shymaple··on Clinical trial of a prion disease drug candidate begins enrolling participants
What Sonia Vallabh and Eric Minikel have been working toward since her diagnosis in 2011 is truly inspiring. The drug candidate was developed by Anastasia Khvorova and her lab at UMass Chan Medical School, in collaboration with Vallabh, Minikel, and their research teams.

What makes this effort even more remarkable is their commitment to sharing the drug development process openly, including an IND filing that would typically remain confidential.

Whatever the eventual outcome( I’m optimistic) about the possibilities, the journey, the data, and the knowledge shared along the way will be valuable.

This is not just about developing a drug; it’s about making science more transparent, collaborative, and accessible for everyone working toward the same goal.

shymaple··on Climate change is strengthening El Niño, coral records suggest
Yes, I totally agree with you. I had the same experience, the coral cover has decreased significantly over the last 1–2 decade, and the EL Nino is just accelerating it.
shymaple··on Bioelectronics for the Public Good
Liked the melody, would love to know more about the work you are doing.
shymaple··on Plumbingjobs.org
Hey, this is a really cool idea! I’ve worked in the carpentry industry and our glass and aluminium shop used to do something similar to what your website is doing. People would come to us and share the work they needed done. Whenever a carpenter or worker came to us looking for work, we would share the available jobs, pricing, and details with them and connect them with the client free of cost. We mainly did this to help both parties find each other and get the work done. Because we were selling Glass and Aluminium and we earned many trusted clients and workers with this approach.

I’d love to suggest one thing: if you could create a text/WhatsApp alert system for temporary jobs, I’m sure you’d get more inflow. Most of these workers do not have an email but phone.

shymaple··on Engineered yeast for converting plastic and biomass compounds to food additives
Yes, you are correct. Waxworm saliva in combination with gut microbes can digest PE.
shymaple··on Engineered yeast for converting plastic and biomass compounds to food additives
Yes totally agree, not just the carbon dioxide but other by products too.
shymaple··on Engineered yeast for converting plastic and biomass compounds to food additives
With gut microbes handling the plastic degradation to proteins? :-D
shymaple··on Engineered yeast for converting plastic and biomass compounds to food additives
even if you decompose it, plants uses the same during their growth.
shymaple··on Engineered yeast for converting plastic and biomass compounds to food additives
Not exactly these set of microbes(you will need to find the process). These authors used engineered microbes on a plastic derived substrate and not the plastic it self(PET).

To make a fuel or food or other stuff out of it you need to define the microbes set(mixture). Almost every study claiming plastic to X follows hybrid pattern, they break the polymer into smaller molecules by depolymerization either thermally/chemically for polyolefins like PE/PP/PS, since no enzyme is known to break a C-C backbone; enzymatically for ester-linked plastics like PET/PU, via PETase-type enzymes). Then it goes to the fermentation process, resulting small molecules into lipids (most common), PHA, or specific chemicals.

Sometimes a consortium(Mixture of microbes) is used, with different microbes handling different fractions of the breakdown mixture. Any "protein from plastic" claim is the same logic, the depolymerized substrate is just feeding an yeast, and the protein is the yeast biomass itself, harvested and used crude or extracted.

True microbial degradation of intact plastic polymers, no pretreatment, organism doing all the work, is still a challenging task for biologist.

shymaple··on Screen viewing time from age 1 to 8 years and subsequent academic performance
thanks for sharing full text
shymaple··on Screen viewing time from age 1 to 8 years and subsequent academic performance
Yes you are correct, at age 1 screen time is not at all in your hand, it's your parents who has access to it.
shymaple··on Screen viewing time from age 1 to 8 years and subsequent academic performance
Directly mapping screen time with academic performance is difficult to correlate. Like the article shows that age 1 has the strongest association, but I feel at a very early age like 1, screen time is not in your(toddler's) hands and slowly, as age grows, kids become habitual. It like the impact is not linear.

Also, I think the type of content kids consume can tell us more about the performance, because IMO, long form content can have a different impact than short form.

It's an interesting study to follow and if anyone has access to the raw data, I would be really interested in looking into it.

shymaple··on Claude Code May–August 2026 weekly limits promotion
Yeah, this is going to matter for me. Most of my sessions are long scoping/architecture conversations rather than coding loops.
shymaple··on Just Show Me the Prompt
Actually, I started the same thing a few weeks ago. I feel your prompt is as good as your skills for whatever task you're performing.

