satanfirst··on I hacked a dating app (and how not to treat a security researcher)
The claim that it should have come up in a government vetting process seems to be proof that one should publish one's own dating information before entrusting it to a site that might have lost it or worse might provide it to a government specifically.
satanfirst··on US Copyright Office found AI companies breach copyright. Its boss was fired
That's not logical. If the savant has perfect recall and makes minor edits they are like a digital copy and aren't really like a human, neural network or by extension any other ML model that isn't over-fitted.
satanfirst··on Moderna's Super-Vaccine for Flu and Covid Works–Now Politics Could Sink It
The US doesn't seem more relevant than its vaccinated population now. https://www.who.int/publications/m/item/who-seasonal-influen...
satanfirst··on 'We Currently Have No Container Ships,' Seattle Port Says
> Now we have no trade and a drop in demand for US currency.

Trade hasn't been this fair to the US since before WWII.

satanfirst··on People Who Hype Cursor Usually Lack Technical Skills
> pronounce incorrectly

Knowing the correct pronunciation means you watch videos or have a social group that discusses it, that doesn't mean you are necessarily competent like someone who reads primary sources.

satanfirst··on Europe launches program to lure scientists away from the US
Drawing on one or even a few experiences for a conclusion for all of Europe in all sectors is a bit much. Scientific Organizations are not looking for local language skills. Many are in Germany which is very bureaucratic about other aspects of life, but they all spend their time on standardized International bureaucracy. The Universities in other countries might be harder to get in to, yet I wouldn't buy a $250k US University scratch ticket in a field like science. (The US University is a particularly poor investment for less qualified students.)
satanfirst··on Doge software engineer's computer infected by info-stealing malware
Ask Rudy Giuliani or any architect foolish enough to take a project from him. While Trump might know more about protecting people who help him than he did then, it would be out of character for him to expend the time it takes to sign something if his benefit in the transaction is over.
satanfirst··on Era of U.S. dollar may be winding down
You mean like the US President?
satanfirst··on Dasung Paperlike 13K is a 13.3 inch E Ink color monitor
IMO they don't sound loke they actually have better trade offs for comic books than LCD yet. I.e. poor color and low resolution.

Leaving a color screen on a set page seems like the real use case. Signs, often idle museum UIs, etc?

satanfirst··on We have reached the "severed fingers and abductions" stage of crypto revolution
Watching how it is working. That the laundering can be tracked is just an expense to the process of recruiting suckers to be the visible parties who eventually do time and don't know about anything but the other visible parties.
satanfirst··on When flat rate movers won't answer your calls
Control is met by having ample choice. You are eroding control if you settle for a duopoly where your movement between them is more hassle for you and balances out by the unhappy moving in the other direction.
satanfirst··on When flat rate movers won't answer your calls
You really have to make a distinction between monopolies of control and the rest. If you can go to multiple shops, restaurants, etc, then you have selection as control. The troublesome ones here have a lot of lock-in, if you can just move towns, switch phone OSes, etc, then you've probably sacrificed quite a bit to avoid that lock-in.
satanfirst··on For AI Startups, a 7-Day Work Week Isn't Enough
Bad manager? It sounds like they immediately solved the problem of weekend call centers with AI!
satanfirst··on Why do econ journalists keep making this basic mistake?
You skipped the next sentence where these are partially canceled out by investment, consumer spending, etc.

Not wrong, deceiving. Real GDP is down because of some factors that cancel out and because the President sucks. Is the correct way to read that executive approved message.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Howard_Lutnick

https://www.bea.gov/

"These movements were partly offset by increases in investment, consumer spending, and exports."

You can't make someone understand what that investment and consumer spending is if their job depends on not understanding it.

satanfirst··on Quebec refuses to reinvest in Lion Electric
If there is a federal tariff on Canadian vehicles that applies then everyone including states has to decide if they want to purchase what they intended or keep the budget they planned.
satanfirst··on Retailers will soon have only about 7 weeks of full inventories left
I get his PoV, but I think most people who have thought about it know which tools should have been used at the end of the cold war. The difficulty is precedent and the preference to the power two factions over structure.

