sirrocco··on Ask HN: Is NPM Having an Outage?
Apparently there's scheduled maintenance ongoing - but it wasn't supposed to break everything :) https://status.npmjs.org/
sirrocco··on Romania is developing its own culture of protests
Bribing was never on the table to be decriminalized, just negligence while serving in a public office.
sirrocco··on Facebook Bans Fake News Sites from Using Its Advertising Network
When you say no proof, what would you expect good enough proof? I expect the Russians would never admit to anything.
sirrocco··on Ask HN: When you feel stuck in life
He asked a valid question and passed no judgment. You seem to have a chip on your shoulder.
sirrocco··on Top developers can have a life outside coding
Honestly, when it comes to pilots I want one that has a burning desire to live.
sirrocco··on Booking.js – Availability and Scheduling API
It's open source if you use timekit.io (their backend essentially .... ). So not really.
sirrocco··on Show HN: A React.js yearly calendar component
No, you open up the Chrome Dev Tools, click the Timeline tab and then start recording. Click a few days in the calendar, stop the recording and then you'll see that after each click it takes 100ms until paint events are shown.
sirrocco··on Paris Shootings and Explosions Kill Over 100, Police Say
Ok, so there are some cases where it helped stop the attack. Going a step further, how many of those had AKs and maybe bullet proof vests? Should everyone have armor piercing bullets too?

How many of the attacks happened because it was easy to get guns in the first place?

A terrorist will always be able to procure guns. But what about an unhappy employee, an angry teenager ?

Arming people is no solution to terrorism.

sirrocco··on Paris Shootings and Explosions Kill Over 100, Police Say
Please give an example of a US terrorist attack on a theater/school/whatever when the citizens stopped the attack.
sirrocco··on Paris Shootings and Explosions Kill Over 100, Police Say
What was the cost of that "safety" ? There is no such thing as a free lunch it seems
sirrocco··on Ask HN: What can we do against terrorist attacks, like the one in Paris?
No, having guns won't help one bit. Just name one attack in the States that has been foiled by a citizen.

What will happen unfortunately is that the surveillance measures will increase exponentially, normal citizens will throw privacy out the window, terror attacks will still happen.

It's the world we live in.

sirrocco··on Ask HN: What can we do against terrorist attacks, like the one in Paris?
I call bullshit on that. Tell me one theater/school/whatever attack in the States that has been foiled by armed citizens.
sirrocco··on Why Torture Doesn't Work: The Neuroscience of Interrogation
"preying upon his prisoner's fears of the infamous Gestapo". Would you say then that torture (of other people) eventually played a role in the effectiveness of his technique ?
sirrocco··on Why Torture Doesn't Work: The Neuroscience of Interrogation
I was giving a couple of examples in reply to the "Why is this a topic of conversation?" question. It's not meant to be taken literally as a plan to save someone.

I'm just saying that it's worth having a conversation over.

PS: what's up with the downvotes in this thread ?

sirrocco··on Why Torture Doesn't Work: The Neuroscience of Interrogation
If your daughter and wife were kidnapped by 2 people and you catch one of them, would you torture him to save them? What if you learned that they are being raped every day? Would you torture him then ?

What if you knew they do this every two weeks to another family, would you do it then?

What if you caught someone that has a habit of planting bombs in schools, would you do it then ?

I don't know if torture works or it doesn't, but it's certainly a topic worth having a conversation over.

sirrocco··on New WikiLeaks Documents Reveal NSA Spied on French Companies
Oh, such a "holier than thou" attitude in that article - US watching over the naughty naughty Europeans so we can all have a better and safer world. Maybe he should get off that really really high horse just a bit.
sirrocco··on The compiler flag that time forgot
Actually .. it wouldn't : http://jsfiddle.net/kv2tzb5n/ (at least in chrome). Would you say this is a good moment to pass judgment on your programming abilities ?
sirrocco··on The compiler flag that time forgot
Really? Is that what you judge a programmer by? I might be annoyed if I see something like what you're talking about, but I'll just point it out and forget about it.

PS: I too am from the XHTML era :)

sirrocco··on Show HN: Generate personalized swim workouts
Why do I have to signup for this?
sirrocco··on Economic Inequality: It’s Far Worse Than You Think
That's exactly what he said - it's a matter of luxury. Retiring at 30 is a luxury.
sirrocco··on Poll: How many HN readers are believers?
> anyone is free to decide whether they follow the teachings of said religion or not

Everyone that has enough mental power to escape the mantra of " you are going to hell and burn for all eternity ". Many, many people truly believe that they are going to hell for the use of a condom so they are not as free as you think. They will be punished if they don't obey. That's how religion works, do what we say or you will get eternal punishment in a fiery pit. (but as George Carlin said .... god loves you)

sirrocco··on SpaceshipTwo crashes shortly after Mojave test flight
Oh bullshit ! Everything is at first expensive but eventually reaches down to the masses.
sirrocco··on Show HN: NomadList – The best cities to live and work remotely in
Definitely needs something like this. I mean Brasov and Timisoara have a cost of living of about $2000 - now that would mean you'll live at least an upper-middle-class lifestyle.

For one person you can probably get by with about $1000 easily.

sirrocco··on Ask HN: What did I do so wrong in this coding interview
Thanks for posting this, the whole thread was a learning experience and congrats for having the guts to "Ask HN".

I won't really comment on the code but I think that the company could have come back with something like: "Hey, can you make this much smaller? with only minimal use of frameworks?"

An explanation like "Falling far short of senior developer standards" sounds like an absolutely pointless comment and I feel someone had a bit of a childish reaction when seeing the code (their comment could fit them just as well).

sirrocco··on 4 Wordpress sites, 1 server – great performance on Digital Ocean with Nginx
Why not another blog post ?
sirrocco··on Show HN: Streamus - An open-source Chrome extension for managing YouTube music
Cool, keep up the good work.
sirrocco··on Show HN: Streamus - An open-source Chrome extension for managing YouTube music
Awesome extension - It would be nice if I could add a youtube mix. For example if I go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nlcIKh6sBtc I see a mix starting from this song. I'd like to play that mix. I don't know if there's a way to do that.

Great job.

sirrocco··on Open letter to the Yale Community from Dean
I fully agree with you. For example when I look at Amazon reviews I never look at 5 star or 1 star review. Always 2,3,4 - those come from people that actually had issues - some smaller some larger. Then I can decide: ok, I might encounter these problems but it's something I can live with.
sirrocco··on Somali piracy: More sophisticated than you thought
If you think like that about jokes, you'll have a hard time laughing at most of them.
sirrocco··on The doctors give me 30 days to live, each post is potentially my last
I don't think she's worried ... I got that as her making a joke.
