slau··on Valve "played capitalism so well they broke it" and now Steam can't be replaced
> with consumer friendly policies

Only up to a certain point. Valve still doesn’t recognise inheritance and people dying as a very real thing.

They expect families to just throw away dad’s login details because he died.

I understand that this is most likely the licensing legalese they have in place that forces it this way, but it really is time that someone in the EU took Valve to court to test this.

slau··on AI delivers 'zero financial payoff' to most companies, Apollo economist says
And yet, many companies today are spinning up full stack teams, asking them to be experts from user interviewing to database design, architecture, hosting, devops, API management, data product, and also keep an eye on GDPR compliance.

I see dozens of teams that are doing cloud to the wazoo when really they need to just be told “we’ll load your routes from main.py, build your assets in /static, you need a DB click the button to provision it”.

It boggles the mind that so many teams are reinventing the wheel a million times over to publish their APIs, register AWS accounts, setup CI, decide on ECS vs Lamda, etc.

slau··on OpenAI raises less than half of $30B target
I’m not touching any of that stock, most likely ever.

There’s so much money that has been poured into this, with absolutely no revenue to justify it. Trillions of investments generating billions of losses.

Now they’re looking for retail and retirement funds to pay off the debt.

This is not to say that no one will make a profit; I’m sure some people are _very_ happy.

slau··on OpenAI raises less than half of $30B target
We’ve seen a similar drop in spend. 3-5x less for entire teams comparing September and October.

It’s not clear whether people are being more careful, or if the price per effort is in free fall.

slau··on Tesla profits drop 43% in Q3
Not OP, but could it be they refer to FSD?

There’s also DOGE and all the related stock manipulation that happened, the tweet promising funding to take TSLA private which obviously made people buy the stock, the ru[n|i]ning of Twitter for political gain, the creation of teams in Tesla to convince owners not to come investigate battery/range issues under warranty, etc.

Probably not quite to Theranos levels, but I can see the pattern.

slau··on How the Elizabeth Holmes documentary “You Can See Everything” is deceiving
“I watched an unrelated YouTube video therefore I’m not convinced this movie is good” sure is a paradoxical level of judging a book by its cover.

I assume what you meant is that having heard about the person the movie focuses on, you have no interest in seeing more about her. Having felt entirely apathetic about Holmes since the early days of the Theranos scam, I can’t say I disagree with you.

Most European brands I've tried only lock the cars when the speed exceeds 20 km/h.

In addition, most brands I'm aware of will unlock the car when the airbags are deployed (Kia/Hyundai, Renault, Volkswagen, Mercedes, BMW). Because these cars still have door handles, they can be opened by a bystander after a crash.

The issue is not that the doors are locked. The issue is that unlocked doors without door handles are still useless.

slau··on Software engineers don't get to be Luddites about AI
While I don’t know anyone who at this point challenges the idea that LLLMs will have no lasting impact on the industry, what I struggle with is the handwaving and the zealotry.

Can an agentic harness be used somewhat successfully? Yes, undoubtably so. Do agents still come up with absolutely bonkers solutions on a regular basis? Also yes.

The problem, again and again, is the way that humans evaluate intelligence. When you’ve asserted that someone is reasonably smart, it will take you a very significant amount of proof of the contrary to change that opinion.

What we need, for LLMs to become reliable intellectual partners, is a way for them to convey lack of certainty. This is, by the way, also the same thing that many of the LLM-luddites want of the LLM-zealots.

I actually think this is brilliant. Let the scanner IP get access to the most unpatched Wordpress, maybe even generate some garbage ERP numbers.

Once the asset scanner detects the vulns, everyone will kick into high gear to patch this.

It’s practical to see battery level so I can optimise the electricity price at which I charge it.

Although it wasn’t worth the cost of the 3 year subscription so I now just estimate the charge status based on the charge’s power consumption.

If the car is at 10% battery, it may be worth charging at .15 or .3€/kWh. If it’s at 70% charge, I’ll wait until the price drops to .005€/kWh. The whole thing is automated in HA.

slau··on Hitachi launches CO2 heat pump water heaters with solar-friendly tariff controls
I believe he actually addresses that in his video. He mentions that 240V ones typically include resistive elements in case they’re needed IIRC.
slau··on Hitachi launches CO2 heat pump water heaters with solar-friendly tariff controls
Technology Connections has recently published an in-depth piece of the advantages and disadvantages of in-room heat-pump water heaters [1].

