samtheprogram··on Recovering from AI addiction
Admitting you have no control is how you stop having “just 1 drink”… because you don’t have control.

You are taking the “no control” thing too literally.

samtheprogram··on My open source project was relicensed by a YC company [license updated]
This was informative. Thanks for the analysis.
samtheprogram··on My open source project was relicensed by a YC company [license updated]
That was my point / what the joke is: it appears to be down ranked (or it’s a comment thing as your sibling points out), it’s serious, and it’s a YC company.
samtheprogram··on My open source project was relicensed by a YC company [license updated]
What a joke. Nearly as many upvotes as tmux-rs in half the time, ~50% more comments, and this is just shy of the front page / twice as far from #1.

Doesn’t seem to match the natural algorithm.

samtheprogram··on The End of Moore's Law for AI? Gemini Flash Offers a Warning
There’s absolutely nothing wrong with putting a small plug at the end of an article.
samtheprogram··on Facebook is asking to use Meta AI on photos you haven’t yet shared
I would love a source about the immigration form. That would at least make more sense. Weed is legal in half of the US. As a citizen, I find the story troubling.

The tweets just saying “drug use” and then you hear it’s weed is ridiculous. Why wouldn’t they just state that they lied on their immigration form about drug use?

With root.
samtheprogram··on FLUX.1 Kontext [Dev] – Open Weights for Image Editing
If I’m understanding this correctly, you can’t run this in a commercial setting, even if you’re not creating a derivative but simply generating outputs?
samtheprogram··on Building Effective AI Agents
Nothing you said contradicts the quote. When they say in sequence, they don’t mean “in a previously defined order”, they mean “not in parallel”.
samtheprogram··on First thoughts on o3 pro
This isn’t reasoning at all. It’s applying a well known algorithm to a problem. It literally says “classic” in its response.
samtheprogram··on Containerization is a Swift package for running Linux containers on macOS
That… sucks. I’m going to play with this.
samtheprogram··on Microsoft Office migration from Source Depot to Git
This isn’t Reddit. It’s a lame drive-by joke. The system is working.
samtheprogram··on Magistral — the first reasoning model by Mistral AI
Not only the quantization, but what’s available via ollama is magistral-small (for local inference), not the -medium variant.
samtheprogram··on Containerization is a Swift package for running Linux containers on macOS
> For instance, no software for "cloud" drives (google drive, onedrive, icloud drive) is allowed to locate its local copy on an "External" drive

Source? Is this self-imposed, or what does “allowed” mean?

Even if true, technical people can work around this by either spoofing a non-external drive or using `ln`, no?

samtheprogram··on Containerization is a Swift package for running Linux containers on macOS
Jai has been one exception I can think of here. It hasn’t been publicly released yet, either (you can email/request pre-release access, though)
samtheprogram··on Google restricts Android sideloading
Alternative app stores. See Epic v. Google.

I’m an Apple user, but above all I value choice. Isn’t the point of Android that it’s an open ecosystem?

ADB is arguably worse than what Apple did in the EU for sideloading to abide court orders, and Apple was lambasted.

I would try *.timer. If you’re in zsh, quote it.
samtheprogram··on Show HN: I rewrote my Mac Electron app in Rust
This. Reminds me of Casey Muratori warning people to not trust benchmarks made by random people on the internet.

There’s absolutely no way Tauri apps take 25s to launch. Source: I’ve played with Tauri on Linux. This is an order of magnitude off.

samtheprogram··on The Windows Subsystem for Linux is now open source
Good point, thanks for the insight!
samtheprogram··on The Windows Subsystem for Linux is now open source
I responded "This is not true" to a sibling comment about this same topic, but about "shared libraries", which is the opposite problem (multiple programs could load the same shared library and try to interact).

This is absolutely not true for Linux kernel updating. While you won't be using the new kernel before rebooting, there's 0 risk in not rebooting, because there's exactly 1 version of the kernel running on the machine -- it's loaded into memory when your computer starts.

There's of course rare exceptions, like when a dynamically linked library you just installed depends on a minimum specific version of the Linux kernel you also just installed, but this is extremely rare in Linux land, as backwards compatibility of programs with older kernels is generally a given. "We do not break userspace"

samtheprogram··on The Windows Subsystem for Linux is now open source
This is not true. Different programs on the same system that interoperate and use different versions of the same shared library can absolutely cause issues.

For a trivial change to glibc, it won't cause issues. But there's a lot of shared libraries and lots of different kinds of changes in different kinds of libraries that can happen.

I still haven't nailed if it was due to a shared library update, but just the other day, after running upgrades I was unable to su or sudo / authenticate as a user until after rebooting.

samtheprogram··on Zed: High-performance AI Code Editor
This. Honestly, their issue based on Zed’s issue tracker is likely with NVIDIA drivers inconsistencies, which ironically is due to the closed source nature of NVIDIA drivers (its workarounds all the way down bringing pain to app and driver developers), not Zed (which is indeed FOSS, just not “volunteer” driven).
samtheprogram··on Zed: High-performance AI Code Editor
You should report an issue with your specs, not just say “other applications don’t have this problem” — especially as a Linux user.

For one, not all applications are GPU accelerated.

Two, their UX may need to be improved for a specific hardware configuration. I have used Zed with good performance on Intel dGPU, AMD dGPU, and Intel iGPU without issue — my guess is a missing dependency?

samtheprogram··on Are you the same person you used to be? (2022)
This is a philosophical article, not clickbait.
samtheprogram··on Giving Software Away for Free
Yes. Static pages can include frontend JavaScript, including WebAssembly + Pyodide. You'll likely just have a build step that produces the actual JavaScript bundle you'll be serving statically.

As for obsfucation, you could precompile to Python bytecode (.pyc files), and then to obsfucate that further you could e.g. pyminify before the bytecode compilation.

There's also pyarmor, but as of 2022 [1] that was unsupported.

samtheprogram··on Trump exempts phones, computers, chips from ‘reciprocal’ tariffs
False, you said:

> only the richest companies getting exemptions

…when the reality is that certain classes of goods were exempted. You reiterated the clickbaity headline.

Products like the Librem phone have exceptions. Is Purism one of the richest companies?

samtheprogram··on UK Effort to Keep Apple Encryption Fight Secret Is Blocked
Because while you might agree with the current regime, laws, etc, and they may not be abusing their all knowing powers, allowing government (or any corporation) such power means they can change the rules, for example in an authoritarian direction, and you have 0 recourse, power, or leverage in the situation.
