shellwizard··on Solar power is becoming bigger than nuclear
Did they add a solar tax?
shellwizard··on Voxtral 3
It works really well and it's just a single static binary file (ffmpeg is needed on your $PATH), easier to use than ffsubsync which needs gcc to compile random stuff, and that stopped working randomly
shellwizard··on Voxtral 3
Sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that
shellwizard··on I turned my unused Kindle into a photo frame with GPT-6 Astra
Inkjet printers and coffee pods machines are other home oriented devices that are normally sold at a loss where official consumables are crazy expensive
shellwizard··on Getting old Macromedia Director Games to run on modern Hardware
The scummvm project has been working on porting most of the director games onto it. You can track its current status here:

shellwizard··on Solving Factorio Quality
I've tried to get into Factorio multiple times because I really love 2D isometric games, but the learning curve is incredibly steep. In my opinion, franchises like the original Command & Conquer were much more accessible for non-hardcore gamers like myself. Factorio feels less like a game and more like managing a complex software architecture.
shellwizard··on PipePipe: NewPipe hard fork implementing SponsorBlock
Also newpipe let you create a playlist of videos and only play the audio track in the background or play a given video in the background
shellwizard··on Used ThinkPad Buyer's Guide (2019)
I used to have that similar T470 laptop 5 years ago and it worked really nice. Given that it was company owned, it came out with Windows 10 enterprise, but never felt it underperforming.

It's hard to come by that gnome is slower than windows 10

shellwizard··on TiVo to charge money for skipping commercials in your own recordings
You can use yt-dlp with sponsorblock timings directly [0] to get rid of all the sponsorship segments from the final video, no need to use it later via mpv.

shellwizard··on TiVo to charge money for skipping commercials in your own recordings
Or use tvheadend + comskip
shellwizard··on Nitter has more working instances than before the takedowns
I've got a simple redirect made in the redirector add-on for Firefox and Chrome. X.com -> random nitter instance
shellwizard··on IBM Bob
They left the consumer market decades ago, as you mentioned, but they've been thriving in the enterprise and government sectors.

They have been expanding their portfolio through acquisitions: Red Hat, HashiCorp, Confluent...

shellwizard··on IBM Bob
Not an IBMer, but IBM MQ and Sterling Connect:Direct are both solid, I use them daily and they work wonderfully, although they can be a real bitch to set up and use in certain scenarios.
shellwizard··on Fastpotify
Have they replicated 1:1 Spotify's UX in Amazon music finally? I was a user 7 years ago and their Android app back then sucked, big time.
shellwizard··on Show HN: OpenTIE and OpenXWA, Modern Ports of Tie Fighter and X-Wing Alliance
Although it's already 20 years old and not very recent, have you tried Freelancer?
shellwizard··on Why some US restaurants are banning tips
Since COVID many restaurants (in Spain at least) no longer offer you a menu, you can view it via a QR code that there's on every table.

Also, those times depend on the place and location. The ones I've been lately were pretty fast

shellwizard··on Ntfy – open-source Push to Mobile
I used them for some time but their Android app used to drain my battery fast, so I moved on onto a pay-once use forever app (pushover), that works great on my phone, and that supports all of the features that I need for push notifications
shellwizard··on AI Generated 3D Models Flood Market, but Almost No One Is Buying Them
Has anyone really ever bought a STL (I assume) model? It's like WinRAR, does anyone ever buy a license?
shellwizard··on Ask HN: DeepSeek Alternatives
While it's not yet clear what the price increase will be, nor there's still a given date for the price surge, it's good to have a plan B. For now you can keep using it and see how the market evolves in the future. Have you checked r/deepsek?
shellwizard··on DeepSeek V4 Flash 0731: Is It Cheaper to Run It at Home or Pay per Token?
Upcoming price hike in the following days (no ETA yet):

shellwizard··on Show HN: Pokémon Emerald Ported to Raspberry Pi Pico 2
Hasn't it received a C&D from Nintendo yet?
shellwizard··on 3D Pinball for Windows (1995)
I also liked a lot pinball illusions, it had great music, graphics and gameplay. Given that it was created by Dice, the studio that years later created the Battlefield franchise
shellwizard··on Show HN: Chiptune Radio
I was able to extract the audio URL track via yt-dlp. Ifyou also add ffmpeg, a FIFO and soco-cli in the mix I was able to play it back on my Sonos speaker, although I had to jump a lot of hoops to curb the HLS stream into a standard shoutcast/icecast URL stream. All of that to end into a bland chiptunes radio, not worth all that effort
shellwizard··on Europe's company websites are mostly served by US vendors
There are not many big vendors that are EU first apart from SAP, SuSE and a handful more. Nothing similar to what MS, IBM, Google, Intel, AMD , Nvidia or Meta provide.
shellwizard··on Ditching Vagrant: VMs with KVM and Virsh on Debian
Have you tried distrobox/toolbox instead of having to spin up VMs? Also microvm looks nice
shellwizard··on Explanation of everything you can see in htop/top on Linux (2019)
There's intel_gpu_top for Intel iGPUs, although it's very limited and not a great UX
shellwizard··on Explanation of everything you can see in htop/top on Linux (2019)
I know it from some AIX machines that we have at job, also topas comes to mind
shellwizard··on Podman v6.0.0
Have you tried podlet[0]? Not entirely sure if it's compatible with podman v6 [0] https://github.com/containers/podlet
