just another faang engineer lurking around

email = concat(x, y, "@gmail.com")

X — take the first letter of each: 1. Carroll's poem where a vorpal blade goes snicker-snack 2. Shelley's sonnet on a desert ruin 3. The Old Testament wisdom book by Qoheleth 4. Milton's pastoral elegy mourning a drowned Cambridge classmate

Y — concatenate these two strings: 1. symbol of the element named for Scandinavia 2. an operatic solo

skt5··on U of Michigan drops first-semester grades to ‘curb mental health crisis’
+1.

As an alum I've observed both:

* kids who partied hard first semester since grades didn't matter only to struggle second semester

* kids who benefited from this transition because they didn't go to Hotchkiss

I ended up in both buckets and I have mixed feelings about this since it helped and hurt me.

In the long run - it really didn't matter.

skt5··on Wealthy AI workers send San Francisco house prices soaring
Wealth could be invested (impacts those borrowing), used on consumables (impacts businesses), or hidden under the mattress or equivalent (reduces the supply of money so acts deflationary).

I would argue that those 3 are the main downstream effects of having wealth -- and they all impact people at large enough values.

skt5··on Amazon will stop accepting new customers for Mechanical Turk
This approach does work when there's a clear answer but what about tasks where the correct answer is multi-modal? Incentivizing agreement works only for tasks where there's clear answers.
skt5··on Amazon will stop accepting new customers for Mechanical Turk
This likely means those consuming the outputs of Mechanical Turk don't have a good way to measure the value (aka quality) of the outputs.

If they did - then they shouldn't care whether it's a human or a LLM. And if it's a LLM - then the cost will roughly correlate to the MIN(cost of the LLM, cost of a human) to do the task.

skt5··on U.S. health spending on pace to hit $6T
Any advice for a senior/staff level FAANG dev working in ML tooling but not in the health space interested in this kinda stuff?

What are good things to read, etc?

skt5··on U.S. health spending on pace to hit $6T
Fascinating. I feel like smart person + data (context such as health records, labs, insurance docs, etc.) + LLM -> some helpful tips for navigating the process. However, evaluating the tips on whether they are helpful or not would be hard for a smart person without the expertise.

Or put another way - how does a smart lay person evaluate the independent advocates? Do incentives align?

> If you're a software engineer who cares about health, and have been sitting on the sidelines till now, I think the next few years are a really interesting time to make a contribution.

do you have thoughts on what that looks like? what does the hiring landscape look like?

I used to use the docker + homebridge route but it became tedious to maintain. Instead, I connected it via the Google Home integration (requires an Insights plan) and then use my existing Starling Home hub to access it via HomeKit. This seems to be more reliable and less work than before.

skt5··on Tech CEOs Should Be Held Accountable, or Even Fired, Amid Layoffs
I wonder if for those who it was very obvious for "put their money where their mouths were" and bought a set of securities that would make them a ton of money on what was obvious when the obvious materializes in real life.

then, with that ton of money, they could buy enough shares to influence the board to implement their agenda.

in theory, this would quantify the definition of "obvious".

skt5··on Tech CEOs Should Be Held Accountable, or Even Fired, Amid Layoffs
> create a management committee, possibly with a rotating chairship, and in general give the employees more say over the direction of the company they work for".

this sounds very similar to a government where politicians are elected (un)fairly. likely, this just presents another set of trade-offs.

skt5··on The cost of being poor: Why it costs so much to be poor in America
Income is evidence of a person's ability to pay. Credit history is evidence of a person's willingness to pay. I would expect a positive correlation between the two but relying on that correlation seems risky.

I don't live in MN but there are also adult baseball leagues here but teams tend to consist of former minor league players, college, or high school baseball players who couldn't or didn't want to make a career out of playing baseball.

I've played adult slow pitch softball at the C, D, & E levels. A-C levels are essentially former (usually older) minor leaguers. Even D league is quite competitive if you haven't played organized baseball or softball at some point.

EDIT: Showing up, which is how I got to play in a C league, is usually enough but it can get personally demoralizing if you're in the wrong league for your level.

skt5··on Ask HN: How can you buy high quality healthcare?
This is an excellent recommendation since there are a few threads that specifically discuss this. I suspect your conclusion might end up being travel to the Mayo Clinic for a few weeks for diagnostic testing.

Some employers have their own health concierge in their benefits package that often goes mostly unused. I've heard positive feedback about the Stanford Health Navigation Service.

skt5··on Ask HN: How to make the home buying/selling process suck less?
I know this is slightly off-topic but I figure I'd share an approach to picking a solid buyer's or seller's agent that someone told me about that might interest folks reading this thread.

Define a geographical bounding box for the area of the home you wish to buy or the area of the home you are selling that your potential buyer's might be looking in. This could be a circle with a 0.5 mi radius in very dense cities or several miles for not-as-dense locations.

Then, search on Redfin or Zillow for all closed sales in the last N months for properties in your bounding box that meet your general criteria. Note you may have to adjust the value of N, what "general criteria" means, and your bounding box definition to get a good number of closed sales.

Finally, go through each closed sale and tally the number of sales & purchases each agent has. Anecdotally in dense areas, you should see the same few agents buying and selling homes. Interview the top X and pick an agent.

If your agent is going to get paid a lot - at least make sure they have a ton of local knowledge.

In economics, an externality [0] is a cost that is not paid for by the buyer or the seller but generally society bears the cost. For example, when buying a pollution machine - the cost to the environment may not be factored into the purchase price despite it being there.

Internalizing the externalities refers adding an additional cost to the purchase price to cover for the externality. In the example above for the pollution machine, this could be a carbon tax or a carbon offset.

skt5··on Does Georgism work? Is land a big deal?
The building value by the county assessor's office is considered a standard for depreciation schedules. While it might not be useful for selling the property or building it - it does have value for accounting purposes.
skt5··on Does Georgism work? Is land a big deal?
Generally speaking no. When there needs to be major maintenance, each condo unit owner pays N% of the cost where N% is defined as your ownership stake (also your voting weight) in the condo. N is roughly your unit's square footage / the sum of every unit's square footage.
