samhamilton··on Clubhouse announces new collaboration tool, free project management platform
Personally also hate the let’s charge extra for SSO but at least with Clubhouse I can login with Google (G Suite account) and use the free product, as that’s what I just did a couple of hours ago to kick the tires.

Means they will hide the same stuff Bing has and will hide more stuff as and when the gov tells them to. You want to be inside the firewall you need to be “legal”

samhamilton··on First Impressions – Google Cloud SQL for PostgreSQL
Not sure if the author is limited by his trial account but to get more than 6.5GB of memory you need to dial up the number of cores which then gives you up to 64 cores and 416 GB memory
samhamilton··on Lessons We’ve Learned Using AWS (2010)
I believe wix.com does this, a mix of AWS and Google Cloud. Can't find the blog post where they listed out how they achieved it

samhamilton··on IPv6 Support for AWS Extended to 15 Regions
Yep - thats what we rolled out for our iOS app, CloudFlare IPv4/6 + AWS just IPv4
samhamilton··on How Stack Overflow plans to survive the next DNS attack
+1 - I am also very interested why they chose to switch out from CloudFlare for both their DNS and their CDN and over to Fastly. Nick Craver did a write up where they specifically mentioned [1] Cloudflare for both their DNS and CDN.

Do you think after the Dyn outage everyones sysadmins are running round adding redundancy, too worried to trust the uptime of their site in the hands of just CloudFlare?

samhamilton··on First China-U.K. Freight Train Departs as Xi Seeks to Lift Trade
I would guess that this is rolling out just for the PR, the sheer number of trains needed to replace one decent sized container ship just makes this all prohibitive to ever replace much sea freight plus launching when there is a glut of container ships floating around as well, which is keeping the price lower than most ship owners can breakeven. Ok so it's quicker, but it's not that quick.

The only winners would be the goods owners who are winning form short term lower prices - is that enough for a long term business?

samhamilton··on Why the Elixir language has great potential
Which package are you using for deployments?
samhamilton··on My fight against CDN libraries
I feel your pain, when building my sites and if I use a 3rd party js/css cdn I use the only one I have found that has ICP and a damn good list of western nodes - jsdelivr.com
samhamilton··on My fight against CDN libraries
Yep social logins do break or make pages very very slow to load. (Expat in Shanghai)
samhamilton··on Linode Manager and API are under attack
Yes for sure, think about what Google etc had as teams before they all launched their cloud compute services, I would bet they all had abuse mitigation teams. In this case I would figure there is an overlap of the team and tooling that keeps google.com up and the one that keeps my VM being hosed by a DDoS
samhamilton··on All of Google's cloud database services are now out of beta
Yep - currently rolling my own on GCE but would really love them to roll out managed service to handle failover. Hopefully now that their v2 has gone GA it releases someone to work on adding new db types.
samhamilton··on All of Google's cloud database services are now out of beta
Dear Google, pretty please add some Postgres support
samhamilton··on Ask HN: How do you monitor uptime?
Used to use Pingdom but currently trying out NewRelic Synthetics
samhamilton··on Ask HN: Is StartSSL worth the $0 price tag?
We used them to secure internal only apps we ran, to stop staff getting used to ignoring the warning pages if the certs are self-signed. Yer ok the signup process is a pain but we had an amazing system admin who knew their stuff so got up and running in no time.
samhamilton··on CDN for JavaScript libraries
I am in Shanghai and CloudFlare seems to suffer from rolling blocks mostly against SSL content. We notice as we have a ecommerce site behind their service, our customer are in the EU so no bother really just a pain sometime to get their orders out... connections to Google in almost all forms is basically dead now. Weirdly I don't remember HackerNews getting blocked and thats on CF too???
samhamilton··on HN blocked in China
It's CloudFlare the firewall seems to be blocking sometimes, I am in Shanghai and HN comes and goes at random. Plus I notice the same thing on other CF sites. China is a pain for almost all CDNs
samhamilton··on After NSA's XKeyscore, Wikipedia Switches to HTTPS
