unlikely anyway

And like I point out, deeper ties are definitely on the table which is more like what will happen. The world is reorganising around US tariffs as a natural economic reaction here.

s_dev··on Australia 'on the same page' as Canada as it seeks deeper EU alliance
You might have missed this bit:

>deeper ties are definitely on the table though

s_dev··on Australia 'on the same page' as Canada as it seeks deeper EU alliance
For me the most striking thing about this was before the Brexit referendum there was rhetoric about how the UK would form a CANZUK alliance with free movement of people and goods between these countries, forming a sort of English speaking EU.

Even if Canada and Australia don't join the EU as full members which is unlikely anyway (deeper ties are definitely on the table though), these sort of announcements should put to bed these complete and utter fantasies the UK has about leading some alternative world order where it's in charge and can go toe to toe with the EU.

https://www.ippr.org/articles/could-the-idea-of-the-anglosph...

Even many British would agree that Brexit was full of absolute lies, and even to this day you still see them being repeated in certain circles. These weren't even possibilities.

s_dev··on Pion, an agent designed to run any company autonomously
pg would argue Starbucks the Umbrella group is startup as it's an franchise operation focussed on growth. A single instance of Starbucks is a business focussed on turning a profit.

In fact even the name YC is YCombinator, which in programming is a "function that produces functions" and YC is supposed to be a startup that produces startups. Here Starbucks (Umbrella) is a startup that produces coffee shops (Starbucks).

You can define startup or business however you like it's not a legally protected term. Just around these parts that's what it means and I personally find the distinction useful when reasoning about what does and doesn't have high growth potential.

s_dev··on Pion, an agent designed to run any company autonomously
A startup and a business aren't the same thing in the eyes of YC.

https://www.paulgraham.com/growth.html

A business is web store selling coffee cups where the bottom line governs it's continuation. A startup is ambitious project where a growth rate governs it's continuation.

The end result of a business is a lemonade stand or a barber or donut shop, the end result of a startup is OpenAI or Google.

s_dev··on OpenAI agents carried out an undisclosed attack on RubyGems
Because it's treated as a strategic asset now. AI capital spendign 1/3 of US GDP growth last quarter take it out and the economy is stalled. Nobody in DC is going to prosecute the only thing making the number go up.