And whenever someone says, "I'm trying this but Claude isn't working properly," I'm like, wait, what???? What did you say, Claude isn't working properly?? Let me see your prompt. And most of the time, the answer we find is in the prompt.

shymaple··on Ask HN: Anyone's Claude Code session finishing quickly from yesterday?
Yes, it happened to me too. Yesterday claude showed me that I had exhausted my weekly limit, so I tried to add new credits, paid, but still couldn't use it.

Surprisingly, it's working today. My weekly limit is supposed to reset in 11 hours from now, but it's working now.

shymaple··on Show HN: Roamr – a CLI that picks the best saved WiFi, and tells you why
Hey this is really a cool idea. I'd surely give it a try.
shymaple··on My astrophotography in the movie Project Hail Mary
Absolutely amazing Rod.

I could feel your excitement in the way you wrote this. And like you said, in a time dominated by CGI and AI, it’s refreshing to see people who still want to create things as real as possible. These experiences and the thinking behind them make the outcome far more meaningful.

Congratulations and best luck!

shymaple··on The Basic Laws of Human Stupidity (1987) [pdf]
IMO, Stupidity is like entropy and this randomness in our society seems to be increasing too. If we assume society is an ordered system (IF :-D ). So yes, stupidity seems to be on the rise. And the new fuel? unverified information on the internet.
shymaple··on [dead]
Because a country where you can move faster, goods, services, people, ideas has more economic energy. It’s not just about convenience. It’s about momentum. A delivery that takes 2 hours instead of 8, a person who can work 50 km away because of good roads, a farmer whose produce reaches the market in time, these things matter.
shymaple··on 30 minutes with a stranger
I have been talking to people online as well as in person and especially strangers. What I felt is, many only talk about work, and how they are doing well and all and it takes huge time to build trust with the person when it's online. While, in offline meet, you talk more about interest, hobbies or common things and build trust faster and usually they even share personal information easily because they trust you.
shymaple··on [dead]
Hey HN,

I've written a piece on why focusing solely on keywords in a resume might be missing the bigger picture. I argue that recruiters and HMs aren't just looking for buzzwords; they're trying to understand who you are and if you're a cultural fit for their team.

Curious to hear your thoughts on this.

shymaple··on Thank HN: My bootstrapped startup got acquired today
Awesome dude
shymaple··on Ask HN: What's the most life-changing blog post you've ever read?
It is difficult to choose a one blog post among all. But I feel there are few type of post which changed my thought process are blogs written by experts in the field. I love reading how they think about something whether its a computer program or science or cooking or hobby they have. Also more than just a blog I love reading author, if I like something about blog I go deep read their other blogs as well and if I feel the guy is worth following I just start reading their blogs and I do read repetitively.
shymaple··on Ask HN: How do people create those sleek looking demos for startups?
When I started creating demos for our startup, I started with Shotcut, it is pretty awesome and simple to start with. VN editor is also a good option if you are just starting your journey. And combine your screen recording with some animations and images. Hope this may help you.
shymaple··on Enzymes open new path to universal donor blood
Oh it is awesome progress! This discovery can be a significant step towards the development of universal donor blood. I have seen complications related to blood transfusion and its results. It has immense implications for blood transfusion safety and efficiency. I am curious to see its long term in-vivo experimental results.
shymaple··on Ask HN: How can I get better at explaining things?
Agree with you, active listening and observing people has improved my vocabulary and articulation.
shymaple··on Ask HN: How many of you have noticed a surge in static electricity lately?
Yes I do agree. But its not just me but recently I am listening it from lot of my friends and relatives as well that they are experienced many more incidents than past.
shymaple··on Stop Acting Like You're Famous
Awesome blog, I just loved the way wrote it. And I am totally agree with you. We don't need to be perfect or try to make perfect at first attempt, the more important is to enjoy the journey and honing the skills.
shymaple··on Yes, social media is a cause of the epidemic of teenage mental illness
I consider social media to be like a weapon; it is you who should decide what and how to do with it. However, nowadays, social intelligence is reaching a new low level among parents themselves. The person who should guide them in the right way is actually on the wrong path. I have seen my niece and nephew, and it's not their fault. When I visit them and interact with them; I never see them asking for a phone or laptop. However, my brother and sister-in-law are always busy, either with work, household chores, or on their phones, which creates a gap between child and parent. Consequently, I feel they find other ways to fill their time, eventually becoming addicted. Simply put, if we give them time, correct resources, and guidance, I don't think they will use it more than intended.
shymaple··on The design philosophy of Great Tables
Awesome, recently we started working on table functionality for one of our feature and your post is really helpful. Thanks!
