slobiwan··on Germans decry influence of English as 'idiot's apostrophe' gets approval
Same in Iowa. I grew up talking about going to Penny's (as in JC Penny) or Sernett's or Gibson's (local department stores).
slobiwan··on Fiber optic drone control beats any RF jammer
Using GPS doesn't mean you can't be jammed. GPS is quite low power and easy to jam, and feasible to spoof[1].

slobiwan··on Show HN: Click counter using iPhone volume buttons
I'd be interested in a frequency counter view, with a running average per minute or per second. So I can record that I see 10 Teslas per minute driving to work in the morning, but only 3 Teslas per minute on the way home at night (for example).
slobiwan··on Show HN: Click counter using iPhone volume buttons
doesn't seem to work well for me. volume up and down sometimes register 1 count, sometimes 2, sometimes none. Deleted shortly after install, worried about what it's actually doing rather than counting.
slobiwan··on What We're Working on in Firefox
Is anybody currently using Sidebery who could comment on how the Firefox "Tab grouping, Vertical tabs, and sidebar" compare?
slobiwan··on The quest for a simple smartwatch
I have a ZeTime that I used on and off for a couple of years. Now it's just sitting on a shelf. It was fine for my purposes at the time, but ended up inheriting an Apple Watch that's a lot more polished. I don't see ever going back to the ZeTime.

If you are interested, I'll let you have it for the cost of postage.

slobiwan··on Scan iPhone backups for traces of compromise by “Operation Triangulation”
Oh, got it. I thought the tool wanted to go back and walk through a progression of previous backups. I can certainly do a new backup
slobiwan··on Scan iPhone backups for traces of compromise by “Operation Triangulation”
Slightly off-topic, but how do I download an iCloud backup so I can scan it with this tool? The googles imply that I can only recover my device from the cloud, not retrieve old backups for other purposes.
slobiwan··on Ask HN: 2-Column Hacker News greasemonkey script stopped working?
Looks like some new formatting removed the "itemList" class. I'm no javascript/DOM hacker. Can somebody make this 2 column user script work with the new format?
slobiwan··on Two-piece con rods claimed to boost low-end engine torque by 30%
Is there where somebody has to add "in lab mice" to the title?
slobiwan··on 90s Cursor Effects
The clock one is really cool, and I don't recall ever seeing it implemented on a website. Who used this?
slobiwan··on What did Earth look like X million years ago?
You mean besides Planet of the Apes?
slobiwan··on When Greenswashing Backfires – Thank You North Face
Pretty sure the comment was about the video narrator pronouncing it "ek setera", not "et setera" or even "et ketera" (I counted 3 instances). And I agree, just like people who say "supposably[1]", it exposes somebody who isn't well read.

slobiwan··on Xsnow
Xantfarm was a particular favorite of mine. Made coming into work on a Monday morning kind of fun, to see what the ants had been up to

slobiwan··on Why thieves love to steal catalytic converters
The last time I took my car in for a (California) smog check, they definitely stuck a sensor up the tailpipe. Also run the engine for fixed duration at several set speeds to get a variety of readings, on a dynomometer (a treadmill, basically) to simulate actual driving speeds.
slobiwan··on An unexpected victory: container stacking at the port of Los Angeles
That's the popular consensus here in LA, it's cheaper to discard the containers than to ship them back empty (and nobody at the receiving end wants enough of what we have to make it worth sending them back full). However I drive through the port area frequently and always see containers stacked well above the 2-high limit. I suppose that means they are not empty containers? There definitely has to be some alternate use for these empty containers. People have tried to build houses with them, but I think one issue preventing widescale implementation of that use is that quite a few of them were originally holding some kind of material that would be hostile to human inhabitants. And living in a metal box in the Southern California summer would not be feasible without expensive air conditioning retrofits.
slobiwan··on California tried to save the nation from tax filing, then Intuit stepped in
Can you provide some breadcrumbs to find opt-in ?
slobiwan··on Ask HN: Are you also getting extremely obvious spam bypassing Gmail's filters?
I'm getting exactly those kind. Russian (I assume) name for the sender, gmail.com email address (From: "Арслан Минаев" <yerusaqe@gmail.com>), .htm attachment with spammy filename (Your Business 01836.htm). Random numbers for the content. Headers indicate DKIM and SPF passed, and it looks for all intents and purposes like a legit gmail email. But it's spam.

slobiwan··on Amazon US customers given one week to opt out of mass wireless sharing
That must be the case. My Alexa app (iPhone) is version 2.2.416595.0, updated on May 20.
slobiwan··on Amazon US customers given one week to opt out of mass wireless sharing
Check the Alexa app, not the Amazon app. Shows up in mine
slobiwan··on Hyundai Nexo sets new world record 887.5 km travelled on single tank of hydrogen
> has since taken the Californian market by storm, with approximately 400-500 units running in the sunshine state right now.

Um, "taken by storm" is a bit of an overstatement. 500 out of 14 million? https://www.statista.com/statistics/196010/total-number-of-r...

slobiwan··on 3D Scanning Systems That Can Render a Complete, Editable 3D Model in Minutes
This is a pointer to a review from 2015 for a product that's no longer commercially available. Seems like perhaps the technology wasn't as mature or capable as the review seems to indicate, if it didn't make it.
slobiwan··on Escaping strings in Bash using !:q
This is very useful for saving off a one-liner .sh file once you've finally gotten the one that you want to work. I will have to remember this!

echo !:q > doagain.sh

slobiwan··on Kitty – A fast, featureful, GPU based terminal emulator
I suppose there are only a few words that end in tty, but I was a little surprised this wasn't a GPU enhancement to the already nice Kitty [http://www.9bis.net/kitty] which is based on Putty [https://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/], both Windows programs.
slobiwan··on Designing an Overkill workbench for home office
I've got that setup right now, but I find that the door on top of two-drawer HON file cabinets is just a bit (about 1.5 inches) too high for a normal office chair, and isn't doing my wrists any favors either. What I really need is a very thin desktop that's just as solid.
slobiwan··on Bare metal Smalltalk-80 port to the Raspberry Pi
I love the idea of bare-metal ports to the Pi. I saw snakeware posted here not too long ago. Are there other examples? ColorForth would be interesting as well
slobiwan··on Teleforking a Process onto a Different Computer
I worked at Locus back in the 90s, when this technology was part of the AIX 1.2/1.3 family. The basic architecture allowed for heterogeneous clusters (i386 and i370 -- PC's and IBM Mainframes all running on the same global filesystem.) Pretty sure you couldn't migrate processes to a machine with a different architecture though. It was awesome to be able to "kill -MIGRATE" a long-running make job to somebody else's idle workstation, or use one of the built-in shell primitives to launch a new job on the fastest machine in the cluster "fast make -j 10 gcc".

edit: spelling
