scarfaceneo··on iPhone users can now set WhatsApp as their default calling and texting app
Because pretty much everyone who isn’t from the US is on WhatsApp, and voip calls quality is infinitely better than normal voice calls.

I either use FaceTime or WhatsApp.

scarfaceneo··on Zen browser had a backdoor enabled by default
Yelp, back to librewolf it is.
scarfaceneo··on Trees not profits: we're giving up our right to ever sell Ecosia (2018)
You can donate to an organisation and use their search engine.
scarfaceneo··on The DOJ still wants Google to sell off Chrome
None. Safari is the best browser I’ve used by a long margin.
scarfaceneo··on Show HN: Appstat – Process Monitor for Windows
They’re all kind of lacking imo compared to btop.

https://flathub.org/apps/io.missioncenter.MissionCenter is a good option though

scarfaceneo··on James Harrison, whose blood donations saved >2M babies, has died
In Brazil you get a day off work every year to donate. Which I think is a good compromise.
scarfaceneo··on Difficult Employees (and How to Handle Them)
What in the actual hell is this doing here.
scarfaceneo··on 'Hey Number 17 '
Those poor bosses, they’re employing people that are barely making them any profit, purely out of the goodness in their hearts.

Spare me your BS.

scarfaceneo··on NASA Downgrades the Risk of 2024 YR4 to Below 1%
Exactly. When people like Musk try and brainwash you into believing “we” should be a multi planetary species, what he means is “they” should be, and “you” should fund it.
scarfaceneo··on File Pilot: A file explorer built for speed with a modern, robust interface
Two completely unrelated products.
scarfaceneo··on Altman: OpenAI not for sale, especially to competitor who is not able to beat us
Elon is that another one of your alts?
scarfaceneo··on Altman: OpenAI not for sale, especially to competitor who is not able to beat us
Ah yeah, he’s very popular… with the “pick me” crowd
scarfaceneo··on Apple software update "bug" enables Apple Intelligence
Yes, but if we’re discussing solutions, maybe it would be relevant to understand where the problem stems from
scarfaceneo··on UK Weighs Making Netflix Users Pay License Fee to Fund BBC
Yes, it’s for live TV and/or any BBC content
scarfaceneo··on Magic Links Have Rough Edges, but Passkeys Can Smooth Them Over
> Imagine if you could link your email client and your web browser closely together so that every site that offered a magic link "just worked". You click a button, it emails you, your email client silently notifies the web browser and deletes the email, and then you get logged in.

How the hell do you think that’s better? Passkeys are absolutely portable, many of the password managers on the market allow you to export them.

What happens if google suddenly decides to deactivate your account?

scarfaceneo··on Magic Links Have Rough Edges, but Passkeys Can Smooth Them Over
So your only change would be needing to store a recovery code instead of the password.
scarfaceneo··on Magic Links Have Rough Edges, but Passkeys Can Smooth Them Over
That’s why you don’t create a passkey for the service that manages your credentials.

Use a pair of yubikeys.

BTW, all major email providers have a flow to allow you to recover access to your account.

When you enable passkeys it doesn’t suddenly deactivate every other way of logging in.

scarfaceneo··on Show HN: I designed an espresso machine and coffee grinder
MKBHD is the last person I’d go to for anything tech related.

He, like many others, do little more than just read spec sheets.

I like his car related content though, reckless driving notwithstanding

scarfaceneo··on Assassination is a leaky abstraction
HN: “you know, in reality the French Revolution was actually a bad thing. Feudalism is where it’s at”
scarfaceneo··on Assassination is a leaky abstraction
Stakes will be too high for that. The risk of that backfiring will be immense.

Well, there’s always the chance of claiming the shooter got away, and be lying in a ditch somewhere

scarfaceneo··on 65% of Employees Bypass Cybersecurity Measures, New Study Finds
You still need to create a password. And since nearly always the biometric option doesn’t replace the password, it’s a moot point.
scarfaceneo··on High School Student's First App – NWS Weather Report
Most devs nowadays don’t even offer you that option, so kudos for that alone
scarfaceneo··on Will passkeys ever replace passwords? Can they? Here's why they should
Hi, to answer your hypothetical situation, what I do is save my passwords on apple passwords, and use two yubikeys as the security keys for the apple account itself (cool fact, apple forces you to use two keys as a safeguard, which I think is pretty cool and haven’t seen anyone else doing).
scarfaceneo··on IPv6 networks do apparently get probed
Thank you. The whole read indeed feels like not understanding IPv6.

Just like people advertising not broadcasting SSID, or changing the SSH port, this is just a false sense of security.

scarfaceneo··on We're experimenting with advertising
The mental gymnastics required to justify ads always gets me.

They make your experience worse in every possible way.

scarfaceneo··on Mark Zuckerberg Wants to Feed You More AI Slop
Thanks, I almost paid the £29.99/mth they’re asking for
scarfaceneo··on NASA remains silent on why crew went to hospital after dragon splashdown
That’s cause you never had space motion sickness.
scarfaceneo··on Fedora KDE Desktop Spin Promoted to Same Tier as Gnome-Based Fedora Workstation
Libadwaita is a horrible design language. It wastes so much space, the disparity between gtk3/4 hurts the eyes and you pretty much depend on extensions for the most basic of things.

KDE is the superior DE by far

scarfaceneo··on Fedora KDE Desktop Spin Promoted to Same Tier as Gnome-Based Fedora Workstation
No, that would be like Tesla making a car on which you can’t open the windows, because Elon thinks you shouldn’t need to.
scarfaceneo··on Iceland embraced a shorter work week. Here's how it turned out
I fail to see your point here. If anything, shorter working weeks would have a bigger impact on countries with lower populations
