slipwalker··on Ask HN: What are your career plans in the age of AI?

slipwalker··on Ask HN: Friends, what is your Plan B?
save and invest most of my paychecks; and when robots replace most of our IT jobs, move to some of the lowest cost per acre for land counties, to raise chickens and goats.
slipwalker··on A farewell to Arc browser
would be most gracious from them to open-source it. It would completely removes the bad aftertaste from those who trusted the product and the company.
slipwalker··on Ask HN: What Is Your Personal Backup Methods
- first copy on external 2Tb drive, via Time Machine ( macosx )

- second copy on 12Tb Raid5 NAS, via rsync

- code and settings also on cloud ( gitlab )

- documents also on cloud ( GDrive )

- media burned on DVD.

slipwalker··on Ask HN: What do you run on a $5 VPS that's worth keeping online 24/7?
openresty with several half-done micro-saas, written in golang with sqlite3 storage.

( my post-factum inspiration: https://stevehanov.ca/blog/how-i-run-multiple-10k-mrr-compan... )

slipwalker··on Ask HN: How to deal with AI "true believer" leadership at work
just surrender... agree with them and collect your paychecks. Later you will collect more paychecks fixing the slop.
slipwalker··on What do you do now as a software engineer?
actual engineering, i guess... before ai-assisted coding, it was like the civil engineer laying the bricks himself.
slipwalker··on Ask HN: Which model do you use for work?
mostly GLM-5-turbo for coding,

and gemini-3.6-flash for brainstorming problems

( why ? token cost and availability at work )

slipwalker··on Ask HN: Which harness do you use with Qwen3.8 27B? And why?
pi.dev with

"packages": [ "npm:context-mode", "npm:pi-subagents", "npm:pi-web-access", "npm:pi-bar", "npm:pi-opencode-bridge", "npm:@ssweens/pi-leash", "npm:pi-caveman", "npm:@ff-labs/pi-fff", "npm:pi-ui-hephaestus", "npm:@alexanderfortin/pi-zai-usage", "npm:pi-cache-optimizer", "npm:@hypabolic/pi-hypa" ]

slipwalker··on Ask HN: Do you love your job?
i "love" my vices and luxuries that my paycheck provides...

( and i hate the little time my job allows me to enjoy those )

slipwalker··on Ask HN: How do you interview devs in a post-AI world?

slipwalker··on Neovim have a ~$800k Bitcoin donation sitting untouched since 2023
but what sort of people keep their bitcoins on the exchange ? the whole point is about not being seizable by dirty governments...
slipwalker··on Ask HN: What is the most career altering course or book you have gone through?
Programming Perl, 1st Ed. from Larry Wall. The three great virtues of a programmer were enlightening for a fresh-outta-college beginner.
slipwalker··on Ask HN: What default model do you use and why?
same here. GLM-5.3-flash is my current daily runner for coding and reviews, and Deepseek-v4 when a second opinion seems beneficial.
slipwalker··on Ask HN: How do you survive a job you hate which is slowly making you sick?
you should take this job as what every job is: means to a comfortable living. Take the paychecks, if the backlog of weeks take months and the c-levels are used to it, it only means more paychecks for you.... save/invest as much as you can, and spend the rest with whatever gives you pleasure, this alone should prevent your health deteriorating.... maybe even "stop worrying and love the bomb".
slipwalker··on I'm a CTO. We took PE money 6 months ago. AMA
How did the AI/agentic-engineering/LLMs changed your engineering and operations ( maybe product management ) teams and activities over these last 2 years ? How did it affected your cost structure ?
slipwalker··on Ask HN: OpenBSD or FreeBSD?
for what purpose ? i would prefer FreeBSD for a laptop/desktop/workstation, but openbsd for a lean/mean server...
slipwalker··on Ask HN: What is your covered call options trading strategy?
calendar spread.
slipwalker··on Ask HN: Which model do you use with Pi coding agent?
GLM 5.x coding plan from z.ai, and opencode go plan.
slipwalker··on Fable 5 dropped from subscriptions before the promised July 19 date
looks a lot like a rag pull...
slipwalker··on Ask HN: How long do you use your personal laptop before replacing it?
0. SWE turned manager against my better judgment

1. MacBookPro M4 base model.

2. roughly 10 years ( my last one was a MCP retina 2015, and before that linux notebooks lasting about the same time ).

slipwalker··on Nginx Vulnerabilities
for a long time i have replaced my nginx instances with openresty ( the open source version with Lua scripting ) and the CVEs seem to be less critical and solved faster:

https://app.opencve.io/cve/?q=product%3Aopenresty+OR+vendor%...

https://app.opencve.io/cve/?q=product%3Anginx

slipwalker··on Ask HN: How do you keep documentation up to date with AI generated code?
replace documentation for an agent/chatbot accessing a RAG with the collection of requirements/design docs plus the code repository. I have been doing a POC at my day job and it works surprisingly well even with SLMs ( Gemma3 4B, i smy current favourite )
slipwalker··on Ask HN: What GUI/desktop app do you use to keep track of different AI sessions?
wezterm running herdr.dev with several pi.dev sessions.
slipwalker··on Ask HN: Should I buy mac studio M4 max or macbook M5 pro?
i am assuming he is suggesting a 3 year depreciation cycle for the equipment, quite common on enterprises.
slipwalker··on Ask HN: Homeless, Former Software Developer, What Now?
"former software developer" does not say much... which field of expertise, which tech stack are you comfortable with ? In current AI trends coding means very little compared to system design, solution architecture and (argh!) prompt/context engineering... any proven experience there ? a public portfolio ? and i am sorry, but it does not seem feasible you can afford pets currently...
slipwalker··on Ask HN: Where is our profession (programmer) going?
towards system design and solution architecture.
slipwalker··on Ask HN: New clean macOS install. Must-have apps? Best browser?
for my needs, raycast suffices, and it is one less app to install.
slipwalker··on Ask HN: New clean macOS install. Must-have apps? Best browser?
homebrew ( indispensable ! all the other apps below are installed/managed via homebrew ):

- raycast ( keyboard shortcuts for clipboard manager, basic window management, pomodoro tracking and app launch )

- stats

- ice ( menubar manager )

- theBoringNotch ( to have some use for the annoying notch )

- mole ( storage cleaner )

- wezterm ( inside which i run zsh, tmux, neovim, zoxide, eza, batcat, ripgrep, fzf, fdfind, yazi, btop, lazygit, lazydocker... )

- textmate

- iina

- zen browser ( with uBlock origin and betterfox settings )

slipwalker··on Ask HN: Whats the best and small open source model?
i have toyed around Tiny Llama 1.1B ( https://github.com/jzhang38/TinyLlama ) for the "conversational brain" of NPCs in a game i was dabbling.... it was fun.
