seanvk··on Ubisoft co-founder Claude Guillemot has died in a plane crash
My Dad, a flight instructor, loves to remind me that there are bold pilots and old pilots. But there are no old bold pilots.

seanvk··on Some novelists are becoming video game writers – and vice-versa
Surprised that there was a lack of mention of Peter F. Hamilton's "Exodus: The Archimedes Engine" - video game "Exodus"

seanvk··on Why is the plural form of "house" not "hice"? (2016)
Remind me of how in modern Irish, a prefixed t- appears before vowels in masculine nominative singular nouns. It relates to Proto-Celtic masculine nominative singular article *sindos. The t- is what remains of the d and s from Proto-Celtic: an t-athair - the father an t-úll - the apple an t-each - the horse an t-ospidéal - the hospital

seanvk··on Gen Z workers are not tech-savvy in the workplace – and it’s a growing problem
I've a 18 year old and a 20 year old. Both boys in college. Despite my being an electrical engineer and they're having grown up in an environment where I've always had computers and electronics of various kinds about, they really never took an interest. They are both education majors and are taking up my wife's calling in teaching. Which is great, but they really don't have a clue about technology beyond Xbox/PS5/iPhone.

Calibre has supported this for some time now. Calibre is also available on Linux.

seanvk··on The effects of remote work on collaboration among information workers
I turned down a job offer in a principal engineering role at Microsoft because they were not allowing long term remote work.
seanvk··on PalmOS on Raspberry Pi
At Garmin, we ran PalmOS as a process on top of our RTOS. Fun times.
seanvk··on Great Vowel Shift
One interesting side effect of the Great Vowel Shift occurred when the word Uisce Beatha (Whisk(e)y) was anglicized twice. It was first brought in during the Elizabethan period from Ireland as "Whiskey" and later re-brought in as "Whisky" in Scotland. I've often wondered if that is the same reason behind surname anglicization of Ceallaigh to "Kelley" and later "Kelly".
seanvk··on USB 3.0* Radio Frequency Interference on 2.4 GHz Devices (2012)
I wonder if this can also interfere with Ant+?
seanvk··on I almost quit caffeine in one year
I drink 4 shots of espresso in a latte each morning. It calms me and helps me focus on my coding tasks as I sip it through the morning. I’ve never had issues stopping or from prolonged use. It’s a net benefit for me.
seanvk··on Sources: Google plans to eventually replace Duo with Meet
This is the way.
seanvk··on Alphabet in bid to buy Fitbit
My concern would stem from them attempting to replace the firmware with Android Wear. Because Android Wear is licenced they may feel pressure to use the same os so as not to upset licensees such that any improvements to AW on Fitbit gets shared. Or they may go the Nest route with custom firmware based on Fitbit. It will be interesting
seanvk··on Telling Whiskey from Whisky
The difference in spelling is due to the fact the word for Uisce Beatha was brought into the English language twice. Once from Irish Gaelic before the Great Vowel shift in English and a second time from Scots Gaelic after the shift.
seanvk··on Programmers: Before you turn 40, get a plan B (2009)
I'm 51, an electrical engineer who has migrated over time from ASIC design, to board design, to ASIC validation, to embedded software development, to team lead, development manager, back to IC as architect and enventually principal engineer for media, real-time software development. You shape your career. You make it happen. Find what you like, and go for it.
seanvk··on SerenityOS – a graphical Unix-like OS for x86, with 90s aesthetics
BeOS is another one that comes to mind.
seanvk··on Dank-selfhosted: automated deployment of email, web, DNS, XMPP, ZNC on OpenBSD
Hosted our family email server and Wordpress blog running OpenBSD on an Old World Mac using DynamiC DNS from home back in 2003. Specifically, I ranOpenBSD 3.4 on my G3 Blue & White with a Sonnet Tempo ATA 133 PCI Card. That was about 15 years ago. I was self-hosting. :-)
seanvk··on Why you should not use Google Cloud
I think it starts with ensuring that you have staff that actually review an action before it takes place. Relying on automation can be catastrophic for someone like OP.
seanvk··on A growing number of philosophers are conducting experiments to test arguments
I must confess the title made me think about Monty Python skits: Philosopher Competition

seanvk··on Apple Music on Track to Overtake Spotify in U.S. Subscribers
Spotify is available via Discord, Xbox, and Playstation. The diversity of clients is key for me. Apple Music has at most what an Android App?
seanvk··on 80's kids started programming at an earlier age than today's millennials
Thanks to my trusty Atari 800 in 1981 I learned to program through magazine articles and books and experimenting with code at home. It was a great experience.
seanvk··on What was it like to self-learn programming before Stack Overflow? (2016)
I taught myself to program in Atari Basic on an Atari 800 in 1981. I still remember the book and the way it described a for loop as an Oreo cookie. I remember subscribing to Byte magazine and typing in code snippets. Later had a 1050 disk driver, Gemini 10x printer with the Ape Face interface, and a Mips 300 baud modem. It was a glorious time, the dawn of a new age. I loved it.
seanvk··on Languages: Why we must save dying tongues (2014)
I find this ironic that all the comments (both for and against) are in English.
