shellfishgene··on CNC Stone Carving
The Sagrada Família is a "recently" built cathedral, and I'd say is on a similar level as a Gothic cathedral. So modern society is not necessarily incapable of similar feats.
shellfishgene··on CNC Stone Carving
Wow, the monks are not messing around either, they built a full monastery with cathedral and all in gothic style! https://newmountcarmelfoundation.org/building-a-mountain-mon...
shellfishgene··on Airbnb bans making guests do dishes and take out the trash
I'd prefer not to wash sheets of course, but also because I wouldn't trust previous guests to acually do it instead of just shaking the sheets out and putting them back.
shellfishgene··on 90% of US working hours are spent on tasks not covered well by AI benchmarks
It seems in China hotels commonly have robots deliver room service meals. I guess it makes sense, the building is not too hard to navigate for a robot, and it would take a worker 3+ minutes for each delivery. I thought it was maybe a gimmick, but it seems >30% of hotels have them now.

shellfishgene··on Donaldson Futuro House in Idyllwild, California, USA
Don't people build all kinds of tiny houses and live in them? How does that work with building codes?
shellfishgene··on Solar panels that plug into your wall
Apparently the anti-islanding features in the inverters prevent this kind of situation. They need several minutes of clean power to start back up, and do other checks.
shellfishgene··on What driving across Europe costs in tolls, vignettes, bridges and fuel
The Denmark to Sweden bridges are less expensive if you pay a yearly fee, it's usually worth it even if you only cross two times.

However it's not straight forward to figure out the optimal way to get from say Hamburg to Gothenburg. You can take the short ferry from Fehmarn to Rodby, and then take the bridges. Or you can drive all the way via Odense and the bridges. Or you can drive to northern Denmark and take the ferry from Fredrickshavn over. Or you can go to Kiel and take the overnight ferry straight to Gothenburg, which is expensive but you can sleep all the way. Then there is the Travemünde-Trelleborg ferry which could also be an option...

shellfishgene··on The technology to eradicate mosquito-borne disease exists
The Wolbachia bacteria already infect a majority of insect species and are widespread. They are not "mutated" in the sense that they are lab created, but occur naturally. Birds eat infected insects every day, and so do you probably every now and then by accident...
shellfishgene··on The technology to eradicate mosquito-borne disease exists
There is nothing about gene drives in the article, just lethal gene and wolbachia. These would necessitate continued release to some extent.
shellfishgene··on The technology to eradicate mosquito-borne disease exists
It is possible to release large numbers, this is how the older sterile insect technique works. It requires large facilities that can breed millions of insects that are then released, often from airplanes. It's just a question of money and developing an efficient breeding system.
shellfishgene··on The technology to eradicate mosquito-borne disease exists
The parasite will also evolve to maintain infection, otherwise parasites would not exist...
shellfishgene··on Everybody’s home. No one’s coming over
I mean, there is a sliding scale what "hosting someone" means. Most of this thread seems to assume classic dinner parties where you prepare all the food for the people, and they may include aquintances.

We often host a group of good friends, and it's more like a potluck. Brunch is especially easy, as everyone can bring some random dish and there is little coordination necessary. It's also pretty cheap, we don't really spend much more money than we would on regular breakfast. Dinner may be a bit more expensive as we usually do the main (meat) dish.

As they're all good friends we don't have to prepare the place either, they don't care when it's a bit messy. We're lucky to have a big place, but every now and then also go to other friends where people have to sit on the floor due to lack of chairs when there's more than 8 invited. It's fine (and I'm in my 40s, it's not a bunch of college kids).

shellfishgene··on Phyllotaxis: An audio-reactive LED display
I find it's pretty easy to come up with lighting projects like this, but to make it actually look high quality with a good finish is quite hard.
shellfishgene··on Show HN: An e-ink frame that hears birds and draws them as 1800s illustrations
You can sometimes find old Nooks for cheap and they can be rooted to display static images, but it's not elegant.

Probably BirdNet, but Google also has an equivalent model now called Perch. https://birdnet.cornell.edu/
shellfishgene··on Hitachi launches CO2 heat pump water heaters with solar-friendly tariff controls
It's just so the cold water pipes sit in a pool of warm water. https://www.meanderhr.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/HXdrain...

