sammy0910··on I posted to HN, and then my website was flooded with AI bot traffic
if you do decide to give it a try, and are coming from vim, i've had a good experience with https://github.com/emacsorphanage/god-mode as a way to kind of bridge the gap into modal editing

> So you got hammered by curl requests! But isn't that part of your delivery static anyway? Were you regenerating the same HTML over and over?

i dont think this was the cause of the slowdown, it was just sort of the thing that led to the discovery that this was mostly bots.

in general, because the purpose of the website is to allow users to generate news feeds based on custom criteria, it does do a bit of meaningful work on each request (ones that do follow through and load the full page).

> How many was it? > Also interesting that it was a single "user". (user-agent?) Did it come from a different IP every time?

I'm intentionally leaving some of the details vague here, both because I don't want to be too harsh on the original author (it may have just been accidental/a buggy program/etc.), and because I don't want the traffic generators to know how im flagging them.

yeah, it was a wake-up call that I needed to make certain parts of my application faster, and I've been working on it for the past few weeks
sammy0910··on I posted to HN, and then my website was flooded with AI bot traffic
not yet, but I think something like this would be a next step
sammy0910··on I posted to HN, and then my website was flooded with AI bot traffic
I think I could improve the format a bit with something like Jekyll, but I haven't had a good chunk of time to sit down and work on it

sammy0910··on Tell HN: HN has lost the joy for me
yeah, ... I can't say that I love certain aspects of this era we're all living in

despite everything, I think there are people out there who care a lot, and who are doing good work, and I'm hopeful that if we care enough we can sort of redirect this wave into something good for the world

There’s this post from a few weeks ago, if you just wanna filter out all the AI content

sammy0910··on Why Common Lisp is now the best programming language
as a lisp enjoyer i also recommend clojure! a phenomenal little language

running live w/ability to set custom tags if you're interested

sammy0910··on Hacker News with reduced priority for AI driven content
this website reduces the priority of content, rather than filter it entirely, so some articles with high score will still appear, but lower down than they otherwise would.

This is configurable though, so you can make it whatever you want.

see below for a complete demo (view on desktop): https://sprinklz.io/demo/hackerNews

as well as another example I've exported from above with stronger penalty: https://sprinklz.io/public/5vsn97zcgxex

you can also visit the main homepage at https://sprinklz.io if you want to build/save/export arbitrary feeds

sammy0910··on Hacker News with reduced priority for AI driven content
yes. you can make one that filters arbitrary topics.

here is the demo (best viewed on desktop): https://sprinklz.io/demo/hackerNews

as well as the main site: https://sprinklz.io

where you can build and save arbitrary feeds.

sammy0910··on Hacker News with reduced priority for AI driven content
yes. it is a live updated feed.

here is a more detailed demo link (best viewed on desktop).

you can also visit the homepage at https://sprinklz.io if you want a more permanent account where you can create and save custom feeds

sammy0910··on Hacker News with reduced priority for AI driven content
something that makes this website different from the others, is it lets you filter by _any_ combination of topics, and allows you to edit them live and in real time.

see (view on desktop)

https://sprinklz.io/demo/hackerNews

for a more detailed example

thanks for the your thoughts, and i will also keep working on making it faster.

sammy0910··on Hacker News with reduced priority for AI driven content
yes.
sammy0910··on Hacker News with reduced priority for AI driven content
I previously worked on this, but made substanital improvements to the underlying implementation, and now the filters work much better.

This is also a general purpose tool that you can modify/customize

sammy0910··on Ask HN: Can we please limit the AI news flood?
theres also

https://sprinklz.io/public/pdwt4dve5uai

which additionally lets you add and modify custom filters

"Was this vibe coded, or was it carefully crafted with a human making most of the design decisions and the LLM used mostly as a quicker alternative to typing in all the code"?

yes. I want to know how much thought and effort was put into it.

sammy0910··on e is a customizable self-aware Emacs-like editor written in Chez Scheme
can you confirm whether this is ai-written or human driven?
sammy0910··on Show HN: Hacker News with reduced priority for AI driven content
i did my best to follow hn guidelines, so if any moderators have info for me on why this was flagged/to help me understand how to post better here that would be helpful
sammy0910··on Show HN: Hacker News with reduced priority for AI driven content
this is not vibe coded.

it is part of a much larger project than just this page (https://sprinklz.io), which I have been working on, on and off, for almost 4 years.

sammy0910··on Show HN: Hacker News with reduced priority for AI driven content
it basically does a combination of: -- string text matching + embeddings

unfortunately there isn't a dashboard yet in the logged out view, but if you view the feed when logged into sprinklz you can directly see (and edit) all the params used

sammy0910··on Show HN: Hacker News with reduced priority for AI driven content
it isn't visible from this view, but it's designed so that you can edit the ranking params directly from your browser, e.g. https://sprinklz.io/demo/headlineNews or https://sprinklz.io/demo/codeEditor
sammy0910··on Show HN: Hacker News with reduced priority for AI driven content
nice, yeah, I will keep working on it

I wanted to make this general purpose enough that it could handle large datasets (e.g. i want to do thiings like https://sprinklz.io/demo/headlineNews), so I was hesitant to do things like make 1-LLM-call-per-article, but I'll keep exploring ways to make it better

I added more info to the about section explaining signup.

I also want to make the 'Demos' text better, but I'm still working out exactly what it should say. Unfortunately if I remove '(click a box below)', people don't know they can click on it lol.

I'm thinking maybe "Try It Live (click a box below)" or maybe "Demos (click a box to try it first)", but idk its hard to get it right without adding visual noise. I agree though, and want to make it better.
