schumpeter··on It takes 5 cloud services to hear my doorbell
I’m not sure how it’s so hard for people replying to you, to understand, cameras are a deterrent. Crime is often opportunistic. I grew up in 80s Miami, the common tactic was knock on your front door to see if anyone’s home, when no one answers, they’d kick in the backdoor.

Cameras deter crime. Not ALL crime. Criminals aren’t stupid and will simply go burgle someone that isn’t recording.

schumpeter··on Show HN: Skyline Co-op is like SimTower, but built around democratic socialism
Simtower, which he modeled this after, only allowed lobby on the first floor… or a multi floored lobby.
schumpeter··on LAPD lets contract with surveillance giant Flock expire
Do you need flock to do this for you, though? I have cameras around my property, and they catch everyone entering and leaving my subdivision. If the police need access to the recordings, they can get a court order or ask nicely. What I don't do, is share the feeds with everyone willy-nilly so the police can cast wide dragnets and do god-knows-what-else with the data.
schumpeter··on The real cost of owning a home
Sounds like your friend did something wrong with his investments. I had rentals before 2008, and bought more during the crash in South Florida for pennies on the dollar. It was a great time to buy.
schumpeter··on Schlitz Is Gone, but First It's Getting One Last Hurrah
Did I hallucinate drinking it in high school around 92-94?
schumpeter··on We rewrote JSONata with AI in a day, saved $500k/year
If I had to guess… The same thing happening to a lot of the industry… the era of cheap money is over.
schumpeter··on Cuba's national electric grid collapses, leaving millions without power
Having family in Cuba, I guess this could work, but it doesn’t scale, because someone will inevitably steal your horses for dinner, when you aren’t looking.
schumpeter··on Cuba's national electric grid collapses, leaving millions without power
Technically the US did blockade Cuba from receiving oil, specifically from Venezuela. Blocking tankers, boarding them, and even confiscating them.

The embargo continues, as it has for decades, but the oil blockade is a real thing.

schumpeter··on Stepping down as Mockito maintainer after ten years
Fair. The spelling is off, but the pronunciation is the same.
schumpeter··on Stepping down as Mockito maintainer after ten years
It also translates to “small booger”, in Spanish, which always made me question who thought the name was a good idea over there.
schumpeter··on 2025 was the year Xbox died
You can turn off crossplay in the Xbox privacy settings. I do this for BF6, as I’m old and can’t keep up with MnK players. ;-)
schumpeter··on Ask HN: What would you do if you didn't work in tech?
Bus driver in SF or near a tech hub, so I can listen to mindless grifting and endless complaining by tech workers that would re-enforce the life decision I made.
schumpeter··on Boom, bubble, bust, boom. Why should AI be different?
Those people still need to rent. So as long as the rental income covers the mortgage, you’re ahead of the game and someone is paying an asset down for you.
schumpeter··on OpenAI, Nvidia fuel $1T AI market with web of circular deals
Nvidia is also investing hundreds of billions in OpenAI.
schumpeter··on AI cheats: Why you didn't notice your teammate was cheating
Activision CoD uses EOMM, engagement optimized match making. They’re optimizing for your to stay on, much like a gambler playing slots. You allow one win where the player is matched with lesser opponents, and then the next X games, you’re the lesser opponent.

It’s all tuned to keep you playing and want that dopamine hit of a win that’s always just around the corner.

schumpeter··on Monster Cables picked the wrong guy to threaten (2008)
You have to wonder what it is with companies having “monster” in their names that makes them such monsters.

This story reminded me of the multi-year battle by Monster energy going after MonsterFishKeepers.com

3. Affiliate programs with online retailers?

After looking at doing something similar, that was the only monetization angle I could find.

schumpeter··on Japan's clothes-drying bathrooms
I find this interesting… I grew up in a Latin family and learned to shower at night. I rationalized it as, not going to bed dirty, and you aren’t going to get dirtier just sleeping anyway.
schumpeter··on Alexei Navalny has died
Because the only winning move it not to play. This is Europe's war. Not sure why the US is involved at all. It's not like Ukraine has oil or a NATO partner.
schumpeter··on It doesn’t take much public creativity to stand out as a job candidate
Would you have felt that way when people were boycotting buses in the Jim Crow south?
schumpeter··on Tech vendors have been hiking prices by up to 24% amid inflation
I can say after years of negotiating with enterprise software vendors, the reason I feel prices are being hiked, is that they finally have to show revenue growth to Wall Street. I don’t believe they’re inflating prices “just because”. I’m seeing companies (looking at you, Datadog), that are raising rates while their stock gets pummeled. I may be drawing a false correlation here, but I suspect prices are up because the era of cheap money and frothy stock valuations is ending and now it’s time to show revenue growth.
schumpeter··on Congress' push to regulate Big Tech is fizzling out
To the parent’s point, VW was saying for recent years they were going fully electric. This EU bill doesn’t harm them. In fact, it likely helps them against slower-moving competitors.
schumpeter··on High property taxes are good
Most states and counties I’ve lived in in the southeast US either exempt or minimize property taxes on residents that are over 65.

In fact, my current area (Cobb county, GA) nimbys keep trying to block assisted living residences. The argument is that old people move in, don’t pay into local funds, but the burden is hoisted on other younger families instead.

schumpeter··on America’s favorite family outings are increasingly out of reach
Using a fast pass is a must at Disney. Little to no wait at every ride. Additionally staying at a Disney resort let’s you stay an hour after everyone else and then even without the fast pass you cruise thru every line.
schumpeter··on IRS Will Soon Require Selfies for Online Access
Sort of... The federal government passed the National Minimum Drinking Age Act[1], showing they did care. Although they don't directly enforce drinking age mins, the carrot and the stick approach was used.

schumpeter··on Death by gentrification: the killing that shamed San Francisco
Here, let me help you out...

> ...there is no mention whatsoever of Nieto’s long and well-documented battle with mental illness. No mention of Nieto’s “history of aggressive and bizarre behavior and auditory hallucinations,” as described in a letter written by District Attorney George Gascón following his office’s investigation of the shooting. Likewise, no mention of “a clinical history of psychosis exacerbated by his failure to take ... medications.” No mention of a police report filed less than three weeks before Nieto’s death by a man alleging that Nieto tased him (Nieto, in turn, filed a police report claiming this was an act of self-defense). No mention of prior incidents in which police intervened when Nieto’s internal battles spilled out into the public sphere. - See more at: http://www.modernluxury.com/san-francisco/story/alex-nieto-w...
