sdave··on What's SAP, and why's it worth $163B? (2020)
Someone would claim to implement sap over a weekend !
sdave··on Ask HN: What (almost) company sinking engineering mistakes have you witnessed?
1st level of protection is by keeping your live production data & backup data in separate accounts.

(If 1 account gets compromised the other is still available)

Perhaps 2nd level is by using cloud specific features - such as AWS S3 Object locks (even owner can't delete the object till the retention period).

my 2cents

sdave··on Ask HN: What is one book you would recommend everyone to read?

Congrats to you as well! We have lots of courses in common. My most fav. were: HPC, AI4R, Simulation, AI for Ethics and ML4T

(Not the person u asked :-) )

Short answer = Yes. Learned a lot and some more. (but of course depends on what courses you end up taking).

In fact, its quite common to see alumni taking courses after they have graduated (case in point: many folks from my batch enrolled in the newly started DL class, just for the sake of learning).

I think UT Austin has a program as well. Might want to check with the alumni there.

Also, I would say - if you don't hurry through the program and take 1 course at a time, it's worth giving it a shot. You must start slow, gradually you would have an intuition of how to pace your life along with the studies.

Hope this helps & all the best.

Completed OMSCS in Fall 2020 - while working in a startup & raising young kid.

Was brutal, but worth it! Thanks to Georgia Tech. for creating this program!!

Yes, but it's unknown. And hence any meaningful estimation made using that prior means that it is based on an assumption, which may or may not hold.

sdave··on WSJ: "India Graduates Millions But Too Few Are Fit to Hire" - Yes, But .....
quite an excellent post. But very early enough I developed deep contempt for many of our teachers and chose to educate myself on my own. that would be true for most of us - self taught engineers we are. Also unlike in the US where there are many universities of top repute, in India we have either the IITs or NITs [wrt engineering] - and actual quality of education their is also isnt great [ well i can say about NITs].

sdave··on MIT Entrance exam (1869)
This is from IIT JEE 1999. If i remember this was one of the most difficult Math paper in those years.check out question 11 at the end , nice one. Trivia: Check out JEE 1998 paper on physics & try out subjective questions at the end.Boy was that paper hard.
sdave··on Ask HN: Best Philosophical Books?
"Siddhartha", "Steppenwolf" - by Herman Hesse.

"Atlas Shrugged" - by Ayn Rand.

"Mrityunjay" - by Sivaji savant (originally in marathi/hindi language.. based on the character of Karna from Mahabharata. Not very sure how good the english translation is though. The title means - he who has conquered Death.)

sdave··on Indian Students Compete for Plum Colleges
(w.r.t engineering..) Unlike in US , where you have many universities of repute & cutting edge research - in India we have only the IITs or at the next level perhaps the NITs(with quite a level of difference). And with millions of kids longing for that coveted seat in the iit , we have cut throat competition.Coaching for entrance exams has been a thriving industry in India.
sdave··on Ask HN: What are the best technologies you've worked with this year?