Doing something to fix the US' executive branch problem with the proper Amendments would be likely to fail because it would be too neutral to collect from lobyists or sell on emotion.

satanfirst··on Switzerland suspends Deutsche Bahn trains due to chronic delays
On time trains by terminating each side in Konstanz or Milano are an easy way to satisfy Switzerland, but as a passenger it just means missed reservations on an earlier train.
satanfirst··on I created Perfect Wiki and reached $250k in annual revenue without investors
This often breaks after a call has had interrupted shares and you have to leave and come back. This is one bug where you don't have to also reboot, great improvement MS!
satanfirst··on How the US defense secretary circumvents official DoD communications equipment
I'd give different advice.

You shouldn't share state secrets with the US. They will be on or transferred between misconfigured cloud accounts. Some agency will eventually get authorization for analysis of them with an intention of financial espionage. The probable or confirmed loss of them will serve as a plausible deniability for the US when it misuses them.

satanfirst··on Secret Deals, Foreign Investments: The Rise of Trump’s Crypto Firm
Fad intangible assets is pretty mind boggling to me. If you are thinking someone is the next Shakespeare while they are alive then you are probably going to be wrong and when you are right their coin should warrant a future value that is marginal compared to whatever the teeny bops actually prefer in a hundred years.
satanfirst··on U.S. autism data project sparks uproar over ethics, privacy and intent
It's only like my opinion, but I think a man who describes his father as a "terrible human being" has enough awareness for self awareness unless the claimed disorder is something self obsessed like narcissism.
satanfirst··on Lenovo May Be Avoiding 'Windows Tax' via Cheaper Laptops with Preinstalled Linux
Microsoft was making it very hard for OEMs to sell some computers without Windows for a number of decades. I would assume they are more afraid of an increase in law enforcement than usual.
satanfirst··on Ask HN: Could we possibly be the last generation of programmers?
Software hadn't consumed the world yet, so there was plenty of programming in higher languages to bring in 999 of every 1000 programmers in to when virtually no one was still needed for assembly.. I'm skeptical that there's much need for more technical specialists at the next higher levels as business people can now get all the help they were supposed to get in codeless systems, etc.
satanfirst··on Avoiding skill atrophy in the age of AI
Yes, but they weren't field specific from the rise of the PC to the iPhone. The next life skill, homeEc skill, public forum, etc meant the average kid or middle class adult was being judged on whether they were working on these skills.
satanfirst··on A tuition-free school created by Zuckerberg and Chan will shutter next year
I view these things as a way to make up for not paying adequate tax rates by paying for the things they felt best about in what tax should have paid for.

Flaws with this setup aside, I wouldn't feel good about building a Trump compatible school.. And of course the expectation that they continue is just precedent/norms which means less than nothing in show power by arbitrary disruption land.

satanfirst··on Wikipedia’s nonprofit status questioned by D.C. U.S. attorney
Their entry on Wikipedia is well worth a read:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Heritage_Foundation

Kind of explains a lot in the balancing act in Trumps rise to power while trying to look like a marionette for various interests this term. They should remember Hitler's rebellion from his masters.

satanfirst··on Daily driving a Linux phone, but why?
Uncomfortable yes, but you need to pay attention to details that big tinfoil fashion can't be bothered with. For example, you can't use Reynolds wrap because it was modified with preforations for the government. They say that was to keep your Jonny Wurster's from smoking crack, but obviously sub-nanometer waves..
satanfirst··on A Scaled Down Look at Spending, Revenue, and What's Being Cut
Never attribute to stupidity that which can be adequately explained by the obvious presence of the malicous in a net zero game like politics or class warfare.
satanfirst··on Google reveals sky-high Gemini usage numbers in antitrust case
I originally moved to duckduckgo to use their !g/!b/!.. for quick search comparisons when I was very much a power user of search, but these days ddg's first results or results after adding a qualifying word are usually adequate for my usage and my power search skills are in decline.
satanfirst··on DOGE worker’s code supports NLRB whistleblower
Recent untested precedent exists of blanket pardons needed for unqualified crimes and they are so far likely to be challenged on a different technicality (first?).. Asking what people think is not confused unless you are being uncharitable or know a lot of actual precedents that we all should know from another era.
