salmonet··on Salesforce will hire no more software engineers in 2025, says Marc Benioff
I'm old enough to remember when Dreamforce was "The Largest Internet of Things Conference".
salmonet··on Meta Movie Gen
This is Hacker News. That comment was way more positive than I expected for something like this and so I assumed this must be pretty awesome
salmonet··on Tesla engineers were on-site to evaluate the Twitter staff’s code, workers said
I am surprised this is the top comment. Yes, I am sure they have done the paperwork for these "tons of thousands of dollars." I think it is unlikely that many shareholders are concerned about this exercise
salmonet··on Cryptocurrency scams cost owners $7.7B in 2021, driven by DeFi-based “rug pulls”
How much have cryptocurrency non-scams earned owners in 2021?
salmonet··on Ask HN: Which HN account do you think is Paul Graham's burner account?
It just seems like someone here would be able to figure it out somehow.
salmonet··on Show HN: Books Paul Graham recommended on Twitter
Thanks for this, great list and PGs context is great to have next to the recommendations. The PG glamour shot may have been what made it come off like you were idolizing him
salmonet··on How to brainstorm great business ideas
And sometimes ideas for "problems people don't know they have" are not good. I would guess this is more common.
salmonet··on YouTube videos that have almost zero previous views
This was surprisingly satisfying to watch. Thanks for doing this
salmonet··on Ask HN: What are your “brain hacks” that help you manage everyday situations?
With important decisions, I flip a coin. Then choose the decision I find myself hoping the coin lands on
salmonet··on Pigeon as a Service – Send Messages by Carrier Pigeon
Someday we will look back and laugh that we had to use pigeons to send letters
salmonet··on Why Can’t Americans Get a Raise?
For whatever reason, maximizing profits and minimizing expenditures is a popular trend among many successful companies
salmonet··on The Gender Pay Gap Is Largely Because of Motherhood
Well yeah, obviously. It surprises me that an idea as basic as this is newsworthy. Could someone please fill me in on what people thought was playing a larger role than this?
salmonet··on Aspirin May Prevent Cancer from Spreading, New Research Shows
I would go out on a limb and say it's a LOT of Asprin. I usually use "surprising" on HN because anything more specific gets criticized surprisingly often, but that is a ton of asprin
salmonet··on Soylent Closes $50M Series B Round Led by GV
I guess it depends how you use it. I keep it in my car as a replacement for fast food when I'm short on time and I'm healthier overall
salmonet··on Amazon peer-to-peer selling
Agreed. I also think such a spinoff would do well against ebay. I tried using paypal/ebay yesterday and gave up after 3 hours of trying to get a payment to go through. It was like going back in time to the 90s
salmonet··on Why Aren’t There More Asian Americans in Leadership Positions?
Agreed. Anecdotally, uncharismatic, feminine pushovers seem to be less effective in leadership positions.
salmonet··on Tell HN: Political Detox Week – No politics on HN for one week
A complete blackout of anything the political community decides is important is strange. I understand the danger of political flame wars, but interesting issues will often become politicized. Climate change and privacy have obviously become political, but that doesn't make those topics less interesting intellectually.

edit: grammer

salmonet··on My Unhappy Life as a Climate Heretic
Even if opposing viewpoints are likely incorrect, there is some risk to omitting sections of the climate change discussion. There are many "things you can't say" about climate change.
salmonet··on The Psychological Dispositions of Self-Identified Libertarians
Political threads are mostly bad when people use it as an outlet to complain and add nothing relevant to the discussion. This article is relevant since there is likely a disproportionate representation of Libertarians on HN
salmonet··on Facebook is 1-2% responsible for the election?
Another difficult problem is that people can create very strong opinions about things faster than they can gather all of the relevant information, even if the media does do a good job. The black lives matter movement made "hands up don't shoot" their rally cry and stayed with it even after we found out later that narrative wasn't true.
salmonet··on Diamonds Suck (2006)
I would go with CZ. Interestingly there is an inverse correlation between wedding ring cost and likelihood of staying together.

salmonet··on Diamonds Suck (2006)
I don't remember the source, but apparently there is an inverse correlation between expense of wedding ring and a couple's likelihood of stay together
salmonet··on Amazon sells out of the NES Classic Edition in less than a minute
Nintendo deserves some of the blame. They most likely created this shortage on purpose to create press.
salmonet··on Trump’s sweep could be a big setback to Tesla and Elon Musk
Not me. A Tesla is my dream car for the performance, style, and technology. The environmental impact has nothing to do with it.
salmonet··on Scouts and guides provide ‘mental health boost for life’
That's true, but that study will probably never happen. You can expect that to be one of the top comments on any article like this on HN. It's a speed vs. accuracy problem though. The correlation between global temperatures and human CO2 emissions doesn't mean causation, but that doesn't necessarily mean it isn't useful info paired with common sense.
salmonet··on Dear Microsoft
Wait did they actually put a big print ad in the New York Times? I hope for Slack's sake this is a joke/meme
salmonet··on Dear Microsoft [from Slack]
I'm not entirely sure what the point of the release is, it also feels sort of passive aggressive to me
salmonet··on 16-year-old British girl earns £48,000 helping Chinese people name their babies
Worst I've ever heard is "Placenta." It actually does sound like a really beautiful name, but to a typical native English speaker it is weird.
salmonet··on Facebook is wrong, text is deathless
Videos can be made to be extremely entertaining and take very little effort to consume. It makes sense that video will be increasingly important for Facebook.
salmonet··on Buffer Layoffs
>In the American business world, you are an employee until you aren't. Confusing being an employee with being "family" is a mistake, both for the company and the employee.

I would say this is just a common philosophy for successful businesses. A happy family is a wonderful unit, but that happiness depends on giving preferential treatment to the least rational people. Which is a bad business philosophy.
