shrewduser··on Meta's Llama 3.1 can recall 42 percent of the first Harry Potter book
maybe if you re wrote it from memory.
shrewduser··on Human coders are still better than LLMs
This doesn't surprise me, i find LLM's are really good at interpolating and translating. so if i made up a language and gave it the rules and asked it to translate i wouldn't expect it to be bad at it.
shrewduser··on Human coders are still better than LLMs
i wish i could do that in an interview.
shrewduser··on LLMs get lost in multi-turn conversation
I have very limited experience with llms but i've always thought of it as a compounding errors problem, once you get a small error early on it can compound and go completely off track later.
shrewduser··on Gemini Robotics brings AI into the physical world
Google make almost all their money from search, an extremely lucrative property, which is under threat from all the new ai players.

So while they have a bunch of cool tech on the possibility horizon the only thing the market cares about is the ability to make money and there's some uncertainty on that front.

shrewduser··on Intel announces Arc B-series "Battlemage" discrete graphics with Linux support
these are the entry level cards, i imagine the coming higher end variants will have the option of much more ram.
shrewduser··on Priced out of home ownership
Sorry what? Shelter is a necessity for survival.

Is it communism to not allow people to buy up all the water supplies and sell it back to you at an extortionate rate?

The truth about the housing market is that it's not a free market anyway it's controlled by special interests, bad laws, zoning, local nimbys and councils the list goes on.

shrewduser··on Quake on an FPGA (MRISC32 CPU) [video]
surely we could already do 1khz displays with OLED, but i assumed that the bandwidth required to meet that wouldn't be available on any of todays display outputs.
shrewduser··on Twitch to Cut 500 Employees, About 35% of Staff
Any idea why south korea is particularly cost prohibitive? i would assume twitch would be very keen to have a presence there.

the license doesn't transfer if the company is bought.
shrewduser··on Meta’s Reality Labs prototype hardware

shrewduser··on Senate Bill to Ban TikTok
tit for tat is the only way free trade is enforced...
shrewduser··on Rand Paul blocks the fast-tracking of TikTok ban
so what, we can't ban any apps that allow you to send a message or are considered social in some way?
shrewduser··on Silicon Valley Learns to Love Socialism for the Rich
In a just world these people would be stripped of everything they own.
shrewduser··on I wanted to see James Taylor, but didn't know it would cost $5k
yeah i was thinking the same thing, at the very least it's not designed with accessibility in mind and could easily trick people who are more vision impaired.
shrewduser··on An AI lawyer was set to argue in court – real lawyers shut it down
i feel like lawyers will be able to legally keep AI out of their field for a while yet. they have the tools at their disposal to do so and a huge incentive.

other fields like journalism not so much.

shrewduser··on ByteDance confirmed it used TikTok to monitor journalists’ physical location
The west doesn't just give everyone unlimited market access, especially if it's not reciprocated.
shrewduser··on ByteDance confirmed it used TikTok to monitor journalists’ physical location
it is a national risk but i imagine there's also economic / trade grounds in the fact that china doesn't let american companies compete in their market.

I don't see any reason for it not to be in the purview of government.

shrewduser··on ByteDance confirmed it used TikTok to monitor journalists’ physical location
i mean only technically in name only.
shrewduser··on ByteDance confirmed it used TikTok to monitor journalists’ physical location
personally despite all that, it seems weird that western social network / tech companies aren't able to operate in china but the reverse is fine.
shrewduser··on I tried starting a manufacturing unit in India (2020)
it does sound a lot like a bribe to me.

man, hacker news is just not what it used to be.
shrewduser··on Apple’s ad business set to boom on the back of its own anti-tracking crackdown
That's missing the point, Apple owns the platform and are using that dominance to push people out while pushing themselves in.

Using your dominance in one industry like that could fall afoul of anti monopoly laws.

true or not, those statements would create that perception.
