shrx··on Rendering pretty sky in Around The World game
The light is also reflected from the Earth back into the sky, e.g. over bodies of water.
shrx··on Claude reveals ECDSA curve origins
A lesser model can supervise.
shrx··on Ubuntu 26.10 (Stonking Stingray) released
The silent forced replacement of deb packages with snaps during regular apt updates is pretty hostile, IMO.
shrx··on Creating a Garmin "MCP"
I'm not using it for sleep tracking so I can't comment on that. I mostly use it with Garmin Instinct 3 Solar for recording and exporting gpx tracks of my hikes and bicycle trips.
shrx··on Creating a Garmin "MCP"
I highly recommend GadgetBridge for anyone wanting to avoid Garmin's cloud services: https://gadgetbridge.org/
shrx··on California closed the Montana license plate loophole
> What if gun owners had to walk around wearing a huge plate with their gun registration number when they wanted to carry a gun?

Actually a very sensible proposition.

shrx··on Rate limits on GitLab.com are changing
Can you provide an example of this schema?
shrx··on Navier-Stokes – Tristan Buckmaster [pdf]
> "It is not the direction one arrives at in a few days by giving a model the problem statement."

Can they back up this statement somehow?

shrx··on RotaryCell: Making an unmodified rotary phone work over LTE with an ESP32-S3
We have a similarly converted rotary phone at my local astronomy club's observatory, used to receive visitors. It's driven by an arduino if I remember correctly. The main issue is that the sound quality of its built-in speaker is quite poor, especially compared to modern cell phone speakers we're used to nowadays, with a narrow frequency window and frequent echoes.
shrx··on Longest Straight Line Paths on Water or Land on the Earth (2018)
Wikipedia has an article listing some of the notable (walking) straight line missions: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Straight_line_mission

edit: and the article already notes this longest possible path from Portugal to China, citing a 2023 article: https://bigthink.com/strange-maps/these-are-the-worlds-longe...

shrx··on Longest Straight Line Paths on Water or Land on the Earth (2018)
> Figure 9: Longest Drivable Straight Line Path on Earth.

Walkable, maybe, but definitely not drivable (it crosses directly over the Alps, for example).

shrx··on Inception-style curved map for turn-by-turn directions
I realize I've been spoiled by finally having the ability to tailor almost anything to my exact personal preference. Related: https://vibingwithai.substack.com/p/software-for-one-how-vib... and the HN discussion, https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49096605
shrx··on Inception-style curved map for turn-by-turn directions
2D map would work the same way with my proposal. The "north is up" part is the issue for me, I'd like to have the rotation oriented in such a way that (the visible part of the path to) my destination is up.
shrx··on Inception-style curved map for turn-by-turn directions
Of course it could still have some maximum allowed rotation threshold.
shrx··on Inception-style curved map for turn-by-turn directions
>"up is direction of motion"

Yes, this is how it's currently implemented. My proposal is "up is the intersection of the path with the edge of the screen". Here's a mock comparison of the current behavior with my proposal: https://i.imgur.com/AmUnzfS.jpeg (The mocked perspective is wrong because I just cut out and rotated the image, but hopefully you get the idea)

This is also a problem with Google Maps navigation. It is always showing the perspective looking straight ahead of your current direction, even when you're approaching a sharp turn. Instead, the perspective should be along a vector connecting your current location with the point where the navigation's path crosses the edge of the display, pointing straight up.
shrx··on Decompiling a Nintendo 64 game in 84 days
Can you describe with a bit more detail how you're approaching the BIOS reverse engineering?
shrx··on Casio F-B100W-1A
https://gshock.casio.com/europe/products/mr-g/

The MR-G models are priced in the thousands.

shrx··on Black hole singularity is a surface not a point
Time is necessary for change, not existence.
shrx··on Coconut oil jet fuel matches kerosene's efficiency in engine tests
Maybe it's time to develop new sealing materials?

edit: thanks for the downvote. I should've said "Maybe it's time to _invest into developing_ new sealing materials?" ;)

shrx··on Asus Bike Booster
Do you feel the power is sufficient? It says it's only a 250 W motor. What is the battery range?
shrx··on Why does Opus 5 feel worse to work with?
Two caveats, one of which matters:
shrx··on Pixel Watch 5
My Garmin Instinct 3 Solar watch (which has a display) has a battery life measured in _weeks_.

Widely used in the EU, not just Germany.
shrx··on G'mic 4.0: Squaring the Pixel, Easier
Very happy that this framework is still in active development! It's invaluable for more advanced image manipulation in GIMP.
shrx··on Increasing the lifespan of a bulb makes it worse in every other way
The light spectrum they produce.
shrx··on The Fabled Flatbreads of Uzbekistan (2015)
Probbly a deliberate choice to distinguish it from its Indian sibling?
