I read somewhere that the French government was training golden eagles to attack drones. I've been out fishing and when I had a bite on my line a couple of eagles flew half a KM from a nearby bluff to come check out if I had snacks for them, birds are all about the snacks!
I always thought the quote "you're not the customer you're the product" originated with RMS, I went to look it up before I commented and it turns out it was Richard Serra and Carlota Fay Schoolman in 1973! Just as true now as then. https://quoteinvestigator.com/2017/07/16/product/
There's much more about humans then there is writing about them, a lot of cultures with oral histories, a lot of nuance in behavior we take for granted, can it all be digitized?
I appreciate it, I don't even own any iProducts but I find it interesting to see what phrases or words are considered for censorship from a mainstream mega corp.
Apparently it won't autocomplete cunning linguist, but it doesn't block master debater so half of that Austin powers joke (surely borrowed from an earlier comedian) will still autocomplete. Groovy baby yeah!
I like matrix, its like the new IRC for almost real time developer chat, I also do this via Discord but I'd prefer an open alternative. If you have experience running a matrix server do you find the data storage an issue? It sounded like if you federate and join the bigger channels you can balloon your storage pretty fast.
Since discord announced that they would be scanning ID a lot of alternatives have sprung up, chatto and Armada are both looking promising as alternatives, plus the chatto vibed marketing materials on their Dev chat gave me a laugh the other week!
I think the real issue is where is the space for the truly seperated bike lanes? I've personally experienced the new segregated lanes as a distinct regular threat to my safety as a cyclist, I was safer before the lanes were put in (at great tax payer cost and local businesses griping about less parking space) I'm in a smaller city now and they're spending a lot of money they don't have making these segregated lanes, creating the same problem all over again and making the driving feel claustrophobic to boot! I understand making a road feel less safe, or too narrow is a strategy to calm traffic down, but the old roads were just short of two lanes wide and felt quite safe in comparison. The worst spots in Vancouver aside from the dunsmiur upgrade I was referring to above are also bike corridors, a round about may slow a car down but for a 2 wheeler it does not, it's still not safe for the bike as cars try to cross or turn onto the bike lane, it truly is an all or nothing, I felt safer biking in raw Broadway or grandville street traffic then the adjacent mixed traffic bike corridors.
Yes I'd rather ride in traffic then be seperate, when I used to commute in Vancouver cars have a convoluted sign saying they are to yeald to bikes on right turn, or no right turn at all and I would get 'right hooked' at least once a week, I always had my eye out and would stop before getting pasted, but yelling at a driver who's in the wrong probably isn't helping them be aware of what they're doing wrong, I'm just 'yet another angry cyclist' since I'm upset they broke the rules and tried to kill me with their 4000lb+ metal brick!
So many boxes to tick, and with a company culture that leans towards box ticking and apathy (regulatory checklists without the extra checkbox “is that last checkbox a real checkbox" then you have to talk to the nerd department who's too busy for your stupid questions... Etc. Etc.) What can we expect? I'm disappointed in Lenovo for this, but my own apathy expects no one will be held accountable!
Finding an easy solution to making spare money keep up with inflation+ is the problem. The default investment solution is to put it into some mixed fund, but if you drill into the moral implication of that who knows what clownery I'm funding. How can I invest and have a better then average expectation that the money won't fund something corrupt.
Walk softly and carry a big EMI interference device! I'm waiting for the sci-fi utopia where the AI AR glasses replace all the physical ads with something nicer, ublock: eyes
You gotta get to the Fortune 10 before the real leverage kicks in! On the other hand the fortune 200 company I worked for briefly had many signs of deep seated corruption. I couldn't stick around for a multitude of reasons, but the "follow the rules wink wink" attitude was flabbergasting, I'm sour on publicly traded companies ever since, how do you know you're not investing in Space Balls?
My new security through obscurity is to collect esoteric modern LLM written software, like this sweet gem of a terminal editor written in fortran: https://shithub.sh/fortrangoingonforty/facsimile
First you take your Blendtech and "will it blend" your engineers, then upload the result to the cloud inside what is called an S3 bucket (don't forget to set access permissions on your buckets kids!) to be digested by the clankers, sit back and profit!
Dark humor aside I think disconnecting a bunch of problem solvers from their computing equipment could really enhance the world, putting that analytical power into the world in person could move a lot of cogs, rather then marshalling JSON.
Adults who introduced me to tech when a i586 class computer was snazy were preaching about tracking on the internet and modding host files, complaining about doubleclick etc. The internet would be a much nicer place if everyone installed ublock: oragin and woke up to how yucky most ads and ad tactics are, instead we spend our time looking forward to the ads during the superbowl™
Thirty something years ago I got access to my first TV with rabbit ears, my kids have access to a lot more productive and informative content then I did, it's just the other 99.9995% of the internet I worry about. I believe in people highlighting the good stuff and denouncing the bad while keeping the door open for the slop and the haters, how do you know what's good without some bad to compare it to?
As an aside I worked in a drug users support center as an IT admin for a few months in my 20's, I don't feel like I have any insight into actual crack, other then Ewan McGregor said it best when he says choose life.
Setting boundaries is also part of parenting, is "the crack machine isn't despencing right now" better or worse then "time to take a break from the crack machine" I know putting a foot down can be hard, but I'd argue that it's good to practice on low stakes stuff like a show.
Another angle on this is the tope that curriculum is so out of date your AI completed assignment may be ahead of the class subject matter. The real teacher is is having a motivation or need to do something and learning about what you need to learn to get the goal accomplished, AI can be a great companion for that journey, weeding out the sycophantic slop and getting to truth is the new challenge. There are a lot of elements to school that discourage curiosity (asking a stupid question in front of class) or being picked on for being a keener or other anti-intellectual "cool kid" mentalities. In the end we need to make the line between learning and success more obvious for young people, maybe that doesn't work when the definition of success includes fitting into a burocracy and letting the singing key be "4".
We have a Canadian Constitution and the Charter of rights and freedoms, section 8 covers search and privacy, it even looks like a warrant is needed for messages just laying around a server https://www.canlii.org/en/ca/scc/doc/2013/2013scc16/2013scc1... but this bill aims to put a harpoon through our charter rights!
