samier-trellis··on Trump wins presidency for second time
I don't think third parties even really try to organize and do the boring work of proving themselves in local/state office.

They are just spoilers; you don't see the Libertarians or Greens saying "you know what, forget the presidency, obviously we aren't going to win--let's field candidates for like mayor, city council, DA, state legislature, etc. in really swingy/purple districts and show people what we can do"

samier-trellis··on Facebook building subsea cable that will encompass the world
Don't some big hedge funds/finance players also have such cables?
samier-trellis··on Cats – A simple alternative to APRS and telemetry systems
God damn it, I clicked it as soon as I saw "cats", but it has nothing to do with cats :|

If it's just you, then that reason alone justifies it.

samier-trellis··on Ask HN: Platform for 11 year old to create video games?
Scratch
samier-trellis··on Microsoft TypeSpec
Came here to post this. We use Django Ninja at work (basically FastAPI style endpoints for Django), and it automatically does OpenAPI and Swagger docs for us. Whatever web framework one chooses in whichver language should def have this built-in by now, IMO, seems like tablestakes for anything larger than a "micro-framework"
samier-trellis··on Show HN: Frosti – Access Management Copilot
Def interested in something that solves this problem; def not interested in logging in just to try it.

samier-trellis··on Can LA end its love affair with cars?
I certainly agree with your first sentence (though I wish it was densifying and building subway more aggressively), but taking the bus in LA sounds awful, and I am not sure how you are defining "obstacle" and "comfort" here: "it's a very long walk (15 miles!) but it's a fairly comfortable walk where you won't encounter any difficult obstacles unlike the average American city."

Nobody should make that walk, IRL lol

samier-trellis··on Ask HN: Do you feel comfortable promising tips to language models?
Some paper showed that it increased LLM performance lol
samier-trellis··on Ask HN: How do you define MLOps, and why is it trending?
It's not about LLMs, it's about deploying, training, data management/pipelines, etc., for normal ML models.
samier-trellis··on Code Smarter, Not Harder: Developing with Cursor and Claude Sonnet
To be clear, the main advantages over GitHub Copilot are ability to add other files as context and being able to have multiple chats going, right?
samier-trellis··on Ask HN: Would you use (or recommend) Windows as a developer laptop?
Yes, Windows with WSL2 is a perfectly good development machine. I use a Mac for work, Windows for personal. I prefer the Mac, but I'm not sure it's worth a price difference of over $1k between a Mac and Windows with comparable specs.
samier-trellis··on Ask HN: Caught in a platform rewrite civil war, what to expect?

samier-trellis··on Ask HN: How come there is no one recommended way to setup Python environment?
My bet is that within the next year, people will coalesce around uv.

The post also specified the hair color
samier-trellis··on LangChain Is a Black Box
It is indeed a terrible library on multiple levels. Get rid of it. Just use the "native" Python SDK for the LLMs you are using for your POC.
samier-trellis··on OpenAI co-founder John Schulman says he will leave and join rival Anthropic
Oh interesting, will give it another go, thnx

How are you liking cursor? I tried it ~a year ago, and it was quite a bit worse than ferrying back and forth between ChatGPT and VSCode.

Is it better than using GitHub Copilot in VSCode?

samier-trellis··on Ask HN: What are some of the best designed products in the past few years?
Not as good as on Mac. It doesn't seem to have the same scope of settings configurable, and there are a few UI differences that seem unnecessary and marginally worse, such as putting the URL and "Site Control Center" thingy on top instead of with the left panel, as on Mac.

I still recommend though, fwiw.

samier-trellis··on Ask HN: Are lawyers with SWE backgrounds useful?
> Maybe working implementing tax law related software?

Most people wouldn't find this to involve interesting problems, but to each their own lol

Check out the Freelaw Project, they operate a couple open source things with which you can get involved. I have been a contributor there myself. Can invite you to the Slack if you find it interesting

samier-trellis··on Ask HN: Are lawyers with SWE backgrounds useful?
Ha

I was a dev for a few years, went to law school, worked in law for a bit, and have now switched back to being a software engineer (thank God).

And I am not the only person I know with backgrounds in both--there are dozens of us!

Feel free to reach out to me if you'd like to chat. samier_saeed@protonmail.com

samier-trellis··on Show HN: Symbols > We are building Figma for developers
I am interesting in trying this, but I find your entire sign up process/schtick incredibly obnoxious. I would literally rather pay to try this than refer this to anyone (esp since I haven't tried it); I hate the assumption that anyone looking at your landing page has a Twitter account; and I find it opaque.
samier-trellis··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (June 2024)
Thanks for reaching out. Can you please apply at the link? I will ping you on Linkedin so that you can send me your resume there.
samier-trellis··on Ask HN: Who wants to be hired? (June 2024)
I would suggest removing the line about Algolia's toxic workplace from your CV; does not send a good signal.
samier-trellis··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (June 2024)
Trellis -- AI/ML Engineer | Remote (both US and international) | trellis.law

We are looking for a senior/staff engineer who has experience building search systems to join our data science and machine learning team. The kinds of things we envision this hire doing:

* Leading and guiding other engineers in development of RAG/semantic search pipelines.

* Leading development of an engine that takes legal questions and parses them for intent, keywords, etc.

* Leading development of a suite of LLM-based tools and the development of ML systems to evaluate them.

* And more!

Please apply here: https://jobs.lever.co/trellis/b76fa20e-8bf4-4d6e-a716-200f36... (you can mostly ignore the job description there, it needs updating/refinement)

Tech stack: Python/Django; AWS; Postgres; Elasticsearch; Redis

About Trellis: Trellis is one of the only modern, searchable, and aggregated sources of state trial court filings around, and we are actively expanding to include Federal court dockets as well. If you have never before tried to search state court dockets, you probably aren't aware of how difficult it is to find what has been filed in public court cases. Trellis is filling the gap and modernizing the space. Our customers range from solo practitioners to some of the largest and most prestigious law firms in the country.

I am happy to answer any questions here, or via Discord DM (ss1515)

If your experience is on-point, I'd be happy to forward your CV to the hiring manager directly.

samier-trellis··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (April 2024)
I honestly don't know, I am just a mid-level who wanted to post the job application here to make sure it is seen by the Hacker News crowd. If it were up to me, a salary range would be included in the job posting.
