seabombs··on MiniMax M3.1 Flash
I use DS-4.1-Flash a lot but find it often gets caught up in long thinking runs. The "But wait... Actually... Hmm..." type of thing. Even though the tok/s is good, it stills feels slow because of this. Same with 1017.

I use Opus 5.5 at work and it does this much less (I know, different classes). Maybe it is to be expected of the flash models.

seabombs··on Americans' social activity has steeply declined in the past 30 years
Semi-related, this story stuck with me about the university experience now vs in the 90s.

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2026-03-01/how-uni-life-has-chan...

By the end I felt so sorry for the young man they profiled, what an enormous life experience he largely misses out on.

seabombs··on She Also Found It at the Movies
I think it's my stage of life (40s with kid) where finding the time to watch a movie is often too hard. But reading the review is only a few minutes.
seabombs··on She Also Found It at the Movies
Highly likely we'll have different tastes, but the last two movies I watched were The Drama and Pillion. Greatly enjoyed them both.

Just a heads up, maybe don't watch Pillion with your parents/kids though...

seabombs··on She Also Found It at the Movies
I often enjoy reading movie reviews more than watching the movie they review, even when I do enjoy the movie.

I can't usually describe that well why I did or didn't like a movie, so it's fun when I read a review that does put into words how I felt about it. It gives me a deeper perspective on my own feelings about the movie.

Shout out to Vince Mancini, my personal go to film critic.

seabombs··on 'You Can See Everything' Review: Nathan Fielder's Doc About Elizabeth Holmes
Love everything Nathan Fielder does. The trailer is awesome.

seabombs··on Former OC actor Ben McKenzie on crusade to take down 'stupid' cryptocurrency
From the TRM methodology:

1. excludes proceeds from crime that originate in fiat and later transfer into crypto

2. exclude transfers to blockchain addresses that have not been attributed to illicit activity

3. excludes laundering of illicit crypto proceeds

While this seems reasonable to create a metric to compare YoY, I think it's very flawed to generate an absolute figure of illicit activity (or percentage of transaction volume).

seabombs··on I built a low-latency AI companion that plays Skyrim with me
I must say absolutely hilarious video. The "persona" of the dog is great. As someone who is generally pretty "keep your AI out of my art" this looks very fun to play. I can imagine this being cleverly integrated as a primary feature of a game (this must already be in the works). Ideally as a small model able to run locally alongside the game.

The moment where the dog is going on about "something foul in the air" as the player is attacked by a wolf ("F--- dude you could have warned me!") was great comedy.

seabombs··on Pacing model development in an era of cyber-critical capabilities
There are many more possibilities than that.

For example, OpenAI did not explicitly tell the model to hack HuggingFace, but "accidentally" left some context permitting (or not explicitly forbidding) certain tools and designing a poor sandbox to begin with. And what do you know, something happened.

The fact the Anthropic announced that their own model did basically the same thing within a couple of weeks does, to me, suggest their is a strong PR driver to all this.

seabombs··on Being ambitious and being a dad
Thanks for sharing! I remember thinking pre-kids mostly about how much work they would be but not really considering the joy they bring too. Like I knew they would, but vastly underestimated what effect that would have on my life.

I don't particularly regret any of my choices either, but knowing what I do now, would have chosen to have kids earlier in my life.

seabombs··on An Uncomplicated Man – A review of The Odyssey, directed by Christopher Nolan
I have almost no experience of archery and this annoyed me. So many close shots of Odysseus or other soldiers limply firing arrows that look like they'd barely make it five feet. But the next shot is a soldier getting barrelled off his feet by the force of it...
seabombs··on An Uncomplicated Man – A review of The Odyssey, directed by Christopher Nolan
Funny you mention LotR, coming out of the theatre after watching The Odyssey I thought "man, if only Peter Jackson had made this".

