samuelizdat··on Is early-onset cancer an emerging global epidemic?
I think a young Harvard math professor wrote about this in the 90's.
samuelizdat··on Chat control: EU Commission presents mass surveillance plan on May 11
The Panopticon is a marvelous machine which, whatever use one may wish to put it to, produces homogeneous effects of power.
samuelizdat··on Amazon workers at 100 more facilities want to unionize: Amazon Labor Union
Is it true that they got people to show up to the union meetings by offering baked ziti and weed? Is it that easy? What other collective goals can be accomplished this way?
samuelizdat··on France's Bogdanoff Twins Die Days Apart
Coroners bow to Bogdanoffs, in contact with morticians, possess cadaver-like abilities...
samuelizdat··on Christmas in 19th-Century America (1995)
What kind of a Grinch would write such a hideous song. I'm willing to bet they weren't Christian.
samuelizdat··on Facts don’t change our minds (2018)
"The specific distinction to which actions and motives can be reduced is that between friend and enemy."
samuelizdat··on Expanding our private information policy to include media
Will this drive an increase traffic to things like the fediverse? If it drives people away, is this not good? If hegemonic tech-giants wish to over bureaucratize everything, is the ethical response to decentralize?
samuelizdat··on California moves to recommend delaying algebra to 9th grade statewide
I remember when Bush started all this and it was called "No child left behind" and all my teachers were calling it "No child left intact". Weird how that changed. Why is that?
samuelizdat··on Freedom is not a goal, but a direction
Freedom is the degree to which you are able to navigate the power process. The power process is the ability to identify and change something within a system. For example, if there is a vending machine with coke and you want pepsi. Is there a process that you can use to make that happen? If there is, then you have freedom. This of course extends to bigger things than soda. "Sovereign is he who makes the exception"
samuelizdat··on The Costs of Requiring Accounts
Consider the same theory applied to video game modding tools. In the 90s and early 2000's the freedom to work outside the scope of the authorized system created plenty of low quality maps and mods, but it also created things like Counter Strike, DOTA 2, Galactic Conquest (now Battlefront).

When is the last time good content was made in gaming? All the mods that were made with passion are now soulless DLC and pop culture referencing micro transactions. Everything is just remakes because no one has the courage to innovate. Anonymity is an inherent good. If you don't like your anonymous peers, then perhaps gatekeeping is also good too.

samuelizdat··on Scientists: Don’t Feed the Doubt Machine
Less activist, more puritan priest trained as a new institutional clergy.
samuelizdat··on Women earned the majority of doctoral degrees in 2020 for the 12th straight year
"Okay google, show me graphs on SSRI prescriptions since 2008." "Siri, show me fastest growing cause of death among women ages 30+ who are unmarried without children." "Alexa, show me how ACT scores are weighted by gender and race... now graph it."

Fellas, I think we've been set up.

samuelizdat··on Governor vows criminal prosecution of reporter who found flaw in state website
Remember when a guy "Hacked" AT&T when the new iPad came out in 2010? I wonder what happened to that guy? lol
samuelizdat··on Whistleblower to Congress: Facebook products harm kids and democracy
"The supreme luxury of the society of technical necessity will be to grant the bonus of Useless Revolt and of an acquiescent smile." - Jacques Ellul
samuelizdat··on Machine-Learning media bias
I'd be more interested in calculating bias based on what they DO or DON'T report entirely. It's one thing to report on something with bias, it is more telling to note what they selectively ignore.
samuelizdat··on U.S. and key allies accuse China of Microsoft Exchange cyberattacks
And? U.S. and key allies install backdoors in device firmware and imbedded chips from manufacturers to spy on their own citizens. Why should we care at this point? We've had over 20 years to have this conversation, too late now. lol
samuelizdat··on The Collapse of American Identity
This article is funny because the author comes from a place that has no problem with identity when it comes to Palestinians. Curious!
samuelizdat··on Modular Homes for Under $50k
You WILL live in the pod
samuelizdat··on To protect against weaponized drones, we must understand their key strengths
Wouldn't the solution be jamming or EMP related? Of course, because the technological system must propagate itself at any cost this idea is counter-intuitive. Technological progress is seen as bending towards an inherent good. People never stop to think if it will be bad. Now people are to live in fear of drone swarms because nobody has autonomy in the technological system. People think they control technology, but it is really technology that controls us.

samuelizdat··on The lab-leak theory: inside the fight to uncover Covid-19’s origins
You guys really think people would do that? Lie about a crisis to consolidate power? Those WMDs were real, they HAVE to be! People with power over me wouldn't lie because that's wrong!
samuelizdat··on Belarus has temporarily banned most of its citizens from leaving
Ukraine struggles with a sense of national identity because for the most of history it was a buffer region of roving cossack bands up until the 18th century. The concept of Ukraine as a national entity is still very new.

Ukrainians in Azov super-hate communism because of what happened in WW2 so they adopt the opposite stance from WW2. In the grand scheme of "history of Ukraine" they don't have much else to draw from.

You're worried to much about the symbols they use and are arguing "well, what really even IS a neo-nazi" when you should be asking questions like "Why does Azov run military training camps for children" Western journalists from Vice even covered them. Associated Press did as well, before editing the article to take out the part about the camps being funded not by the united states, but the Ukraine national guard (US gives money to the Ukraine national guard, not Azov directly so it's Kosher)

samuelizdat··on Instagram lets users hide likes to reduce social media pressure
It's not likes giving people anxiety, it's the gaze of the panopticon.
samuelizdat··on Pentagon surveilling Americans without a warrant, Senator Wyden reveals
Jeremy Bentham and his consequences have been a disaster for the human race.

samuelizdat··on LiveLeak shuts down after 15 years online
LiveLeak was the only place I know where I could find footage of warcrimes in Ukraine that will more than likely never be "a part of our national conversation".

Does the media tell you who Azov battalion or right-sector is? That we have no problem funneling weapons and money to them? Even if they did, would they show you the video of them crucifying and setting on fire a captured enemy? Liveleak did.

samuelizdat··on Only Google is really allowed to crawl the web
That depends, would Google let us know?
samuelizdat··on Pseudophilosophy encourages confused, self-indulgent thinking
Baudrillard would have more parallels to what they are trying to convey than Foucault if they want to pick French Post-modernists.

The author is just a member of clergy upset that uneducated barbarians and peasants have unorthodox beliefs. Yet they are just victims to post-truth hyperreality. What is their solution to keep people in line? The AI from Metal Gear Solid 2? Who is this written for? Are flat-earth people or anti-vax people going to read this and change their mind? It's just ball fanning.

samuelizdat··on Businesses should try to be the best, not the biggest
"Infinite growth is the ideology of a cancer cell" was written by Edward Abbey a ecologist and author of the book Desert Solitaire. Might be worth looking into.
samuelizdat··on 70TB of Parler users’ messages, videos, and posts leaked by security researchers

samuelizdat··on Misinformation ‘Superspreaders’ Seed False Election Theories
