shikshake··on A farewell to Arc browser
I really enjoyed using arc years ago. But I also remember asking the devs, both on a livestream and over email, what their plan was to build a sustainable business. They obviously had no answer because their real plan was to entice users to join while surviving on VC funding, then eventually sell user data or squeeze value out of them some other way. Left a bad taste in my mouth so I stopped using their products.

Just another example of a cancerous VC-backed business.

shikshake··on When did Google get so weird?
Sorry but that’s a very naive mindset. These are companies run by verified liars with billions of invested dollars. They don’t believe in anything except extracting labor and capital to make billions more, and they will say whatever they need to say to achieve those goals. Any “belief” they may have had went out the window the moment they accepted VC money.

A third option is to air your grievances on that same public space and find people who feel similarly and care enough to raise their voice, and hopefully spread awareness and affect change. Which is also totally valid and what these users are doing.
shikshake··on Highest-ever ocean temperature measured as powerful El Niño forms
Get politically involved, vote and and volunteer for local pro-climate candidates. Talk about and promote public transport, cycling, better zoning and infrastructure etc. People underestimate the power of local politics.

On a macro scale all you can really do is vote for national level candidates that care about these issues. Luckily it’s not hard to see which ones do and which ones don’t.

shikshake··on Pixel Watch 5
I tried it a few years ago and it was just annoying enough that I went back to my phone after a couple weeks. If you search online I’m sure you can find write ups from people who tried this out.
shikshake··on Grok Bot
Humans can take accountability for mistakes, and there are systems in place to help you if they don’t.
shikshake··on Mir Books – Books from the Soviet Era
Hackernews thrives on users confidently making claims based on their own limited perspective and providing next to no reasoning or evidence.
shikshake··on What to learn to be a graphics programmer
Sounds like great growth opportunities. This is my first job and I work in a small studio, I really wish I had mentorship and training like that.
shikshake··on What to learn to be a graphics programmer
If you're asking for video games/creative studios, unfortunately my best advice is have good connections and a strong public portfolio. Both of these are solvable problems.

Your skills aren't immediately applicable to a tech artist role. You need to learn about the graphics pipeline (high-level) and how 3D models and particle effects are rendered behind the scenes, plus knowing specific tricks for rendering different common visual effects. You can learn all of this from free online resources.

shikshake··on What to learn to be a graphics programmer
There’s a separate role that is more along the lines of what you’re saying, called a Technical Artist (that’s what I do)

I think graphics programmers benefit from having an artistic mindset, but they usually work so low level that it isn’t necessary to be successful.

shikshake··on The disappearance of Japan's animators
I did not know they made an anime of The Summer Hikaru Died. The manga was amazing, I need to check out how they adapted it.
shikshake··on The disappearance of Japan's animators
The same ratio of garbage to quality was available back then, there just wasn’t the same level of exposure to the range of output so the worst ones faded into history.
shikshake··on The Coming Loop
To me there’s usually an undercurrent of manic zeal that makes them feel that way.

shikshake··on Project Hail Mary – Stellar Navigation Chart
I agree with your sentiment but this is not the place to complain about a movie you dislike. OP is showing off a project they made, trying to make them feel bad about liking a movie is tactless and reflects poorly on you.
shikshake··on Meta's New Reality: Record High Profits. Record Low Morale
Hear hear. I feel lucky to have a stable job in education even if I make less than my big tech colleagues.
shikshake··on A Love Letter to 'Girl Games'
Who are your favorite game designers that are women?
shikshake··on Migrating to the EU
Virtue signaling is the worst interpretation you can have of someone attempting to do better. If someone’s trying to make a small impact on the world, shouldn’t you encourage them instead of making fun and claiming they’re just doing it for looks?
shikshake··on An AI Agent Published a Hit Piece on Me – The Operator Came Forward
Sounds like you’re projecting a bit. I had no context of the situation before reading the apology and it felt very self-absorbed to me as well.
shikshake··on Pebble Production: February Update
I believe you can see that stuff on the Pebble app but you can't sync with Apple health. See this previous pebble blog post: https://ericmigi.com/blog/apple-restricts-pebble-from-being-...
shikshake··on Sizing chaos
I’d argue this problem is more important than most of the tech articles on this site. Having well-fitted clothing is a massive quality of life improvement.
shikshake··on Adventure Game Studio: OSS software for creating adventure games
The Blackwell series was one of my first video game loves. The final game made me cry
shikshake··on Gaussian Splatting – A$AP Rocky "Helicopter" music video
So am I, but I don’t use it as an excuse to put down other’s interests.
shikshake··on Palantir, Meta, OpenAI Execs Appointed Lieutenant Colonels in US Army (2025)
To me it reads the other way around, the big money folks in the tech sector are pushing their influence into the military.
shikshake··on Gaussian Splatting – A$AP Rocky "Helicopter" music video
Perfect comment, but it’s very funny to me that you even needed to say it. Some folks on here talk like moon people who have never met humans before.

shikshake··on Software engineers should be a little bit cynical
Your comment really resonates with me, I’m in a similar position though much more junior. My colleagues in tech can’t fathom that I actively choose to stay where I am and make 50% of their salary.

I’ve found talking about ethics and moral responsibility with people working in big tech is futile and frustrating. Almost everyone takes it as a personal attack though I never hold anyone else to my moral standards.

shikshake··on Games: No sex, please. we're credit card companies
I doubt it's ethics, but could payment processors be feeling pressure from political entities who are threatening policy action under the guise of ethics and morality? With the current administration, groups like this would have no trouble finding political backing.
shikshake··on The Last of Us Part II – Seattle Locations Tour
It really wasn't, it just had a lesbian protagonist. There are still many prominent sympathetic male characters with agency. Plenty of women enjoy action movies targeted towards men, I always find it confusing when men feel they can't enjoy media with a woman in it.
shikshake··on The Last of Us Part II – Seattle Locations Tour
The Last of Us Part II is an incredible experience, I'm happy there's still a thriving fan community doing stuff like this. I appreciate how detailed this guide is, when I visit Seattle I'll definitely try it out.
