sjnu··on World record 477-mile-long lightning ‘megaflash’ confirmed over U.S.
"Three simultaneous lightning bolts strike ground"

Funny how the waves are always extra blurry when that happens.

sjnu··on Deno Is Webby
Do you have a reasonable example of why a library that would call location or history?

All I can think of is "using query string as getenv() for random debug hacks" or "using history as a hack to synchronously reach the structured clone algorithm", neither of which a library should do (but both easily emulatable).

sjnu··on EC2 Boot Time Benchmarking
Where did you get 3? The fastest numbers I could see in the post add up to 7-8s
sjnu··on Fortnite’s cash cow is Playstation, not iOS, court documents reveal
Imagine what Facebook's app would do if they didn't have to play within App Store rules.
sjnu··on 3D printing boats is becoming standard practice
Creality has one.
sjnu··on The Base58 Encoding Scheme
It's safe to leave behind one of each group (1 is still there).
sjnu··on New powerful malware obfuscation technique
So the big idea is "simulate user keypresses and mouse events", and it works if the user answers "yes" to the prompt "Program X wants to control other programs on this computer".

To be fair, Steam games request that permission, so users may be trained to accept it.

sjnu··on Autodesk Fusion 360 becomes almost useless for hobbyists
OnShape what now? I'm still on the free-but-everything-is-public plan. Is that going away?
sjnu··on Doom running on a pregnancy test
I thought so too, but the paper version apparently has a ridiculously high (user) error rate. When the failure mode is an extra human it might be a net win.
sjnu··on ‘AeroNabs’ Promise Powerful, Inhalable Protection Against Covid-19
This sounds like a great way to solve the “vaccines don’t give recurring income” problem.
sjnu··on Safely Reviving Shared Memory
Yes, ignoring the problem is easier.
sjnu··on macOS 11: copies of dynamic libraries are no longer present on the file system
As before? This just means there are no longer two full copies of every system library on disk.
sjnu··on macOS 11: copies of dynamic libraries are no longer present on the file system
Frees up a gig or two of disk space. Good.
sjnu··on Apple Music on Android requires its own payment details to avoid Google 30% cut
Have they been making a moral argument that they deserve a cut?
sjnu··on Metafont (1984)
Rendered version: https://tex.loria.fr/fontes/mf.pdf
sjnu··on Publishers File Suit Against Internet Archive
Yep. Producing the book is free.
sjnu··on The Trolley Problem Problem
I don't think you're allowed to sneak "when I kill it has societal benefit" into the "context".
sjnu··on Ask HN: Why No Smart Phone Esque IoT Device?
Buying a phone and replacing the software will be cheaper unless you're making truckloads of these? (There are a dozen brands of point-of-sale systems that are an iPod Touch or similar with a magnet attached to the headphone jack)
sjnu··on AES-based Synthetic IDs: deterministic AE for 64-bit integers
I’m curious what properties this has that aes(0||id) doesn’t.
sjnu··on Mathematicians Discover Prime Conspiracy (2016)
Because 100 to 200 is twice as much and 700 to 800 is not
sjnu··on CacheOut: Leaking Data on Intel CPUs via Cache Evictions
"CacheOut is effective even in the non HyperThreaded scenario, where the victim always runs sequentially to the attacker."