This is even simpler: https://warmduscher.de/produkt/warmduscher-original/

shellfishgene··on Hitachi launches CO2 heat pump water heaters with solar-friendly tariff controls
That does exist. Simple versions just have a large, deep drain with coils the cold water runs through. Fancier ones have a proper heat exchanger next to the shower (requires a pump) or in the basement. Water sanitation rules probably make it non trivial to get a design certified.
shellfishgene··on The Navier–Stokes Millennium Prize Problem
What's missing from the story I think is the part about "...then had a breakthrough on August 15th. The mathematical rumour mill kicked into gear...". If only the two of them were working on the problem in secret, how did their breakthrough become a rumor?
shellfishgene··on GamersNexus and LG: Or why rooting your TV is a bad idea
I was also a bit disappointed with the video. I don't usually watch the channel, but the previous video on LG with the McAfee thing was good. This one, well it has important points and exposes some very valid concerns. However I mostly agree with the linked article, it does not properly spell out what they actually can prove, and what's just conjecture. The video gets lauded as investigative journalism, I think the technical details are important to get right and make clear to non-tech people. A normal consumer would have no idea how to really judge the danger to their privacy after watching this, they'd come away thinking that for sure someone can listen in on their living room.
shellfishgene··on Qantas Airbus A380 engine failure in 2010 (2023)
I like to sit away from the wings to have a better view out the window, but not sitting in the fragment spread cone is probably also a good idea ;)
shellfishgene··on Domestic cats kill 1.3–4.0B birds and 6.3–22.3B mammals annually
I think the majority of pet cats live in cities and suburan settings, which are anyway highly artificial ecosystems. Also, as noted in another comment already, birds are fed in the same areas also, and provided nesting boxes, which probably increases numbers (or rather the carrying capacity) quite a bit. Studies seem to show that diversity has gone down, but biomass has even gone up a bit over 50 years [1]. The loss of species is apparently also related to removal of old buildings and modern ones lacking spaces to breed for birds like sparrows and swifts, and removal of landscape features that specialists depend on. Maybe cats play a role though.

The linked article says 90% of the mortality is caused by un-owned cats. I'd imagine that feral cats just replace wild cats in Europe, and thus do exist in the ecosystem with negative feedback (if they are not fed). Not sure about North America, as there is not really a small wild cat species I think?

shellfishgene··on Bomb fishing is wreaking havoc on Indonesia's coral reefs
Usually everyone in the fishing villages knows who does it. Often it's not the same people all the time: Individuals may need a larger amount of money than they can get from normal fishing, due to illness of a family member, or necessary repairs to a motorbike they rely on, etc. In a closely knit community you would not report your friend, especially knowing he did it out of desperation.

As far as I know these are not usually larger boats with captains and workers, more single famlilies who own small craft.

shellfishgene··on Bomb fishing is wreaking havoc on Indonesia's coral reefs
Yeah, usually everyone in the local communities knows who is dynamite fishing. Doesn't mean they will rat out their neighbor, but education on how it hurts everyone is probably more effective in the long term.
shellfishgene··on How to Exist
It seems that at least for most women in those times every free minute was used to spin yarn, a job that was essentially never finished.

shellfishgene··on Back to Kagi
I like the assistant, but now with new fair use billing I run out after 2 weeks with the 25$/month plan. I guess the problem is not that Kagi is expensive but that the big providers subsidize plans more than Kagi could afford, so it seems expensive. Because I have to switch after the 2 weeks anyway I kinda stopped using Kagi assistant and will probably downgrade the plan.
shellfishgene··on Xiaomi-Robotics-1
And it shows the robot getting into something of a loop when trying to fold the white shorts. I wonder if someone pushed a button to get it out of that.
shellfishgene··on NotebookLM is now Gemini Notebook
Also enshittification is slowly starting. Yesterday I asked Gemini (in the Android app) for a recommendation for an app for sound recording. Instead of it answering I got a popup to allow Gemini access to open the app store (or something like that, I didn't allow it). When I declined it just stopped the conversation. It was actually hard to get it to just reply with a list of apps. And I have an AI subscription with Google!
shellfishgene··on Doctors die. It's not like the rest of us, but it should be (2016)
What are the statistics for quality of life after CPR even if it saves the patients life? I think this is more what the article is about.