The landscapes were often gorgeous, but otherwise I thought it was all a bit dull unfortunately. Can only imagine what it would have been like if someone as detail-obsessed as PJ took it on.

seabombs··on GrapheneOS has been ported to Android 17
Ah that makes sense, thanks!
seabombs··on GrapheneOS has been ported to Android 17
I had been using LineageOS + microG for many years on my Pixel 3. I upgraded to a Pixel 8 and tried out GrapheneOS and the install experience was good, but I found some odd performance quirks - apps would be slow to install and run, downloads were slow, etc. Has anyone had similar issues?

Many apps that work on microG don't work in GrapheneOS without installing Google services anyway. I'm by no means across the full privacy implications, but my feeling is microG balances privacy and usability better for me.

I've since switched back to LineageOS+microG and am happy with it. Just my experience.

seabombs··on How the Atlas Network is shaping your life, even if you've never heard of it
There's a lot in here that I which I knew more about. You often hear about think tanks in Australia, and know they have political leanings but I wasn't aware of their precise nature. Shows my ignorance, but the movements between think tank boards and polticial appointments/the RBA are concerning.

The ABC does some truly fantastic political/economic reporting and analysis. This one is unusually long though, many of the author's (Gareth Hutchens) other articles are very good at distilling current economic trends and ideas into something understandable by lay people like me.

seabombs··on Kubernetes Ingress Nginx is retiring
I've been using Envoy Gateway in my homelab and have found it to be good for my modest needs (single node k3s cluster running on an old PC). I needed to configure the underlying EnvoyProxy so that it would listen on specific IPs provided by MetalLB, and their docs were good enough to find my way through that.

seabombs··on Steam Frame
Brilliant, I'm anxiously awaiting Australian pricing details (and release dates...) but could definitely seeing myself getting one of these as my first VR device, and the controller looks great too.

Being able to run games on device (and on ARM) is very cool, but I wonder if there is a cheaper/lighter/longer-battery-life version of this that is stream only? That's probably a better fit for me personally, I can't imagine not having a streaming device nearby when I would be using it.

Also hate to be picky, but looks like the frame controllers pair directly to the headset so maybe can't be used on their own? Would be nice to use them standalone too.

seabombs··on Nearly 90% of Windows Games Now Run on Linux
Proton/Wine is so good these days. Rarely have I had an issue running a game in the last 3 or 4 years. Sometimes EA/Ubisoft games that have their own special launchers don't work immediately, but ProtonDB and the Proton GitHub issues are great resources to get them going.

I remember when Cyberpunk 2077 came out it didn't work at first, but the Proton and Glorious Egg Roll devs got it running within a few days. Legends.

Even many games that support native linux run better under wine.

seabombs··on Advent of Code 2025: Number of puzzles reduce from 25 to 12 for the first time
Agree. It was getting in the way of me spending time with the family because I was distracted mulling over the puzzles.

I had thought last year that they could peak the difficulty around the middle of the month and bring it down a bit leading up to the 25th. But just finishing it earlier is probably better IMO.

seabombs··on AI and Home-Cooked Software
In my experience, the people using AI to make programs are still programmers. As in, they were trained in programming pre-AI. Managers are using AI to output manager stuff - documents, spreadsheets, etc. Similarly, marketers are using AI to write ad copy, not the marketing manager.

This may change as tools become better known or adopted. But for know the same people who did the job before are now using AI in that job.

FWIW, in my IRL experience, all the work output of those using AI for whatever task has been of poorer quality than without.

seabombs··on What’s New in PostgreSQL 18 – a Developer’s Perspective
It depends on the ORM, I know SQLAlchemy and Django ORM have some Postgres specific features (e.g. full text search/indexing). Some also let you extend the ORM to add your own features, or at least write raw SQL.

seabombs··on Zig's Lovely Syntax
I think the syntax highlighting for this could make it more readable. Make the leading `\\` a different color to the string content.
seabombs··on 'Starter packs' have played a central role in Bluesky's rapid growth
I deleted Twitter years ago as I was getting over it. When Bluesky starting take off it sounded like it was "Twitter but better", so I created an account. Felt just the same as Twitter. Lot's of rage bait, hot takes and tired jokes (in my opinion).

This was my default feed to be fair, if I'd taken the time to follow some good people maybe it would be better.
