Now we know why AA updated their benchmarking. Bet they weren’t #1 before the change…
simonjgreen··on Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index v5
This might be the first time I’ve favourited a post without upvoting it.

This is really sus. I’d love a more detailed explanation and “take” from AA on what problem they felt needed correcting and why things have shuffled the way they have. And how they can claim their index has relevance if positions can be switched around so easily.

It’s definitely not a good thing :D

The credits cost a fortune

simonjgreen··on WSL3 Performance is about 5-60% faster than WSL2 depending on the workload
It’s funny, I’ve never enforced a dress code at a company I’ve operated and yet nobody turned up to work naked. Weird.

We did this at a local makerspace on an old medical laser for tattoo removal (we wanted to use it for non medical purposes). It was pretty trivial, the credits mechanism was as low tech as you might expect :) it used a mifare classic card in a slot and simply deducted credits from a counter until 0.

A lot of hospital and lab equipment has worked like this for a long time. Often done with “credits” on a mag card, smart card, usb, or something downloaded. I definitely recall seeing floppy disks in use for it way back…

This is because, in some cases, the machine is actually rented or leased and the maintenance and supply costs are charged based on usage rather than as capex. Maintaining these machines is not cheap, especially calibration and testing.

Delightful way to write off an enormous cohort of people and huge variety of work.

I suggest that while many people might express that they have no interest at all in art, that doesn't mean that they don't passively recognise it and reap the benefits of high-quality design.

That’s beautiful. As is the mentioned Bindicator!

Just stumbled on this on YouTube and was compelled to share. This is the best (relatively) short form piece I’ve seen on avoiding AI slop while simultaneously embracing the gifts of AI
simonjgreen··on Surely you have ultra-wideband radios on your bins too?
It is indeed a typo! Thanks.

Interestingly I’ve used Zigbee for well over a decade, tried easily over a hundred different devices, built others homes, and I’d never encountered this battery size until this project!

Will fix the typo later

simonjgreen··on Surely you have ultra-wideband radios on your bins too?
Well that’s fascinating. The answer is a small amount was Claude written, like one of the image captions when I had it find the render and insert it, and I had it do a brief grammar and spelling check, but very little. Most of those chunks that tool has flagged were 100% handwritten.
simonjgreen··on Surely you have ultra-wideband radios on your bins too?
It’s in there, specifically noting that I am going to be watching that over the coming weeks.

The BLE tags I previously used lasted about 2 years of a CR2045. These are much larger CRs, and I have tuned it right down on the report timing when stationary, so I am anticipating more than 2 years.

simonjgreen··on Surely you have ultra-wideband radios on your bins too?
Kinda liking this idea :)

I’ve not played with vision models much. I did some experiments with OpenCV and Processing many years ago, but times have changed.

I think you just wrote me next weekend project ;)

simonjgreen··on Surely you have ultra-wideband radios on your bins too?
Thanks. I regret not taking more pictures during the initial testing indoors. I should document these things better, I only think about writing them up when it’s too late

I don’t think I’ve ever heard of that happening to someone!

I’d be interested to hear a bit about your reader.

I keep coming back to RSS, but that sadly also means I keep forgetting about it. How do you build the habit and routine?

Congrats Wisprflow, love to see this. Especially learning the users nuances and corrections, i think that may be novel in the dictation app space. Things like Handy have the ability to specify common typos but some method of automatic learning is new.

This is a pretty hot space right now. For me, it's all incredible for two things:

- I get my unabridged thoughts down on the page substantially quicker and cleaner using dictation. I believe dictation is the perfect first draft tool, and an amazing way to interact with AI too as you can dump tonnes of personal opinion in to every prompt without the overhead of keyboard interface.

- Accessibility! I know a couple of folks whos ability to use a computer has been tremendously elevated by the recent improvements in dictation. Due to mobility issues, they feel largely locked out of interacting online and tools like Handy and Wisprflow have been a game changer for them.

Very excited about all this, keep it coming!

I've been leveraging Birdnet-2.4 as well, but also ultrasonic-pass and activity-v1 to do broader detection with an ecological targeted microphone. This means I can capture not just bird sounds but also bats and some insects, and acoustic events such as jets and cars.

Applying heterodyne transformations to the bat recordings makes them audible which is fascinating, especially when you catch them in a feeding frenzy.

Similar intent with an indoor display, although nowhere near as beautiful as OPs eink display here. I'm more aiming for a real-time ticker, but this design is wonderful. I'm quite inspired by it!

I've been working on this in the background for a few months, if anyone is interested repo with screenshots is here: https://github.com/simonjgreen/OpenObservatory

I’m pretty sure this way they’ve hardcoded the NTPs is actually against the ToS for use of the NTP pool too.

The way a vendor embedding NTP is _meant_ to do so is documented here: https://www.ntppool.org/en/vendors.html

On another note, back when I ran a web hosting business we hosted a few NTP servers in the pool. It’s such a simple thing to give back, and worth anyone who can make a stable contribution doing so.

That’s a shame, because FreeSewing is a fascinating and pretty awesome project! If you know someone in to the textile crafts, you may find this changes their world if they don’t already know of it.
