smallblacksun··on First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win
I agree that Gandhi didn't mean that it as proof, but many, many people on the internet use it to mean precisely that.
smallblacksun··on Linus Torvalds Answers Your Questions
>It was a man who thought big, who had "one overriding idea": Tesla.

>It's not about "one overriding idea",

You're right, the author isn't a "reverse" or "backwards" racist. He is just racist, period.
smallblacksun··on Warp Drive May Be More Feasible Than Thought, Scientists Say
The time dilation effects don't become large enough to have significant affects on aging until speeds significantly higher than .1C. For example, to age at 1/2 normal rate, you would need to be going ~0.86C. This site has a calculator to play with: http://www.1728.org/reltivty.htm?b0=0.1
smallblacksun··on Ask President Barack Obama anything on Reddit (seriously)
I'm pretty sure the vast majority of Americans on reddit were already going to vote for him, and that it will have virtually no impact on anyone who doesn't use reddit.
smallblacksun··on How Paperbacks Transformed the Way Americans Read
The publishers answer to the threat of Amazon.com was (allegedly) illegal price fixing. http://www.nytimes.com/2012/05/31/business/media/penguin-and...
smallblacksun··on Mozilla removes -moz-opacity; man threatens to sue for $18,000
He did said he would take them to court if they didn't pay the invoice. It was clearly an idle threat, though.

"The Picture Show" is not a news program either.
smallblacksun··on Income inequality, as seen from space
It is similar, at least. Here is another one showing South Korea that is taken using a regular camera from the ISS that shows similar light patterns (https://plus.google.com/117789022459699674254/posts). It's hard to see North Korea because of the angle and the clouds.
smallblacksun··on Income inequality, as seen from space
I think that this image (http://i.i.com.com/cnwk.1d/i/tim/2011/12/19/northkoreamap_62...) of Korea is the most striking representation of image equality. It is visible from space with the naked eye.
smallblacksun··on One Bad “Policy Change” Email Can Kill Company Culture
If he sent that email, he would be admitting to firing someone for reporting labor law violations, which is illegal.
smallblacksun··on SpaceX wins $440M contract with NASA to develop Space Shuttle successor
>Not counting their initial failures, SpaceX has had a 100% success rate.

And other than the ones that exploded, NASA never lost a shuttle.

smallblacksun··on All eight women disqualified for throwing badminton matches
There can still be issues even with that. I watched an international youth tournament (CONCACAF u20 championships, I think) where the US and Canada? could each guarantee advancement with a tie, but could be eliminated if they lost. The first half had both teams trying a bit, but not being willing to push enough men forward to have a real chance. The second half was a joke, with the US midfield and defense kicking the ball around their own half for 20+ minutes at the end of the game, while the opponent stayed in their own half.
smallblacksun··on Apollo Moon flags still standing, images show
We just need to get the NRO to let us borrow one of their satellites :)
smallblacksun··on Hot Dogs & Caviar
Before reading the postscript I thought it was an interesting, if not revolutionary, critique of ad services. Then I read the last line and realized the whole "article" was yet another ad for app.net. I felt like I had been tricked into reading a sales pitch, which irritates me and makes me less likely to join your project.
smallblacksun··on Firefox Beta 15 supports the new Opus audio format
There is also the question of whether the statements from Skype about patents are still true given their purchase by Microsoft.
smallblacksun··on How Amazon’s ambitious new push for same-day delivery will destroy local retail
No one actually pays use taxes.
smallblacksun··on Google Files Bill of Costs for Oracle to Pay - $4,030,669
>The high rates that top lawyers get paid are simply market rates

Market rates propped up by having the ability to restrict entry into the market controlled by other lawyers.

smallblacksun··on Windows 8 Pro Upgrade to cost $39.99
The court oversight of Microsoft stemming from the antitrust lawsuit ended in May 2011. I don't think it is a coincidence that Microsoft's initial publicity about the new Metro stuff cam in June 2011.
smallblacksun··on America is wooing foreign tourists for the first time
The US has a large problem with people entering on limited term visitor or student visas and then never leaving. While most of those people are harmless, others aren't (including a number of the 9/11 hijackers). By taking fingerprints of all foreigners, those prints can be entered into law enforcement databases if they overstay their visas. I don't really understand why people would have a problem with it. What bad things would having your fingerprints make it possible for a government to do that having the information from your passport and visa forms wouldn't?

smallblacksun··on Pen Type-A: a cautionary tale of manufacturing in China
China is also notorious for "creative interpretations" of contracts that just happen to favor the Chinese company.
smallblacksun··on Automating production at China factory reduces 80% of workforce
Africa won't become a major manufacturing hub until companies can be relatively confident that violence and political turmoil won't destroy their investments.
smallblacksun··on India firm shakes up cancer drug market with price cuts
Not 0, but vastly less than the cost of discovering and getting approval for a new drug. The vast majority of medical compounds are not particularly difficult to synthesize, meaning that the value of the process patent is relatively small. Once you release the drug, you will only have a very brief period before a competitor is able to come to market. In particular, they will not need to undergo clinical trials, which are very long (multiple years) and expensive (often hundreds of millions of dollars).
smallblacksun··on Can We Reverse The Stanford Prison Experiment?

smallblacksun··on Crypto breakthrough shows Flame was designed by world-class scientists
The NSA says that about 1/3 of their budget is put towards protecting US government systems and data (though there is no way to verify that). It is extremely difficult for them to even attempt to protect non-governmental systems. The NSA was involved in SELinux, and designed the SHA family of hash functions. This, along with their certification of various cryptographic standards as acceptable for government use, seems to me to be about all they could do defensively without requiring them to have access to private systems and data.
