Speech can do it all but eventually fatigue sets in if you do try to do it all with speech. Like RSI from too much typing but much faster. Best to use speech for the occasional long prose and steering, and something else for the yes/no/accept/decline options so the throat gets reasonable breaks.
skeledrew··on Tencent Hy4
There was always going to be an economic "crisis", just a matter of time. I see it more as a forced positive economic adjustment (bleak for those enamored with the current system).

Why would you want a full keyboard when speech is good enough for most of the heavy lifting?
skeledrew··on Vibe Coding Keypad
The quest for a good voice command tool for developers (and others) has been on for many years. Dragon and Talon are 2 that immediately come to mind, mainly for the "others".

We're getting close to Jetsons level.
skeledrew··on Vivaldi 8.3 for Desktop: make bad ads sad
This reminds me I have to see what's up with my install. Tried running earlier and got a message that it's secure store is busted, and have options to switch profile or continue and lose data, and all profiles are similarly broken. Luckily I don't keep much in it beyond sites like GMail and anything else not very Firefox friendly. Hoping this doesn't mean I lose access to my Google account as it's only logged in there.
skeledrew··on You'll need nerves of steel to work with AI agents
Yeah I've never encountered any of that with Opus. It's pretty good at following instructions, and is also careful re anything sensitive or dangerous. Like just a couple days ago a Telegram bot I have it working on made a reply to a message in a chat that it shouldn't have, and I told it to fix the issue and delete the message (I don't have delete permission in the chat). It did the fix and stopped, saying it won't do anything that touches my service account; I had to tell if specifically again to "do the delete" before it did via the bot. Just one of many cases, and the reprompting can sometimes be annoying but I'm also pretty appreciative that there's way less of a chance it'll do something that has me tearing my hair out.
skeledrew··on Synaptics Appears to Use Legal Threats to Block Open-Source DisplayLink Driver
> open sourcing our proprietary DisplayLink technology ... by educating our competitors and other third parties as to how we implement our market-leading proprietary technology

This makes no sense. If they're screaming about their patents then detailed specs of the tech would be publicly available via the patents office for whomever wants to have a look. They can't make an argument about losing competitive advantage because that's what valid patents are supposed to protect. And I think there is some kind of hobbyist-friendly clause in patent law, similar to fair use, that allows non-commercial 3rd party implementation of patents, so ultimately they have no valid argument against this, just deep pockets to bury hobbyists in legal fees for daring to clean-copy "their" tech.

And you either deal with it, or find an alternative. I'm pretty sure Google has no intention of pulling back, partly because they know the vast majority of users accept what they serve. And partly because they know many of the screamers will go quiet when it gets good enough; all they have to do is ignore them, and they have more than enough in their coffers to ignore anyone who isn't the US president.

How you want businesses to work and how they actually work are different things. By default, a business has no relations to society beyond beyond those facilitating financial transactions in such a way that said business makes a profit for its owner/stakeholders. Anything else is adopted strictly with the purpose of advancing that primary purpose, or is externally mandated via regulation, community pressure, etc. An entity that doesn't prioritize profit (given no external pressure) isn't a business.

I've seen this OK'd in college, though the number of allowed Wikipedia citations was capped.

It really doesn't make sense to use a service and expect that service to not ever change (or be replaced), particularly when you're not the owner of said service. I love how HN is but I wouldn't blink if it changed tomorrow for example. Heck, there have been recent changes: there's now a filter system for LLM-generated content, for one.

I remember a time when Wikipedia wasn't allowed as a source. Few years later, no problem.

Every tech starts out pretty bad, then improves over time.

I remember being taught library skills as a kid. That's what adults back in the day wanted to teach, because we needed to be able to find books to help with assignments and whatnot. And then the Internet and search engines happened and that class is no more. Things and times change.

It's not a goalpost move though, as there was never a guarantee to remain on well water.

But anyway I personally would find someone offering well water if I don't like the reservoir. And I've been using DuckDuckGo exclusively for search since they first appeared, so I've never had to deal with what Google's doing. I know the reservoir exists, but I've never drank from it.

The water supply got an update. Reservoir instead of wells. There may be a difference in taste but you'll get used to it. Or learn to dig a well.

The "magic box" is really just summarizing the top X results, which have been ranked by AI for many years. Everyone has been "blindly trusting" all that for a good while now.

> when search as a capability does not need AI to function

That means a far less capable search engine. Note that Google search has been AI-powered since before AI became a thing; it's now just more advanced, and particularly, explicitly publicized.

skeledrew··on Google will turn off search for schools that reject AI
Well their search engine is explicitly AI-driven; no AI, no search. Like you can't have juice that doesn't contain water.

This is great! Push more people towards DuckDuckGo, etc.
skeledrew··on Patrick Stewart taught us what good men do with power
It's quite possible he has a non-standard conception of what marriage means. Heck I can't think of any episodes pee even scenes in Star Trek that touches on marriage in any way. I'd say it's possible that he sees it as it is: an institution born out of social structure, which is objectively unnecessary to life. Doesn't change whether he's good or bad because it's a subjective measurement.
skeledrew··on Patrick Stewart taught us what good men do with power
It's interesting how I've been seeing posts about how Steward-as-Picard exemplified goodness. Sure he was a really great actor, but he was... an actor, tasked to help bring to life a universe envisioned by Gene Roddenberry. And there's like nothing about the latter.
skeledrew··on The AI cost of JavaScript frameworks
> At the very least, make your your websites degrades gracefully when JS is turned off.

I have noped out of so many sites that are - or should only be - serving simple content when I see the "please enable JavaScript" notice or site just plain breaks. It's so disappointing and irritating.

They won't. No reason to.

Nice. Push more people to use Chinese chips.

Nowadays I see sourceforge.net and the only thing that comes to mind is an ad-infested user-unfriendly site where there's just old and mostly unmaintained projects.
skeledrew··on A City Canceled Flock's Contract. Flock Ignored It. Police Chief Unplugged Them

skeledrew··on Researchers at cybersecurity startup Cathedral got inside Anthropic
The end result is the same but where the responsibility lies isn't. If Anthropic was themself hosting the solution then it would be theirs, but in this case the only thing they may be responsible for is passing data to a 3rd party that - potentially - doesn't have solid security practices.
skeledrew··on Researchers at cybersecurity startup Cathedral got inside Anthropic
Another misleading title. Anthropic wasn't hacked; a 3rd party solution that they use was.
