silverreads··on Ask HN: Those who left software development for a different technical field?
I just left cloud software development to be the jack-of-all-trades only computer person at a local shop. I love it. I spend all day helping people instead of fighting jira.
silverreads··on Democrats seek to outlaw unmarked police as they patrol D.C. protests
I'm inclined to believe the ones not shooting at the other ones myself.

The bail funds have tens of millions now.

I just looked at the first date I saw on the youtube page, ha, sorry.

Thanks for posting this. This is a great rebuttable to so so many foolish claims here.

He bent down, listened to the guy, and then moved his partner's knee.

Hey that's not fair, that's from 2015! What does he think now? Don't just judge a man forever by his past actions!
silverreads··on De-Escalation Keeps Protesters and Police Safer
Can't dismiss it now. Every major corporation and most congressional lawmakers are now pushing for reform.

Especially worth looking at Rep. Joyce Beatty who is a 70 year old black woman who got peppersprayed with the protesters. An elected lawmaker was attacked by the cops. Think about it.

We all said this tech would be used for no good, and now here we are.

They all just seem to re-print AP articles though?
silverreads··on AMD Ryzen 9 3900x price drop could take the wind out of Intel comet lake sales
Yeah, really. If they can pull something amazing out of an old CPU again, that'd really be something. Perhaps a 128 penryn with modern accelerators bolted on? :p
silverreads··on Gnome removed solid-color backgrounds based on what developer's friends use
This is why people call it open sores. You have no idea what feature you need will be removed tomorrow. Software perfection is not achieved with constant churn, so I'm not really sure what they are aiming for. Fresh code? Rat wheel. Good thing mate exists and is maintained.
silverreads··on Tell HN: Interviewed with Triplebyte? Your profile is about to become public
Really bad move. Shows the investors are putting the squeeze on them for new revenue, what they can do is now more important to them than what they should do. Well, good thing I used my 'junk mail' domain to sign up with them.
silverreads··on Apple Mac Pro Wheels Kit
I don't think that is deep enough for the mac pro to be stable front-to-back-wise, and it also only holds 60lb which is a little weak for a 40lb machine. Can't imagine it would last long if ever rolled around on carpet.

Still no brakes?
silverreads··on Ask HN: I work for AWS. How do I encourage change for Amazon warehouse workers?
The workers would be creating a non compete for their own positions, and enforcing it against amazon hiring the scabs. Their right to do so is questionable, just as normal non-competes are, but we'll see how legal judgement works out I suppose.

This is all very interesting stuff. Exciting time to be alive.

I mean, is that out of character though? I was going to vote for bernie but if trump extends federally funded healthcare to everyone and abolishes private health insurance (which, as far as I know, wouldn't negatively impact his financial supporters as much as bidens), hell yeah I'd vote for him. One issue, done deal.

Prison time?
silverreads··on Ask HN: I work for AWS. How do I encourage change for Amazon warehouse workers?
You're saying that creating and enforcing non-competes that not all parties are in a position to agree fairly upon is unethical?
silverreads··on Ask HN: I work for AWS. How do I encourage change for Amazon warehouse workers?
Buy them beer. If they are having trouble communicating among themselves then meeting at some outside neutral location to discuss collective action is the best thing they can do. Giving the bartender $500 for some drinks will sure help make their gatherings more popular.

Once this virus business is no longer affecting bars that is.

silverreads··on Shelter-in-Place Compliance Remains Low, UMD Research Finds
So of the people with smartphones, who also carry them with them everywhere, and allow location services, and somehow were added to the dataset of anonymized user location data, presumably by using crappy "free" services, compliance is low.

Well golly gee. People that don't care seem to not care. Meanwhile I haven't seen my friends and family in two months and have a locked down mobile device that doesn't even have the google play store on it, for privacy.

Biden will stick with the party and it's "obligations" no matter what, so you've got a really good point here. Trump could punch low and swing left, where biden has no footing. Maybe maybe, this could catalyze a general republican swing to the far left?
silverreads··on VC firms can be liable if startups wrongly claim stimulus funds
Cool, but the whistleblower claiming 30% seems like a strange incentive.
silverreads··on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS’ snap obsession has snapped me off of it
It's not that they do not understand what is good for them, they are simply rejecting your new features.
silverreads··on Wells Fargo temporarily suspending applications for home-equity lines of credit
They got cash while it was easy and certain. Accumulating it slowly would be as uncertain as their employment and expenses, and the option of borrowing later when they really need it may not be available. I can see how it might have been a logical choice for them.

News seeks to maximize views, so this must be in conflict with that somehow.
