shidoshi··on Gurus of 90s Web Design: Zeldman, Siegel, Nielsen
Yeah, strong agree here. Nielsen brought a certain weight of rigor to the debate back in those days which made sense to the way I wanted to think about web design as an engineer. I don't really think there's a "winner" or "most right" person amongst the trio, but Nielsen's ethos appealed to me more than the others mentioned.
shidoshi··on Block YouTube ads on AppleTV by decrypting and stripping ads from Profobuf
Lots of social commentary here, but I'd just note you're one mad lad. This is a great writeup and a nifty bit of sleuthing. I found it enjoyable to read.
shidoshi··on A Practical Guide to Running Local LLMs
I use them to make legal contract review less toilsome, but I suppose that's a hyper-specific endeavor.
shidoshi··on Mathematical Foundations of Reinforcement Learning
Amazing resource. Highly recommended for both content and approachability.
shidoshi··on OpenDAW – a new holistic exploration of music creation inside the browser
Got a little beat going with it, but the lack of VSTs and fine-grained control will be limiting in the long run. It's a super cool in-browser demo though. Overall, I'm very positive on the efforts.
shidoshi··on AI Flame Graphs
I can imagine Nelson and other Anthropic engineers jumping for joy at this release.
shidoshi··on Pg_analytics has switched to PostgreSQL license
Nice seeing you guys on the front page. New York can't stop, won't stop.
shidoshi··on Furnace – the biggest multi-system chiptune tracker ever made
Lots of comments herein cover things I would otherwise post, so I'll just say this is great fun. Love that it's FOSS. Now, everyone go make some music!
shidoshi··on The Stainless SDK Generator
Congrats, folks.
shidoshi··on Implement DNS in a Weekend
Julia is the best ever.
shidoshi··on Is infinity an odd or even number? (2011)
This account discrete maths. Bravo!
shidoshi··on Nintendo Is Taking Down My Videos [video]
Yeah, this is mostly correct. Source: worked there for 9 years.
shidoshi··on I use cheap notebooks
Muji notepads (if you're close to a Muji) have the distinction of being both reasonably priced and nice to look at IMHO. They also have a lovely selection of writing instruments of all types.
shidoshi··on Oxy is Cloudflare's Rust-based next generation proxy framework
Will be interested to see why I would use this instead of Envoy or similar FOSS. One obvious thing would be giving the operational work to Cloudflare instead of doing it myself, but beyond that it reads like "we built an internal thing in Rust."

Tokio has won.
shidoshi··on Chemicals released during wildfires in Australia damaged the ozone layer
These are amazing.
shidoshi··on We're creating a new top-level product group at Meta focused on generative AI
Productizing FAIR output, or is that too reductive?
shidoshi··on Is Seattle a 15-minute city? It depends on where you want to walk
The QA 7-way is nightmare fuel. I hate it. I hate going through it every-single-time I'm forced to.
shidoshi··on Show HN: Piano Chord Player
This was fun. Really dig the arpeggiator.
shidoshi··on Monkey.org
Morning, folks. Shidoshi@ (almost everywhere, including Monkey) here. This was quite funny to wake up to. I did ping Dug, Dave, and Jim this morning, so maybe one of them will drop in and give a history lesson.

If any of you are looking to join Niels and me at Stripe, do please drop me a note.

shidoshi··on Assertions in Production Code? (2008)
pp. 76-77 of Ousterhout's "A Philosophy of Software Design" talk about the issues with boilerplate try-catch. He basically does not approve, as they make readability suffer and often do not do what they advertise (truly catch errors.) I don't know how he would feel about production assertions, but I'm guessing he would buy into it if it helps reduce complexity. In the sense of finding remedies to troublesome bugs--which will occur.
shidoshi··on Why Doesn’t Silicon Valley Hire Black Coders?
This article was originally published in 2016, and HN had a lot to say then as well https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=10944966
shidoshi··on Visual Studio App Center
This is nifty, and congrats to the M$ teams for continuing to kill it on the announcements (right before re:Invent.) Will this service also support soft push via services like AirWatch for private/non-store deployments?
shidoshi··on Introducing Oculus Go, Plus Santa Cruz Updates
In my neighborhood, and I keep meaning to stop in. I just keep walking by because I am unsure what they are selling.
shidoshi··on Japanese Vending Machines at Night Juxtaposed with a Wintry Hokkaido Landscape
Suica, Pasmo and the like are all contactless SCs. The Wikipedia page is a good start, and you can go deeper from there: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suica
shidoshi··on Sears's History Predicts Almost Everything Amazon's Doing
Muji in Japan does this. I would not be surprised if there's at least one 6-pager in Day One on housing in some shape or form.
shidoshi··on SoundCloud is here to stay
I actually don't see that as a bad concept. It might make Amazon/Twitch curious about how they might do the same, but competition is good.
shidoshi··on Linux Load Averages: Solving the Mystery
What samstave said... but, I'll buy the beer.
shidoshi··on On Conference Speaking
Lots of "I give a lot of talk" folks on here. I'm a listener, and I just want to thank all of you. Being brave and sharing your knowledge to help empower others is no small thing. So, again, thank you.
shidoshi··on At Google, an Employee-Run Email List Tracks Harassment and Bias Complaints
Yes, the prevalence of studies that report averages are what you are referencing--though you don't provide any. But, there are plenty of anecdotes (e.g. the several Google Sheets pay experiments folks have run) showing disparity. I am a sample of one, but I have seen this disparity--and, worked to fix it--with folks I've managed over the years as well. So, I do not agree with absolutes like "that is not the case."
