scotty79··on I struggle to believe that AI R&D is ingenious
And what do people do? Do they engineer the best ideas one predictably chosen step after another?
scotty79··on Britain to make salary disclosure in job ads mandatory
And it was in their power to refuse. Now it won't be.
scotty79··on Cuban: Facebook knowingly runs AI deepfake scam ads; docs say $16B fraud revenue
Orthogonal in a sense that I'd like to see advertisers held accountable, but not through customer service. If I need to talk to a human to resolve anything, for me the system has already failed completely.
scotty79··on Blender's UI and Runtime: Much Faster Than GPUI
Not so much limitations. Rather behaviors I'm used to, around scrolling content, input fields, splitters for resizing panes etc. Can't recall specifics right now. Just small things that I usually get out of the box had to be implemented here.
scotty79··on $2.5T has been wiped from US stocks
Valuation is a terrible name for that number because this number has nothing to do with value and everyone knows that. Everyone knows that if shares were sold by their current owners, their income wouldn't be anywhere close to that number. So a company value is a ridiculously small fraction of that number and absolutely impossible to determine from it.
scotty79··on Blender's UI and Runtime: Much Faster Than GPUI
That sounds like an amazing idea. I've been using a lot of Rust+GPUI and sometimes behaviors that I'm expecting to be there just aren't.

Swapping it for UI that's as battle tested as Blender might improve things.

scotty79··on Cuban: Facebook knowingly runs AI deepfake scam ads; docs say $16B fraud revenue
That's completely orthogonal.
scotty79··on The Lisp curse, now coming to your ecosystem
Libraries and shared code have drawbacks though. All software using a particular library likely shares its vulnerabilities.

Even if you need a small part of the functionality you bring in whole library when you use it increasing your exposure.

Standard way of doing things might impede better way of doing things for each particular application. And so on...

LLMs alter nearly every parameter in every value calculation.

Future software will often have single digit dependancies and userbase of 1.

scotty79··on I struggle to believe that AI R&D is ingenious
I feel like at this point in time only agent swarms can have truly innovative behavior. We'll see if this behavior can be distilled into something smaller and more cost effective.
scotty79··on How accurately did science fiction stories predict AI?
It's gonna be cool to reevaluate that in few years. Different stories might move to the top as real world AIs capabilities grow and new behaviors manifest.
scotty79··on I wish tech companies knew more about me
That doesn't explain why they show me ads in a language I don't understand just because I have ip from that country. I'm sure they know it of they know my gender, at least approximate age and other stuff.
scotty79··on A thousand fewer paths to root
> How did we get to the point where there are a thousand privilege escalation exploits in the kernel?

Simians hand coding.

We did our best.

2^100 is a lot of things to try though
scotty79··on RTX 5090 Street Prices Top $9k as Nvidia GPU Costs Climb
Anyone has an idea when will it unclog even a little bit? When is the next NVIDIA lineup comming out? Are they going to release any middle of the road products like strong AMD Insights?
scotty79··on Verification Is Not Knowledge: Science needs more than answers
We are gradually teaching AI to teach us, so we can appreciate its brilliance. So you'll get your understanding eventually. The gap between what we understand and what AIs achieve is still going to be growing though. But understanding everything is not the goal. The goal is to understand enough to feel good about it. To placate us.
scotty79··on C++26 Disapproved
When I didn't tell it what to use, recently it used VB (mixed with Python). Not ideal.
scotty79··on C++26 Disapproved
Honest question.

If I want to spin up a new project with a coding agent to explore some idea and I'd like the bare metal performance, why would I choose C++ over Rust?

I could choose TypeScript over Rust if I wanted it to be html first or I could choose Go if I wanted it to be clear of the complexity of memory management or I could choose C# if I wanted it to have best interface with windows stuff or I could choose something Erlang VM based for resilience and multithreading.

But what reason might I have to pick C++?

scotty79··on C++26 Disapproved
Why would anyone want to rewrite anything in C++ given they can choose anything else? Like Rust or Go or C or Zig or literally anything else.
scotty79··on Quili AI
Did they track their water usage for that day?
scotty79··on The Megadonors Who Have Poured $1.2B into the Midterms
But this doesn't help with taxation of the rich. There are very few ways the rich can't easily dodge. Tying tax to something they actually spend money on and can't really hide it because of the scruitany on the spending of poliitcal parties would be one such additional way.
scotty79··on Why are Soviet math textbooks so hardcore in comparison to US textbooks? (2017)
And who made those innovations? Not a lot of Western born and raised people, I'm guessing.
scotty79··on The Megadonors Who Have Poured $1.2B into the Midterms
We can't stop them using money for influencing politics. But this way the society could get a fair residual from that activity.
scotty79··on The Megadonors Who Have Poured $1.2B into the Midterms
Maybe donations to political parties could be just taxed at 200% (technically ~76% but 200 sounds better)?

To give a million to any party you have to pay 2 in tax.

When you cover yourself with the blanket, others see the blanket. When you cover yourself with this, others see background.
scotty79··on New 3D thermal invisibility cloak makes objects disappear from infrared cameras
It could cloak a well insulated soldier from being a dark spot on the background.
scotty79··on Mathematics has changed. Let's act like it
The thing is that if you don't learn to drive some destinations are unachievable. And destination is more important than the journey unless you travel for pleasure or personal development.

I'm so glad that sanity ulitmately won in his mind.
scotty79··on Serbia just elected the world's brainiest parliament
Stupid people are driven by their inferiority complex to poison the culture with ideas that intelligence and education have drawbacks. In reality there are no drawbacks. Intelligent and educated people are as capable as others in all areas of activity and are vastly more capable in some of them. Politely tolerating insults like that and this cultural poisoning is the reason why trump is the president.
scotty79··on Serbia just elected the world's brainiest parliament
I heard it was retired because it had no military use unlike Uranium that is dual use.