The tl;dw is that it is significantly slower than a resistive or gas-powered water heater, and lowers the temperature of the room by a few degrees, but nothing major. You have to over-provision them compared to your needs. And they are way bigger.

slau··on I turned my RSS feeds into an e-ink newspaper to stop reading on my phone
The only thing attracting me to KOReader for my PocketBook is OPDS. The few presentations I've seen show a UI so bloated (as in, the main view for reading pages crammed full of widgets on the bottom of the screen to display wifi signal, battery percentages, and progression counters) that it makes me wonder why some people use an ereader at all.

If my PocketBook had OPDS out of the box it would be the perfect device. What has your experience been? Why are you using KOReader?

Je peux aussi te répondre en Français, mais je ne vois pas du tout le rapport avec la discussion.

Have you actually seen the image I'm talking about? This is the one: https://firemapsspain.online/og-image-v3.jpg

It shows a straight line across all of France, which appears to be a 100km wide line of fire. Considering my family, in France, had to be evacuated, I have friends who lost absolutely everything, yes, I get annoyed when people use AI slop that doesn't care about accuracy.

Especially coming from a website that tries to improve information about wildfires! I never commented on the content of the app. I just said it's odd that the image in question shows France burning, but Portugal is shown empty of any wildfires.

slau··on Show HN: Firemaps Spain – Live wildfire map with wind flow for ES and PT
The AI-generated thumbnail that is embedded is social media posts is in particular poor taste. It appears to show most of France in a blaze of death.

All the while showing Portugal as not having a single fire at all.

I understand you might be focused on Spain, and that’s fine. But please understand that people are dying or losing everything, and being a tad sensitive to that could go a long way.

Going from EPUB to KEPUB requires conversion (I believe KEPUB has XHTML directly embedded into it, right?). It's Kobo's proprietary format to "support" fast scrolling with preview, reading time estimates, etc.

Yes, Kobo can potentially read EPUBs natively, however the support is intentionally gimped to try and push you towards KEPUB/their own store.

slau··on LG to ban residential proxies from smart TV apps
This is why I’m a bit conflicted about DoH and ODoH. Firefox and Chrome have defaulted to DoH for years if I’m not mistaken (although I’m in Europe so I believe my FF still uses regular DNS instead of DoH by default).

This also means that DoH effectively sends all your queries to CloudFlare on FF. Chrome is slightly smarter and tries to map your DNS provider to a DoH implementation if known.

slau··on Seattle Just Had an Earthquake
I think the universe is trying to tell you that whatever you wrote at that exact moment was fire. Or maybe the exact opposite, and the universe had to stop you instantly. That’s the annoying thing with the universe, one can’t ever really know with certainty what it meant, or even if it meant anything at all.
slau··on Ask HN: Are other people seeing a spike in IT problems with businesses?
I don’t think we used to be this way. I think the binary aspect of modern discourse was designed. A lot of arguments are reduced to us v them. It is as if holding two simultaneous opinions is now a bag thing.

Politicians used to rely on facts. On evidence. Colbert, like him or not, hit the nail on the head over a decade ago: “We live in a post-truth world.”

Maybe it’s a side effect of modern media platforms. You either like or dislike. If you don’t do either… do you even exist?

The tribalism has been pushed to an incredible level. You can’t agree with part of someone’s discourse. You either fully agree or fully disagree with them.

3 90-day ACME certs for free. 180€/year for unlimited 90-day certs and 5 yearly ones.

That’s a pretty steep increase. I would almost be more interested in a monthly fee per cert.

HID was originally American and Scottish, but became fully American in 1994.

HID was acquired by Assa Abloy in 2000. No idea whether that means we now consider it Swedish.

ZeroSSL used to be Austrian until their acquisition in 2024.

I used to work for a company that got acquired by HID. It looks like HID has retained their original offices in some form.

What a brilliant piece of writing. I remember almost every single step—safe for actually getting angry emails. Maybe I ended up being the one writing them.

What a glorious time period.

Interestingly, it would’ve been impossible to share this writing with as many people as the author did by publishing it on mastodon and then it ended up on HN in 1998. The network effects are real.

slau··on Microsoft Edge stores all passwords in memory in clear text, even when unused
OK, fair, I never left my keepass file exposed like that when I used keepass.

If I remember correctly, 1Password still requires a "vault key" in addition to your username and password, and it was definitely too long and not used often enough for me to remember.

slau··on Microsoft Edge stores all passwords in memory in clear text, even when unused
> Remove all passkeys from your phone and laptop

I don't have any passkeys on my phone or laptop. They're all on the Yubikeys.

I don't really see a difference with (some) password managers, though. If you use one of the keepasses, and you lose access to the file, you're in the same situation right?

And yeah, you're right, there is a risk of inconvenience. I'm not debating that. I just choose to organise my life in such a way that it is just an inconvenience.
