scottfits··on GLM-5.3-Flash
interesting, thanks!
scottfits··on GLM-5.3-Flash
so is it confirmed if this is the mysterious OxAlpha model?
scottfits··on How Universities Should Prepare Founders
One thing I agree with and one I disagree with:

- I've always thought it was silly my university had an Entrepreneurship major. Starting a company is probably much better achieved by studying something technical or going deep into a problem space and seeing a problem there, not a generic "entrepreneurship" curriculum.

- I think startups starting as side projects was more of an artifact of the early YC days where startups could just be simple software that some engineers built on nights and weekends. Increasingly I feel like the next generation of startups is more capital intensive and requires more time commitment from deeply technical talent. Not in 100% of cases obviously.

scottfits··on GLM-5.3 (open-weight) beat Anthropic/OpenAI models – for 1/5 the cost
my prediction is even if open source Chinese models are 90% as good (or even a bit better, which I don’t really believe because of benchmark hacking) enterprises will still pay for Claude / ChatGPT and the harness, integrations, and peace of mind versus using some Chinese cloud.
scottfits··on GLM-5.3: Frontier coding with emergent cyber capabilities
what i appreciate most about this post is the level of transparency in how they built and scaled an RL pipeline. my friends at the big labs are so cagey about everything, and Zai is just putting out a great crash course for free.
scottfits··on Haters
the wisest lil wayne lyric is "jealousy is love and hate at the same time". often times, a hater is just someone who resents someone's success because they wished they were in that position.
scottfits··on Kimi Work
while it's true the model layer is getting commoditized, there is absolutely no way we are migrating any serious enterprise workflows to Kimi work. i think chinese models will continue to have an adoption problem.
scottfits··on The US Government Is Now a Shareholder in 26 Companies
i think an important nuance and the reason we don't suddenly have a sovereign wealth fund is it’s not a centralized US Gov buying stakes. It’s a bunch of different government entities using different pools of capital

- Commerce dept: Intel, IBM quantum, GlobalFoundries, D-Wave, Rigetti, xLight

- Dept of "war": MP Materials for rare earths, L3Harris rocket motors for munitions

- Energy dept: Lithium Americas / Thacker Pass, Westinghouse nuclear

- White House: U.S. Steel golden share

scottfits··on Ask HN: How do you share /skills across your dev team?
this is a pain point -- we also have .skill files duplicated across Claude Desktop and our agent's codebase and keeping them in sync is a pain.

I assume it's just something Anthropic hasn't gotten around to fixing yet. but following this thread

scottfits··on Claude Sonnet 5
> the computer use evaluation OSWorld-Verified. Sonnet 5 (orange line) is a strict improvement over Sonnet 4.6

cool to see, still waiting for models to get better at computer use.

scottfits··on Hacker News Daily podcast, created with vibecasting
so "vibecasting" is like vibecoding but for podcasting? interesting, this is gonna be a thing isn't it
scottfits··on GitHub Stacked PRs
cherry picking is so fragile, this is at least a step in the right direction
scottfits··on I Just Want Simple S3
100% - i really wanted Render to add this, feels like there is potential for a startup here
scottfits··on I am directing the Department of War to designate Anthropic a supply-chain risk
Besides just being yet another example of the Trump admin abusing power and weaponizing legitimate laws in illegitimate ways to extract concessions, there is another reason this is dumb -- which is that Anthropic just has the best models!

As someone who wants America to win, ripping out Claude and putting in xAI is a terrible idea. Definitely setting us back a few months on capabilities

scottfits··on Tailscale is pretty useful
super useful, at airgarage we have a network of license plate readers deployed around the country and tailscale is a game changer for remote access and debugging. https://www.airgarage.com/capabilities/license-plate-recogni...
scottfits··on Show HN: Omi – Open-source AI wearable for capturing conversations
Been using it for months, really like it!
scottfits··on Reverse engineering Ticketmaster's rotating barcodes
Very cool post, but as someone who has been on the other side of the situation, I do have sympathy for what they are trying to accomplish.

I bought a ticket that someone had double sold, and by the time I got to the door, they turned me away and said the ticket had already been used. So their system has good intentions, they just need to make it work offline.

scottfits··on Show HN: gpudeploy.com – "Airbnb" for GPUs
I have a cluster on RunPod and it's great, but there's definitely some opportunity in the space, for example if you can focus on transparency (utilization rates, more info about end user and their purpose, reporting) that would be helpful.

I think RunPod and Vast have most the market share but t's still early to the game

scottfits··on California governor vetoes bill to ban driverless AV trucks
This is great news and required a lot of courage from Governor Newsom. He was put in a tough place between two of his largest supporters (tech and labor). Paradigm shifts like autonomy are hard in the short term, but it never makes sense to hamstring technology to preserve jobs - if that were the case we'd still be paying punchcard operators instead of using computers. Not to mention that this will make our roads safer.
scottfits··on No code tool directory. Do people even use these?
Yes, can be better than upwork!
scottfits··on Sharing my investor update Notion template
Took me a while to figure out how to make an investor update in Notion with Charts, so I decided to publish this open source. Hope it's helpful. Only caveat is you need to use Notion2Charts for the charting until Notion builds charts natively
scottfits··on Show HN: Generate charts and graphs from CSVs with GPT-4
Recently built a project that turns CSVs and databases into charts and graphs using GPT3. This was inspired by trying to create visualizations for some data in Google Sheets and finding the UI hard to use. Let me know if you have feedback!
scottfits··on Show HN: Jumprope – Terminal-like commands for the Chrome search bar
Perhaps your sign up did not work - you have to have a google chrome account with an email address and then install the extension here.

https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/jumprope/peljbehfb...

if that doesnt work please reach out to scott@jumprope.ai and i will investigate

scottfits··on Show HN: Jumprope – Terminal-like commands for the Chrome search bar
thank you
scottfits··on Show HN: Jumprope – Terminal-like commands for the Chrome search bar
yes, i love autojump for terminal, definitely part of the inspiration for this. And I agree on adding more utility to create / edit - we are going in this direction for example jumprope has these commands:

c1 new - create a new calendar invite

m1 new - create a new email in gmail

scottfits··on Show HN: Jumprope – Terminal-like commands for the Chrome search bar
yes! my time working there using bunnylol for everything was actually the inspiration for the tool :)
scottfits··on Show HN: Jumprope – Terminal-like commands for the Chrome search bar
oops thank you
scottfits··on Show HN: Jumprope – Terminal-like commands for the Chrome search bar
this may happen if you don't have a user account signed in in Chrome? Jumprope needs an email to create your account.

let me know if this is the wrong diagnosis.

scottfits··on Show HN: Jumprope – Terminal-like commands for the Chrome search bar
Thanks for pointing out bangs, it's definitely a good product too. I do think Jumprope has a couple legs up:

You can create your own shortcuts at https://jumprope.ai without needing to submit them to ddg for approval

You can also do alias commands - for example I set it up so "prs" opens me github pull requests page for example and "zm" opens the company zoom link

but yes looks like bangs has some cool regex manipulation but hopefully Jumprope is easier to get started with.

scottfits··on Show HN: Jumprope – Terminal-like commands for the Chrome search bar
sorry, thanks i forgot to set that up. if you email me at scott@jumprope.ai i will add you to the firefox list
