Fascinated by the culture set forward by the original Unixers and Lispers.

Dennis Ritchie/Ken Thompson/Richard Stallman/Bill Joy/Guy L. Steel Jr.,... without whom we would have had a horrible time behind these magic boxes we call computers.

I was worried Lisp would die, but I like how lambda and mataprogramming are coming back in different flavours.

sindoc··on Maybe you’re not trying
Good points. Thanks for sharing. The main point I glean from this read is: don’t let productivity at work mask other aspects of your life.

There are irreducible dimensions of life where one shouldn’t accumulate debt, otherwise they come bite you when you’re vulnerable or they could make you vulnerable, which will end up affecting your productivity at work to say the least.

sindoc··on AI should not become another 'fire'
I'd be happy to clarify. I should probably make a reference to some of the statements made by Eric Schmidt. In that, it's difficult to predict the impact of AI. But if there's another point you were referring to, feel free to let me know so we can disucss.

sindoc··on Out of love for HN community, checkout the current vibe in Brussels [video]
Believe it or not, I educate myself a lot here and to thank you, I want to share a video you might enjoy, seeing perfection in action whether it be the type of nature we’re dealing with here and the types of human relationships we are able to form here in #Brussels

I try to document the vibe of my city for this fall using the hashtag #celebratethelifeofthedeadleaves on YouTube, Twitter, now X, Mastodon, and also even Instagram but the content is not automatically pushed. I’m an artist so I tend to look at the same thing from different perspectives. Anyway, enjoy your Sunday and don’t forget to go out to the nature.

sindoc··on Can Logseq become the Web Browser for knowledge artists? A Web/Unix immersion?
Let's dream together, sigh!

OMG, I was looking for exactly something like this. I’d like to create immersion between Logseq and CLI. This can very useful.
sindoc··on An AI generated, never-ending discussion between Werner Herzog and Slavoj ŽIžek
So weird, but it's very funny. Do you have plans to expand on this? Maybe collect sound from other thinkers and have them debate?

Your robot sounds very scary by the way. Perfect for the Halloween-ish season.

sindoc··on Ask HN: How can responsible engineers shape the future of Twitter?
Well, mainly because of the installed base. It's simply huge. I mean, it's like one of those things that sound easy but that it is actually much much harder to do to achieve. It's not easy to bring so many people on one platforms based on ideas that in Twitter are at least a minimum nuanced, using hashtags, some of the folksonomy stuff that became popular for a while in the early 2000s, which Elon is well aware of.
sindoc··on Show HN: A small, weird and unpractical programming language
Nice and clean. Keep up the good work. One thing I understood in programming languages is their ability to integrate with the rest of the ecosystem. A couple of things I like about your approach is how you allow your users to get a repl without even them having to install any perm files on their machine. That’s brilliant.
sindoc··on How can responsible engineers shape the future of Twitter?
These thoughts came to me as part of a small thread on the Logseq community [1] but a variety of follow-up thoughts came to me, which I thought would share with the one community I truly trust in this crazy world of propaganda of all sorts.

I thought I would share them with you, a group of individuals I feel I connect with, and trust, to see how we can adapt to this new world of Elon leading Twitter with its high potential and many risks as well.

A number of things change, now that Elon is running Twitter. First off, that's horrible news for many. I hope Twitter HR (who should be under a lot of pressure right now) are doing a good job, handling the logistics there.

In terms of Twitter product management teams though, I think they can get inspired by serious conversations in the community as to what features they will now put forward and to what degree, will they allow for communities to speak freely, which would be a way to actually also test a different layer of claims for Elon, in the lines, the bird is free. I mean, at some point, how free are we talking? Free as in Freedom or Free as in for as long as it serves my purposes.

Small side note: Mr. Musk also needs to understand to keep his power controlled for he might fall into traps only a few people have survived in history. Nelson Mandela, Cyrus the great, Darius, was it? Absolute power corrupts absolutely has been the rule, except for three so far. You might argue how we can know that to be three. Well, the answer is that when an individual has absolute power, it cannot go unseen. In most cases, it leads to wars and chaos, but it leads to good things when it is controlled like those three individuals built great civilisations, it so happens.

sindoc··on How Islam/Persia Saved Western Civilization
Okay, I added Persia there because efforts of Persians (Sasanian Empire, at the time) in Gundeshapur and the work of the likes of Ibn Sina and Al-Farabi in deciphering Aristotle's work have been instrumental in the chain of events that led to the saving of the partial Great Library of Alexandria and its further development during the Islamic Golden Age.
sindoc··on Why isn’t there a decent file format for tabular data?
I agree with the author. There’s merit in an open format to be developed with a simple spec as pretty much defined here. Of course more formalism should he attached to it i.e. BNF (am I too old?)

Anyway, one of the giants making billions out of data should maybe commission the publication of such a standard and the implementations in every programming language will follow, I’m sure.

The Unicode bit alone and an enforced mine type makes the case in my opinion and it should have streaming capabilities as well. Maybe chunking of content so that it can be used for caching and compression, ideally still human readable but not marked up like XML so you can’t see the end of it.

sindoc··on What Every Computer Science Major Should Know
The discussion of Gödel's theorems is not the only thing that makes GEB an interesting read.

What's more, GEB presents Aristotelianism vs. Platonism in the context of _computation_.

_That_ is a question CS majors should at least be aware of.

The question of whether computations can _ever_ be brought to have consciousness.

Then again, given my limited knowledge, I am far from being an authority on the topic and look forward to gaining more insight by hearing other opinions.

sindoc··on What Every Computer Science Major Should Know
The best match among existing categories, IMHO is ``Theory,'' which I assume refers to "Theory of Computation."

It is there that formal systems are brought up and CS majors should be aware of the hierarchy and limitations of formal systems, which are discussed in GEB.

If I were to place GEB under an arbitrary category, I would probably suggest ``Philosophy of Computation.''

sindoc··on What Every Computer Science Major Should Know
Keywords that I believe would be worth mentioning:

- Lambda Calculus - Reflective and Meta-programming - Meta-object Protocol - Closures - Continuations - Monads - Arrows - First-class Everything - Stack and Register-based Programming - XML - Linear Algebra - Fractal and Wavelet Image Compression - Regular Expressions - Clojure - LaTeX

NB. The concepts to which the above keywords refer, may or may not have been covered by the article. The keywords themselves are however absent.

Additional reading suggestions:

- Jon Bentley's Programming Pearls - Tom Mitchell's Machine Learning - Douglas Hofstadter's Gödel, Escher, Bach - Brian Kernighan and Rob Pike's Unix Programming Environment

sindoc··on Lisp-oriented Course on Programming Language Engineering
Now that I think about it, I see how the title may not have been suitable for an international audience. So, I changed it from ``Programming Language Engineering in Brussels in English'' to ``Lisp-oriented Course on Programming Language Engineering''.

Thank you for your feedback.

sindoc··on Lisp-oriented Course on Programming Language Engineering
The content of the course is of primary interest. Please see [1].

Non-English-speaking universities have a way of offering their courses in languages other than English.

How many courses do you think are now being offered with similar content in English?
